Tag Team on Lamborn

  • by: Colorado Pols

Republican candidates Jeff Crank and Duncan Bremer are teaming up on fellow CD-5 candidate Doug Lamborn to “stop the lies.” Crank and Bremer sent this letter to Lamborn, which begins:

We write respectfully to ask you to correct false information spread by your campaign recently. In unfair attacks against both of us, your campaign made untrue statements about our alleged support of tax increases that are false?period. We ask that you document the basis for these untruths. If your investigation reveals the truth, that the assertions are false, then you must apologize.?

  1. Is Lamborn still in the race?

Lamborn’s bizarre hatred of other conservatives is baffling. I’m sure “Conservative Hero” will come in with his Howard Dean-like references to liberal media supporting Lamborn, but at this point Lamborn looks done.

  2. Crank dropped out? He won the vote at the assembly just a couple of weeks ago! Is that some kind of joke?

Lamborn can try libel to make up ground, but he keeps slipping.

Hefley got 71% in the last election, and is now endorsing Crank. If Lamborn really wants to take the seat in a new direction, he should switch parties and challenge Fawcett. Until Lamborn gets his act together and does some serious apologizing, he has no chance of being elected to any office as a Republican.

  3. ManoftheHour (Lamborn intern),

In case you are wondering, Bremer is that guy who had the guts to call you to the table after your campaign screwed up.  His credibility is pretty strong compared to yours at this point, but apparently your campaign is more concerned with staying out of the limelight than doing the right thing and correcting your misstatements.

I have thought Lamborn was at least a decent person up until this point, albeit a bit dull; but he really needs to do the right thing and issue a correction statement and apology.  I am big on character, and this really damaged Lamborn in my book.  This is well beyond spin, this is a lie that needs to be corrected.

  4. How much further can Lamborn fall? What kind of advice is he getting? Maybe Lamborn’s campaign manager is telling him right now, “Slander Joel Hefley and say that the military is filled with homosexuals.”

    Goodbye Doug.

  5. Talk about stupid comments…
There is only one reason why two candidates vying for the same office would co-author a letter such as the one above:

    They are screwed.

Obviously they both have done polling that shows exactly how screwed they actually are and figure that if they can’t beat Lamborn, they’ll run his name into the ground so far he can’t win.
I think it is telling that Anderson and Rivera haven’t bothered to get in on the letter… Obviously they are still in the hunt or not ashamed of their stands on C&D.
All I remember is that both Crank and Bremer were big C&D fans last summer and then a part of the “Let’s put C&D Behind Us” crowd after the November election. Now they want us to believe they were in the opposition and this little stunt is their latest version of re-writing history.
Here’s the real tragedy though… It seems Duncan wrote the letter first then… Yeah, Jeff plagiarized it. So sad. 😉

  6. I’ve seen all of the CD-5 candidates speak and debate and can honestly say that Lamborn is by far the worst of the bunch.  I expected to be impressed by him, but all he kept saying over and over is “I’m a proven conservative”..blah.blah.blah.

At least Crank and Bremer can come up with some original thoughts, if you’ve ever heard Lamborn speak, then you’ve heard Lamborn speak, it’s always the same spiel.  In fact and I challenge you to do this, watch the mouth’s of the other candidates while Lamborn is speaking and you’ll notice that they know his spiel word for word.  He’s simply that predictable.  I don’t live in the 5th anymore, but if I did I know who I wouldn’t vote for!

  7. I would really like to see Lamborn come straight out and address this publicly.  In the last Gazette article, he hid behind Hotaling and did not give a comment.  It will be interesting to see if he has the strength of character to come out and do the right thing.

I find it interesting that even the Lambornites on this site don’t have a good excuse for his actions.  I am very disappointed that someone who touts being a conservative would pull this kind of stunt and not set the record straight.

  8. I have been watching, reading and attending many events regarding this race.  This recent event reminds me what my Dad use to say, “when you squeeze a orange you should get orange juice.” I imagine Lamborn feels a little squeezed right now, and I don’t see “Conservative Values” coming out.

  9. C & D are great ways to judge any Republican candidate.  You can’t just say you were against them.  It really matters that you actually WORKED to defeat them.  Only one candidate can claim that in the CD 5 race.  Obviously that is Lamborn.

  10. Something has certainly changed in this race. For months we have been bombarded by “Crank is God” variety of commentary, but in the last week it’s all been about running down Lamborn instead of talking up Jeff… What gives?

I mean seriously has Jeff had a staff shakeup to account for the difference in messaging?

Or is there really a poll out there showing Crank and Bremer circling the drain?

Sorry to be so uninformed, but we’ve been busy up here cleaning up Angie’s dog poop. Ha, ha!

  11. What difference does it make what he supported if the guy does not have the character to do the right thing?  That brings into question any action he takes.  So he was opposed to C&D when he knew he would use it in the election.  Big deal.  I like to see people (and hopefully politicians) do the right thing when people don’t notice or when it hurts them to do so. That is the true sign of character.  I don’t care who supported what if they don’t have the character or honesty to back it up.

  12. robert – “I like to see people (and hopefully politicians) do the right thing when people don’t notice or when it hurts them to do so. That is the true sign of character.”

You mean like when Crank plagiarized the policies of other members of congress to fill out his Policy pages on his web site? Is that the kind a character you’re looking for? Does Cranks habit of plagiarizing bring in to question any of the other actions he has taken?

  13. lamborn is the most original out of these guys!!! by taking the low road and throwing out loads of negativity he certainly won over my vote. seriously though, it’s tough to choose a candidate in this race because they’re all such idiots.

  14. Hey Monumental have u even seen any poll numbers for any of the candidates? Honsetly from what I’ve seen Lamborn is dead in the water because he’s not very engaging and he talks to the same set of people at events.

  15. When you’re the front-runner, you just ignore the other candidates.  That is what Lamborn is going to do here, he doesn’t need to acknowledge the other cry babies who are trying to victimize themselves.  Do we really want to send feel-sorry-for-themselves victims to Washington?  As far as lying, every claim that Lamborn makes is backed up by solid records that anyone can see anytime.  Even the nationally prominent Club For Growth is saying the same things about the tax raising candidates in this race, I think they know a thing or two about researching candidates and endorsing the right choice, Lamborn.  Go Doug, beat those RINOs!

  16. No, I don’t know of any specific polls, certainly none run by Crank or Bremer. I’m just throwing out an idea.
Competing candidates just don’t work together unless they know they have lost. Otherwise what is the point?

  17. Observer,

Here is what matters: fact and truth.  The CFG is wrong because Lamborn fed them bad info.  The statement that Bremer “voted to hike taxes three times” is quantitatively and provably false.  I am surprised that he has not slapped a libel suit on them because this is about the most blatantly provable lie I have seen in politics.  Asserting that because the CFG said it and Lamborn said it that it must be true is downright moronic.  By your logic, the earth was flat until about 500 years ago because the Pope said so.

The public records show clearly and unequivocally that Lamborn’s statements are false.  You consider yourself a Republican and yet you don’t stand up for character and integrity.  That is downright repugnant, and you should really consider if it is more important to elect someone with integrity or someone who is willing to lie when it is expedient.

  18. It is very difficult to successfully conduct a libel lawsuit if you are a public figure.  Further, it is usually contraindicated in the political sense – you gain nothing, and you stand to lose quite a deal.

  19. Crank is too aligned with the Beauprez Camp and most insiders know it.  Hefley’s influence began falling years ago.  Just he didn’t know it.  To say that someone who received 71% of the vote, when unopposed is somewhat disturbing.  Lets see, if a person received 73% out of a possible 100% and they were unopposed, that means then that 27% of the voters walked into the voting booth and while voting for other candidates, walked away from Hefley.

Wasn’t the first time.  And wouldn’t be the last.  For Crank to bring out all of the Hefley baggage, and tying it with a pretty establishment hack bow will not wash here.  First, Crank is not Hefley, Second, Lamborn has the credentials.  Bremer is swimming up stream in the hopes of gaining ground.

Tying himself to Crank and attempting to look like innocent victims at a traffic accident is flawed campaigning strategy.  Instead, the strategy starts looking more like a Patty Duke Love Fest.

Advice to Lamborn, IGNORE, IGNORE, IGNORE.  Why should Lamborn apologize?  For saying the truth?  For Bremeer to intimate that he never voted for a tax increase?  Okay, lets get technical.  Bremer voted to allow the people to decide.  So that’s how that works.  If he had any spine he would have taken a stand in the first place…its called just say NO.

  20. Wrong Robert, CFG does their own research on all candidates.  If they got involved in this race it is because they feel Doug is best for the job compared to what they have found out about the other candidates.

  21. If you are right, it does not bode well for the CFG.  This was a major blunder to post what is clearly a false statement about Bremer on their website.  Credibility is paramount for an organization who tries to do what they are doing, and they blew it big time by saying something that is demonstrateably not true.

But it makes much more sense that Lamborn fed them lies about his opponents to sour them to the other candidates in the race.  Lamborn has been trumpeting the “Bremer voted to hike taxes” thing way before the CFG did so logically they got their misinformation from him.

What this really comes down to regardless of who started it is that Lamborn and the CFG have gotten busted in a clear lie.  You can try to explain away, but a lie is a lie is a lie.

Forgot to mention this earlier, you stated that Crank and Bremer supported C&D.  Check your facts before you state things you don’t know… oh wait, you work for Lamborn and facts don’t matter as long as Dougie says so.

  22. Hang on there Robert… You say that Lamborn mislead CFG? I thought that you said Bill Miller, head of CFG here in Colorado, was a Crank supporter… I am certain Lamborn was able to convince Toomey that Crank was a Taxman, but are you sure it wasn’t Miller who punked out Bremer in the hopes of knocking him off on Crank’s behalf?

Not that I’ve seen any emails or polls or anything… I am just yet again throwing an idea out there.

  23. i thought crank voted for C&D before he voted against it…or was it the other way araound?  Or the first way?  Oh that’s right – He has no record.

  24. Interesting theory, but I think if that were the case Lamborn would have hung Miller out to dry.  Best guess is that Lamborn did this all by himself and that is why he will not come forward to defend his integrity (or lack there of).

I also dont think that Lamborn or Crank took Bremer too serously until last week so that would also not support your theory.  Interesting idea though and if you can back it up, it would make quite a story.

  25. It is my understanding from attending the assembly that Crank nearly lost his job at the CS Chamber for his opposition to C&D. That is putting your job on the line for taking a position.

  26. While I think he did it for political reasons more than personal conviction, I have yet to find anyone who will give proof that Crank supported C&D in any way.  I have always thought he knew that Hefley was going to be out by last fall, and he knew that C&D would come up so he bucked the Chamber and opposed it.  Lamborn has been saying that he supported it, but no one will back that up with any fact.

The previous post about Bremer supporting C&D is downright laughable.  But I am learning a lot more about Lamborn and his supporters.  They are not constrained by truth so long as their lies hurt their opponents.

  27. Ok enough is enough — CFG and Toomey have been at this a very long time — no one mislead them — if the information is bad — and from what I am reading from some of these posts, that debateable, then it is CFG’s problem.  Crank would do well to keep quiet and let Bremer beat up on Lamborn….. At this point it just looks desperate on the part of Crank and Bremer.

    Rivera by 12…………

  28. Lamborn is hopelessly behind, and trying wild lies just to get his name in the paper. His wishy-washy record and bizarre behavior has essentially eliminated him from the race.

And I like Mr. Handy’s line of thinking of why Hefley isn’t popular in the district–he had no competition! Yes, that very clearly states that no one liked Hefley.

It still doesn’t make sense why any of the candidates would be talking about Lamborn. It would be like George Bush blasting a longshot like Ralph Nader before the election.

  29. Watfacts?  IF you’re using Handy to quote as an authority your are compounding misinformation. You posted “And I like Mr. Handy’s line of thinking of why Hefley isn’t popular in the district–he had no competition! Yes, that very clearly states that no one liked Hefley.” 2004 results: Joel Hefley (R) 71% Fred Hardee (D) 27% Arthur Roberts (L) 2%. The Dem usually gets 26 to 32%.  Hefley had opponents in 98, 02 and 04. He is hugely popular in his CD, even with Dems. Handy spins EVERYTHING against BB, he’s the strangest Holtzman supporter (shill) on this blog, never any reason to vote FOR Marc always spewing very nasty stuff about BB. Handy said, Hefley’s influence began falling years ago. Just he didn’t know it.” That’s Handys misinformed opinion, it is NOT fact. Handy doesn’t like Crank because as Handy says, “Crank is too aligned with the Beauprez” that’s fine and Handy’s opinion. That does NOT mean that Hefley does not have some influence and impact on this race. Here’s one for you, Crank wrote to Fawcett and said, Let’s just you and me debate, forget the rest of these candidates. Fawcett of course said, no way, everybody in the pool. It was Crank failing at positioning himself as the front runner against the Dem. It was a stupid move. But to count Crank out for aligning himself with Bremer or counting him out for any reason is not a good move at this point. Strange move wrote, “It’s weird that Crank/Bremer would even acknowledge Lamborn given that he’s no longer a factor in this race..” More opinion and spin, Lamborn is still in it. Monumental wrote, “Obviously they both have done polling that shows exactly how screwed they actually are and figure that if they can’t beat Lamborn.” SHOW US THE POLL!  Otherwise it’s just more opinion. UNLESS someone, out there beneath the big blue sky has seen a real live POLL that shows Lamborn is NOT a factor, or Crank is not a factor or any of the other candidates  they are all still in it.  Crank is the kind of guy who would use a Machiavellian move like teaming up with Bremer only to stab Bremer in the back when it becomes convenient (my opinion knowing Crank). This is some HIGH political theatre right now, and as of today, no one is really out of it totally, everyone is still campaigning and running hard. Crank and Lamborn can be said to be the “front runners”. All those other Dark Horses are stalking hard. I’m reminded of a campaign several years ago one Candidate said, “Green voted to raise your taxes by $5 billion dollars.” Green voted for the State Budget, the candidate making the claim got slammed hard in the Gazette and other newspapers. Lamborn is running a risk here with his statements about Crank and Bremer being big tax and spenders, but hey it’s “Who’s the most conservative time” and if it works against Dems why not do it to your Repub. opponents? It’s a risky strategy for Lamborn, but so is the strategy of Crank and Bremer teaming up. Fun political stuff!

  30. For Crank and Bremer to write a letter asking a fellow Republican to just stop using partical truths, is not teaming up.  They are just trying to tell the Lamborn camp to just stick to the facts or complete truths, and then let the cards fall as they may. I hope they all realize the true foe is “Jay Fawcett”. The people I talk with, the people who vote, not political insiders know the name of Bremer over Crank and Lamborn.  Even the people who are Crank or Lamborn supporters say Bremer is a man of intergity and a problem solver.

  31. Outside of El Paso Bremer, Lamborn, Rivera, Rayburn, and Anderson do not have huge name regonition. It will be interesting to see how these candidates try to reach rural voters, if they do at all.

  32. Roots,

Good post.  I found your comments interesting and insightful.  I would like to piggy back on your post in one area.  Bremer’s reputation is nothing less than outstanding among the people who have worked with him and know him.  Because of that, I have to give a lot of credibility to his dispute with Lamborn.  I think he would not have brought this up unless Lamborn was seriously out of line.  Bremer is not a hardball politician and I don’t see him blasting Lamborn unless he had a damn good reason.  Given Crank’s credibility problems following the plagiarism, he may have piggybacked onto Bremer’s attack because Bremer gives him much more credibility.

My opinion of Lamborn has drastically changed in the last week.  I have always thought of him as a dud personally and not the personality to go to Congress, but I thought he was a man of character.  Now I think he is the worst type of politician and could be incredibly damaging if elected to Congress.

  33. Hey Sally, get a grip!  You use a great deal of hyperbole, but Handy has a point.  The only reason Hefley is where he is relates simply to the fact that he hasn’t had a legitimate Republican Primary since 1986.  Look at the vote turnouts over the years.  There are precincts in El Paso County hwere Hefley actually did worse than other Repubs in the same precinct!!!  Forget the garbage about his Dem opponants.  Lets just look at his situation.

What legislation, of any significance, did Hefley bring to the table?  Yes, he continually fought to get his proverbial 1-4% cut in earmarks, but even that wasn’t successful.  He is left of Tancredo on budgetary spending.  He supports the National Endowment for the Arts (a liberal, left-wing supported group)with their funding of the arts (things like Jesus Christ in a glass of urine.  So what has he done?  What is his legacy?  What major battles in Washington did he do for Colorado?  Not much.

If Wayne Allard, is the Dullard.  Hefley is the invisible man.  Joel had a good ride, he could have been our Congressman for life.  Problem is, there would have been someone someday who took the old guy on.  And he would have lost.

You are more than welcome to place your nostalgic Hefley for Congress shirt into your shirt drawer and let it collect moths.  Soon Hefley will fade into the Reublican history books as simply a Congressman from Colorado.  Heck, people remember more about Dan Schaeffer, than they do about Hefley.

When you can cite an significant legislation sponsored by Joel that was passed into law and signed by the President, let me know.

  34. The important thing is that Doug Lamborn is sticking with Douglas Bruce–the two Dougs strategy.  I have even heard that Doug Lamborn has agreed that Douglas Bruce can be his legislative assistant in DC to write TABOR stuff for the Congress.  (Douglas Bruce will donate his salary to his charity think tank.)  If this is true, then I am optimistic.  I can think of no better team than Doug and Doug to represent the taxpayers!

  35. Ha!  Good one!

They will tell us what is best for us like good government officials ought to.  We will not need to worry about anything or stay informed because Doug and Doug will be there to make decisions for us and will protect us from our stupid selves.  They know all and we are sheep who can not decide our own way without Doug and Doug as our shepherds.

  36. annonymous, It’s contradictory to say, The only reason Hefley is where he is relates simply to the fact that he hasn’t had a legitimate Republican Primary since 1986.” AND, “he could have been our Congressman for life.”

  37. RkyMtnRep

Bremer might not be the number 1 name ID in the surrounding 5 counties, but I believe he could be number two or three.  I say this because, of his work with the Water issues through out the district, along with his work to stop Funding of abortions in El Paso county.  Since I am into the outside riding and running, his work on the Santa Fe trail means alot to me.  I have my ranking of the Candidates, and its almost the opposite of the political insiders.  I am looking for a public servant who knows this area, and has shown me he can solve problems.

  38. Hey A butternut, I didn’t mean to rank the candidates. But if I did by how I think they are doing as of today, it would be; Crank, Lamborne, Rivera, Bremer, Anderson, and then Rayburn.
By the way I think Bremer is a quality gentleman, I just don’t think he is going to get the seat.
    Best Regards,
    RkyMtnRep
