What you can do to fight back through the New Year

This is our final weekly action alert for 2019. Let’s take a moment to reflect on this amazing year.

After an historic landslide victory for progressives in Colorado in 2018, in January the new majority and governor set to work solving problems that had been piling up for over four years in a divided legislature. The new progressive majority had a powerful mandate from voters to take action on health care, education, civil rights, and upholding the dignity of the working people who make everything we value in our state happen day after day.

The progressive majority’s results in the 2019 session of the Colorado legislature speak for themselves. We’re on the way to making a public option for health coverage and paid family leave a reality next year. The legislature gave local communities the power to set a living wage. Big strides on common-sense reform of our criminal justice system and renter’s rights. Big investments in affordable housing, and new resources to ensure Coloradans have access to mental health treatment. And we passed another crucial piece of legislation to protect the public from gun violence.

After an historic legislative session keeping campaign promises, the far right retaliated against the progressive majority, threatening recalls against numerous elected lawmakers (full disclosure: including my brilliant, beautiful and extremely talented wife Sen. Brittany Pettersen) and Gov. Polis. But unlike in previous years, the voters of Colorado said no to every attempt. Today, the chairman of the Republican Party Rep. Ken Buck, who promised to “teach Democrats how to spell R-E-C-A-L-L” refuses to take responsibility for wasting all of 2019 on a fool’s errand, while progressives in Colorado are united and organized for the coming election.

None of this success would have been possible without you. By turning out to events that set the agenda and hold our leaders accountable, making phone calls, writing letters, knocking on doors to help candidates targeted by the far right, you helped ensure that the victories at the polls in 2018 translated into progressive policy wins at the state capitol in 2019. In 2020, everything we’ve worked toward since the national tragedy of the 2016 election to take back our state and nation comes to fruition. Thanks for everything you do and will do to help.

Here are a few more ways to make a difference as 2019 comes to a close:
