Trump Goes Even Lower

President Donald Trump.

NBC News:

Republicans are calling on President Donald Trump to apologize for a macabre quip about the late Democratic Rep. John Dingell at his rally in Michigan on Wednesday night, suggesting that Dingell was “looking up” from hell.

Sen. Lindsey Graham, a top Trump ally, and two House Republicans from Michigan called for the never-penitent president to say he’s sorry. “If he said that I think he should apologize,” Graham told reporters Thursday morning. He said he hadn’t seen the remarks, but “that would be a bad thing to say.” “John Dingell is a fine, fine man,” Graham said.

Dingell’s widow, Rep. Debbie Dingell, D-Mich., responded on Twitter, saying: “I’m preparing for the first holiday season without the man I love. You brought me down in a way you can never imagine.”

When President Donald Trump said the words “maybe he’s looking up” instead of looking down in reference to the late Rep. John Dingell’s final spiritual destination, there was a momentary pause followed by a mix of cheering and what seemed to be at least some amount of astonished gasping–and as always, in our continuing presumption of some measure of decency in even the most polarized Americans, we’d like to believe that the shocked reaction from conscientious attendees was authentic and not momentary.

As for outrage, yes. Of course it is. Perhaps even Cory Gardner will work up the nerve to say so.

  1. Trump is an asshole. His followers love him because 1) they are assholes, and/or 2) he is their asshole, shitting on those they don't like.

He is also an amoral liar. Other than insulting a dead man, the point of the story is that he did this huge favor for Dingell's wife, and now she is stabbing him in the back by voting for impeachment. He says, "I don't need anything for anything," but that is a lie. He expects her loyalty, like a mafia don, in exchange for the favor. His own story paints him as the transactional, petty man that he is, and yet his supporters eat it up.

    1. I don't care to investigate the level of presidential involvement required for a funeral like Dingell's, but I doubt it was much more than the stroke of a pen. Needy Amin is acting like he hung the garlands and personally did all the catering.

  2. …and those who enable him, like Senator Cory Gardner, clearly believe, and through their loyalty support, that it is good for the POTUS to be an asshole and a bully to widows, to 16 year olds, to refugees.

  3. If I had a dollar for every time I've said "he can't get worse," I would be a very wealthy Swiss psychoanalyst. He reminds me of the Red Robin or Olive Garden commercials promising "bottomless" fries or breadsticks, but in this case his lack of bottom refers to the lower rungs of decency.

  4. Wherever John Dingell is, you can be sure he would have to stoop over and look way, way, way down to see, if he wanted to catch a glimpse of where dirtbag Ttump lives . . .
