This past weekend, our nation was once again traumatized by mass gun violence directed against innocent people. In Dayton Ohio, a man clad in body armor and carrying an assault rifle with a 100-round drum killed ten people, while in El Paso Texas a white nationalist terrorist claimed the lives of at least 22 people in a Walmart, with dozens more wounded in both places.
Here in Colorado in 2019—where we too have endured the senseless tragedy of mass gun violence repeatedly in our recent history—we passed a common-sense law to give families and law enforcement a way to protect us all from gun violence with extreme risk protection orders to temporarily remove firearms from people who pose a significant risk to themselves or others.
After this weekend’s tragic mass shootings, President Donald Trump and his daughter Ivanka Trump have both called for the passage of “red flag” laws like Colorado’s to reduce the toll of gun violence in America. The same law that Republicans want to recall Democratic lawmakers like Sen. Pete Lee and Gov. Jared Polis for passing.
It was Trump’s own xenophobia and appeals to racism over the last few years that have energized the racist right, and helped create the climate in which the violence we saw in El Paso Saturday can happen again and again. The consequences of this political strategy are now plain for everyone to see. We don’t need Donald Trump to tell us that what we’re doing in Colorado to reduce gun violence is the right thing. But it’s past time for Trump’s party to stop their senseless attacks on Colorado lawmakers who aren’t afraid to do it.
Thanks for everything you’ve done to hold Trump accountable and fight back for common sense solutions to problems like gun violence. Here are a bunch of great ways to take action for the week of August 5:
AFSC & Coloradans For Immigrant Rights: August Vigil at GEO Immigrant Detention Center
We gather each quarter to stand together for our neighbors and our families and against detention and deportation. The spirit of this vigil is to lift the stories and experience of real people struggling to overcome the extreme consequences of ensnarement in our dehumanizing immigration and criminal justice systems. All people are important to the fabric of our community and deserve our support. Our unforgiving immigration system treats people cruelly and unfairly, both inside detention centers and through deportation that rips families and communities apart.

2019 One Colorado For All Statewide Tour – Louisville
As the state’s largest advocacy organization for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) Coloradans and their families, we’ve worked hard for the legal and political advancements we’ve achieved. As many of us know, legal equality and representation in elected offices does not eliminate the lived equality gap that affects many of us in our day-to-day lives. We are excited to announce our 2019 One Colorado For All Statewide Tour with seventeen stops all across the state, taking us from Grand Junction to Fort Collins, from Steamboat to Alamosa, from Pueblo to Aspen.
