Democrat Angie Paccione’s campaign for congress in CD-4 released polling numbers today that they say shows incumbent Republican Marilyn Musgrave to be the most vulnerable incumbent in the U.S. The poll shows Musgrave leading Paccione by a slim 38-37 margin.

A recent in-depth survey of 600 likely voters in Colorado?s Fourth Congressional District shows that State Rep. Angie Paccione is gaining momentum and is ?locked in a statistical dead heat? with incumbent Rep. Marilyn Musgrave.
Polling conducted from May 31 to June 6 by Virginia-based Strategic Services, LLC, with a plus or minus 4 percent margin of error, shows that a majority of voters want ?someone new? in the Fourth District seat. Only one-third would vote to re-elect Musgrave if the election were held today, while 59 percent give her negative job performance reviews.
The poll shows significant losses for Musgrave since a similar one conducted last July, before Paccione officially announced her campaign.
Last year, former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay named Musgrave one of the ?ten most vulnerable Republicans? in Congress, calling on special interests to back Musgrave in the 2006 race. Corruption in Congress, rising gas prices, and frustration with the war in Iraq continue to dog Musgrave and the Republican leadership, adding up to ?some of the worst numbers we have ever seen for a two-term incumbent,? according to Strategic Services President and CEO Andrew Myers.
Musgrave?s approval ratings suggest that Musgrave is in ?major trouble? in the run-up to November. Myers says ?nothing but good news dominates for Democrat Angie Paccione and her campaign.?
Some key findings from the poll are below.
If the election were held today:
???? 37% would vote for Musgrave
???? 36% would vote for Paccione?
On Musgrave?s re-election:
???? 51% of voters ?believe it?s time for someone new?
?
On job performance:
???? 59% of voters rate Musgrave?s performance as fair to poor
?
On the direction the country is headed:
???? 58% of voters believe the nation is ?on the wrong track?
???? 66% of undecided voters believe we?re ?on the wrong track??
?
Strategic Services, LLC, of Springfield, Virginia, was founded in 2001 and has polled in political contests in 37 states, including dozens of races in Colorado. Andrew Myers has more than a decade of polling experience in more than 1,000 races nationwide. He formerly was Senior Analyst at Greenberg Quinlan Research and frequently lectures at George Washington University on qualitative and quantitative research methods.?

A poll taken over seven (7) days? you’ve got to be kidding me… That isn’t even close to being a scientific, statistical sample.
It looks to me like Angie’s people kept polling until they got the results they were looking for, not to mention they didn’t release the full push “poll’s” questions.
This poll is completely slanted and total garbage. It smells as bad as the dog poop that Angie’s followers have taken to throwing.
A poll done over seven days?
Never heard of that before, unless we’re recounting the numbers until we get a response we like… and all before DogPoopGate too!
I consider myself to be a moderate, but this was a slant poll. I got an automated call to my home, saying it was coming from the Musgrave campaign then it went on to ask me if I still liked Musgrave if I knew that she took money from such and such or she did such and such. This poll was purely designed for a press release, it is far from factual.
What did the Perlmutter staff start working for Musgrave now? Can anyone believe a poll anymore? This is getting ridiculous.
What a joke!
If I didn’t like Musgrave so much, I’d say that based on the merit of the actual race, there’s never going to be anything newsworthy in CD-4.
Paccione is like a mole on the ass of the gnat trying to FIND Musgrave.
Except of the dog-poo variety.
GoRams:
Polling can often be a fickel mistress. Un-scientific, push “polls” like this one should be questioned, and questioned vigorously.
If you call enough people, over enough days, from the right demographic you can get results to indicate anything you want. I’m sure Angie is hoping that this poll, which sounds to me like it was basically just a campaign robo-call with nothing scientific about it, will shift the focus away from the harshlight of of her supporter’s involvement in Poopgate.
I’m an Angie supporter, but these Perlmutter-like tactics are going to put her in the same place as Ed…out of the race.
If I didn’t dislike Musgrave so much I might have had to send her a campaign contribution. I got the call supposedly from Musgraves campaign as well, that turned into this biased poll after a couple questions. Angie stop spending your money on crap like this and start spending it so you can win the election, you are starting to remind me of Permutter. It’s crap like this (no pun intended) that loses us the election year after year.
Typical. Don’t like the message/shoot the messenger.
Angie is making a run of it and ‘Mad-Cow’ Musgrave’s supporters don’t like it.
I do not see evidence of a “push-poll” as the Musgrave supporters above suggest. The robo-call polls mentioned above do not seem to fit what happened here. If robo-calling was used, a poll of 600 voters would have gone a lot quicker than 7 days. Robo-call polls are often behind the “1000 people polled over 3 days” polls often used in corporate polling.
Just to be sure,I would like to see a poll be done by a media outlet and compare the outcomes of theo polls.
Conservatives continue their rhetorical ranting without any facts but rather “they called me asking this and that,” so it must be a “push-poll.” For those of you who are not pollsters, but rather political rookies, you need to learn not to be the back seat driver. Instead of blaming others for things not going your way, to a leadership role, not the role of someone who needs a car seat.
Musgrave is one of the most conservative representatives in the US. Bush’s ratings are dropping, Congresses ratings are dropping and people truly do want someone new in control of the purse strings.
I see more proof, not push polling.
Hey, when I go fishing for a week, I’d better be coming back with a catch!
Or a really good fish story.
Seems like we’re getting the latter out of Paccione. Disgusting, but then again we’ve seen worse (and worse, the poll was taken before DogPoopGate hit the fan).
Heh.
Paccione would have to kill someone with her bare hands, resurrect them, and kill them again for me not to hold my nose and vote for her! Marilyn “wedge issue” Musgrave is NUTS! Period, paragraph- no next line!
Just as a test, can any of Musgraves supporters tell me one piece of legislation she has written (NOT co-sponsored, but actually written) that would bring the troops home from Iraq, steady the markets, lower the deficit or anything like that? Just give me the bill number so I can look it up and read it!
Um… have many of you forgotten that Musgrave has been voted one of the KKKs favorite legislatures. She is one of the most partisan members of Congress. Have you forgetten that Musgrave’s political platform has been built mostly on bigotry over her term in office. I don’t see why it is so hard to believe that CD-4 may go to Paccione this year. Musgrave’s last election was so close, and it is possible that she is in serious trouble this time around. I am not proud to be represented by this woman. I have no problem with Republican candidates, in general, but Musgrave has strayed from standing for what CD-4 really cares about and needs. We badly need a change in representation.
Anyone from Angie’s campaign want to post the poll script for review?
Musgrave will beat Paccione. Musgrave has a solid fiscal record record and she will trample Paccione. Paccione is the person who wants to give in-state tuition to illegal immigrants. Paccione is has only a record of reckless spending in the CO Legislature.
Outside of Fort Collins, Paccione has absolutely no appeal. These poll results were obviously from a push-poll. There’s no way people want Paccione over Musgrave.
As for the accuracy of this poll, you only need ask one question: Whay hasn’t Musgrave released a poll yet?
Collar the thought that Angie may Kibble n’Bits Marilyn in this tight greyhound race. Likely, Marilyn kennel’t win without unleashing bones of money that will drain Republican water bowls. Angie could lap up this election if she dogs Marilyn about real issues.
What is interesting is that Musgrave in the last 7 months has spent $1.1 million dollars campaigning. Not to mention her 7 tax-payer funded campaign mailers that she claims are constituent services informaiton.
The people in the 4th aren’t stupid, they want new representation.
Hey, Musgrave will win – how did Marilyn vote on the Federal budget? Fiscal responsibility my ***.
The numbers may be slanted but Musgrave did have the slimmest margin of victory of any incumbent in 2004, did she not? She slipped from an 11 point win to a 6 point win in 2 years against the same opponent, one who was at a major financial disadvantage as well. I’d imagine that Musgrave has a decent lead right now but with a strong campaign and continued distrust of Bush and Congress nationally it’s concievable that she could lose. I wouldn’t bet on it right now but it’s a long summer.
Financial disadvantage?
How much money did those Pink Lady ads cost???
Paccione needs those 527s to come to her rescue just to make this a contest. Or at the very least, better campaign staff.
There is not one person on this website that has the slightest idea what a campaign poll is. This is my second comment on this website and I just can’t believe all the weird comments about polls here. This is not a robocall push poll–it is a huge sample CD poll that show serious vulnerability for Musgrave–much like polls across the country are showing for Pro-Bush republican incumbents in marginal districts everywhere. If you need confirmation, go to http://www.thepollingreport.com and look at how republican congressional incumbents are faring across the country at this point (you need a subscription to see state and CD polls, but it’s worth it). Morevoeve, the Repubs are behind the Dems on the national generic Congressional trial heats by 10-14 points in every major national poll in the past few months–at least some of that is what surely is happening in Colorado CD 4.
Well don’t be such a stranger walker.
Who paid for the poll?
PJ,
So let me get this straight, “you (Republicans) need to learn not to be the back seat driver. Instead of blaming others for things not going your way, to a leadership role, not the role of someone who needs a car seat.”
Acutally, this like the chief criticizms of the current Democratic party, you know, the minority party that STILL has zero message and zero solutions to our nation’s problems other than we are not them.
Yeah, I’m not sure what there is to attack in this Paccione poll. Doing 600 interviews over 7 days is not out of the question, as they may have skipped Friday and Saturday calling. When you call those days, you can end up with skewed demographics (low on young people and parents). So if they did skip those days, they would have done 600 calls over 5 nights. With a 20 minute survey, that’s not at all unusual.
Also, Andrew Myers does not do robo-call polls (I should know, I’m one of his competitors). Whereas, the 9News poll done by Survey USA that was announced recently in CD-7, that was a robo-call poll.
I smell bulls***. Or in this case, dog s***.
Walker, don’t give me crap about how this makes perfect sense and I’m just too dumb to understand it. Try explaining this:
“On Musgrave’s re-election: 51% of voters ‘believe it’s time for someone new'”
Which means obviously that 49% believe it’s NOT time for someone new–they’ll stick with Marilyn. But…
“If the election were held today: 37% would vote for Musgrave”
Sorry, walker, this thing stinks. Either explain those discrepancies or back off the “fools” who have the nerve to question this data.
Well the obvious answer, Garbage, is that of those 49% you don’t want a change, they also don’t care enough either way to vote for her. I would say around 12%.
Garbage,
A two-term incumbent who’s spent over $1 million, and a majority of voters think it’s time for someone new? Maybe that “culture of corruption” spiel has had an effect after all?
And your logic stinks like garbage, Undecideds are going to decide this thing in the end.
When’s Musgrave going to release her numbers?
Musgrave has name recognition: nothing else. But in this age of “bead and circuses” (well, minus the bread) sometimes that’s all you need.
Like another local Congressman, Musgrave has latched onto a sensational issue and is riding it for all it’s worth – without actually accomplishing anything. However, she’s not nearly as entertaining and flamboyant so she might actually have a tougher time of it in ’06.
Interesting that Musgrave has not released her internals yet.
When a Democrat runs a poll that essentially says “if you run your campaign flawlessly, you lose by 1 point” — that’s bad news for Paccione.
Garbage, did it ever occur to you that there is probably a significant precentage who answer “not sure”. Just because 51% say someone new, doesn’t mean 49% say definitely re-elect.
Similarly, just becuase 37% say they are voting for Musgrave doesn’t mean that 63% are for Paccione.
I’d like to issue a challenge to Musgrave backers: Find one poll in the last 5 years — even a partisan poll – conducted by a reputable pollster that shows a majority of people answering “someone new” to this question about an incumbent.
I’ve certainly seen incumbents with low percentages on “re-elect”, but I can’t remember seeing any incumbent of either party with 51% saying it’s time for someone new.
Paccione:
Declares bankruptcy so you and I can pay for her grad. degrees.
Pays at least $1,500 in fines to the SoS for failure to comply w/ CO election law.
Has at least three liens placed on her property by HOA because she fails to pay dues.
Blames staffer for selling a seat/intro on House floor.
Obtains by questionable means email addresses from CSU students and uses them in fund raising try.
Can’t spell agriculture or water.
Can spell taxes and homosexual.
Marilyn:
Sends too many mailings.
Hum? Doesn’t look like to me there is any question who has the integrity/character I want in congress. Go Marilyn!
