At Least He's Not Your Congressman

  • by: Colorado Pols
Pennsylvania Republican Rep. Mike Kelly

In another edition of our long-running feature, “At Least They’re Not Your Elected Official,” we take you the halls of Congress (via Pennsylvania), where one Republican Congressman is trying out some new talking points on racism in politics.

As CNN reports:

A white Republican congressman said Tuesday that he isn’t offended by President Donald Trump’s racist attacks on four Democratic congresswomen of color because he’s “a person of color.”

“You know, they talk about people of color. I’m a person of color. I’m white. I’m an Anglo Saxon. People say things all the time, but I don’t get offended,” Rep. Mike Kelly of Pennsylvania told Vice News. [Pols emphasis]

The statements were made as the House was considering a resolution condemning the racist language Trump used on Sunday in a series of tweets in which he told Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Rashida Tlaib, Illhan Omar and Ayanna Pressley to “go back” to their home countries. The comments touched off a firestorm, though House Republicans have largely defended Trump and overwhelmingly voted Tuesday night to oppose the resolution.

Well, this is not at all completely tone deaf or disrespectful of the challenges faced by other people. Would it surprise you to know that Rep. Kelly was not one of the four Republicans who voted in favor of yesterday’s resolution condemning President Trump’s racist remarks?

  1. Henceforth, he should be referenced as U.S. Representative Mike Kelly (R/POC/POS- PA).

Next he will tell us that his ancestors were sold into slavery during the potato blight, or that he was denied employment because he looked too pasty.

  2. On the other hand, the more AOC, Tlaib, Omar, and Pressley run their mouths, the more support they lend to getting Trump re-elected.

Unfortunately, none of the four have demonstrated much ability to think strategically.

      1. Pelosi has things going the way they should; investigate the crapola out of Trump and keep him off guard.

If the "Squad of 4" really wants Trump out, then think strategically and stop giving Trump opportunities to fire up his stupid base.

    1. Bullshit, CHB. The evidence that they “think strategically”? They were elected, handily, from their districts, by voters who wanted them to speak up just as they are doing now.

Even Tom Perez, the DNC head, called them “The Future of our party.”

Kindly save your concern and reform efforts for your own Republican Party. They need you.

      1. Just so you know, MJ, AOC now has a Dem primary opponent for next year. Don't recall her name right off, but she is a woman of color with a Jamaican background.

And there you go again, MJ, trying to censor somebody else's opinion.

        1. Also, the New York Times reports AOC's protege, Tiffany Cabàn lost the queens DA race, albeit by just 16 votes in a still incomplete canvas.  All you wave of the future types may have to wait a while for your revolution.

. The apparent winner, Melinda Katz, was backed by Joseph Crawley, the AOC nemesis.
Cabàn’s pledge to release suspects charged with violent frlonies felonies without bail seems to have been a bridge too far, as indeed it should be.
There are about 91,000 ballots in the recount.

        2. Trying to censor you? No, calling your nonsense out for what it is- nonsense. Do you really not get the difference?. Let me translate, in slightly more decorous language:

Unfortunately, none of the four have demonstrated much ability to think strategically.

CHB, I believe that you are mistaken. All four of these Congresswomen have demonstrated that they a) know how to appeal to their voters to get elected b) know how to work the media, including social media, for maximum impact, c) know how to keep the public's eyes on the prize of what needs to be done in the country, as opposed to Trumpty’s latest distract–a-mole effort. They demonstrated this in their joint press conference responding to the President's racist insults.

Kindly watch the linked video of the press conference to see brilliant strategery in action.

Since you have often stated that you are a Republican, and will continue to vote Republican whenever possible, I fail to see why you continually go out of your way to criticize progressives on the left wing of the Democratic Party. Perhaps your critiques would be better spent on reforming the Party to which you belong and to which you are actually loyal.

          Or, more succinctly: Bullshit, CHB.

          1. "bullshit, CHB……"  MJ: the goal is to get rid of Trump in November, 2020. Every Dem, Independent, and common sense R should have that as a goal.

You and others going "all out McGovern" isn't going to help achieve the goal.

              1. Nooo, change has to be made gradually, so no one is startled, or starts asking difficult questions, like; "You guys were in charge for all those years…why didn't we do this sooner?"

                1. “you don’t get to dictate…..” I’ll offer, Curmudgeon, since you also like to censor others, that my thoughts are the least of your worries. Seems like every time you try to "match wits" with Voyageur, he ends up owning your ass. Maybe you need to up your game?

                    1. Funny how reminding people that others don't have to take their "advice" is considered censorship.  It's almost as if they've spent decades not used to anyone talking back.

                  1. No one's censoring you, and I'm not surprised that you would consider a vile troll to be your ally.  You all do follow a certain mindset.
Kind of your own little “squad”, as it were.

                    1. Hey Curmy, is it time for you to throw a tantrum, break the rules, and "out" me again.  For, what, the sixth time?  Trolls out people, it's their nature, and you know you want to!

                      Tee hee.

                    2. Deleted in an unmerited act of mercy toward a humiliated curmudgeon.

                      Burma Shave

                    3. Wow. That's some Reader's Digest level erotica you got goin' there, V.   It explains so much.

                    4. I'm not the one laying out his 1950's naughty fantasies for all to see, pal.

Tick- tock.   And it ain't going backwards.

                    5. Actually, Scurvy, you were the one who bragged about knowing the six dominatrix!  You brought it up!  You thought we'd be impressed.

I guess, in one sense, we were.

I bet your wife was, too.

                      Does she read pols?

                      Tee hee and ta ta!

                    6. You brought it up as an insult. I pointed out it's not, unless you're a repressed septuagenarian in a crusty bathrobe.   As for any of my loved ones, you'll know nothing about them.  The thought of ol' (crusty) Bathrobe Bob having his sticky, slimy thoughts on anyone I care about is abhorrent.

Such a legacy you're leaving. What would the folks in the Newsroom think?

                      Perhaps they already knew.

                  2. Getting a bit hot for you, CHB? Abandoning argument and going for the personal attacks? I like you better when you’re pompously advising your opposing political party on strategy.

Just FYI, nobody’s trying to censor you. Challenging or arguing or disagreeing with your ideas is not censorship.

Very rarely, people get censored on here. I have been. I’m sure that you never have, and never will be.

                    1. Don't worry, CHB, MJ doesn't go full "Ride of the Valkyries" until R&R weighs in to suggest that moderate Democrats are people worthy of respect too.

                    2. "Personal attacks," MJ. Like you referring to me giving "pompous advice?"

But, hey, politics is all in good fun, just like Mark Twain and H.L. Mencken used to hint and say.

                    3. Dang, MJ…I guess not showing proper deference to someone's unsolicited, condescending advice is now a "personal attack".

Are we having another summer blizzard? 'Cause there sure are a lot of snowflakes floating around…

                  3. CHB, there is a lot of hypocrisy at work here.

People like Curmy and MJ like to preach about how important it is to welcome new people into voting for Democratic candidates but that only applies if they are Socialists, Democratic Socialists, Trotskyites, and Bernie Bros.

If they happen to be normal people who are looking for common sense solutions to real problems and which solutions are made proportionate to the problem, they're not interested.

Go back to (the political party) where you came from!

                    1. Since Curmy boasted a few week ago that he "knows six dominatrixes," I think we can safely assume he's not one of the "normal people" that he scorns.

                      have a nice taws, Scurvy.

                    2. If someone thinks that knowing hot, sex-positive women who like leather and tattoos is something to insult someone over…

…it certainly explains a lot about the older generation's issues with women, now doesn't it?  So many repressed old men with nothing to do about it now but pound their lil' keyboards in frustration.

                    3. Oh, Curmy, you have to pay women to beat you.  Your mom used to do that for free!

                      tee hee

            1. "Just so you know, MJ, AOC now has a Dem primary opponent for next year. Don't recall her name right off, but she is a woman of color with a Jamaican background."

It's hilarious to think that is all you thought was relevant.

Like people of color cancel each other out, somehow.

                1. Oh, you meant a Republican. CHB.The link I posted is about a threatened primary. Good luck taking AOC out in a primary. Her district's crazy about her.

Sorry this reply landed in your box, MJ.

                  1. This thread’s wrecked, anyway. Thanks, guys.

2 points, though (not for you, cook – you already know):
                    1. Avoid taking bait in the future.
                    https://i.imgur.com/3JYpT89.gif

                    2. Get your facts straight. It isn’t true that none of the four defeated Republicans. AOC defeated a Republican in the 2018 general election, Anthony Pappas. . So did Ilhan Omar – her Republican opponent, Abdimalik Askar, withdrew rather than face her. . Rashida Tlaib and Ayanna Pressley ran unopposed.
They didn’t “take seats” from Democrats – Democratic voters liked these women’s messages better, because they promised to shake things up and be disruptive. It’s what the voters wanted. It’s called democracy.
If you have beef with some statement or vote these women made, kindly quote or link to their comments, rather than just robotically repeating the right wing talking points about how they’re so disruptive and disrespectful, so….uppity and don’t know their place.

So don’t take bait and quote real quotes and votes, not third hand right wing memes.

                    1. Golly, two of them had general election opponents!  Wow.  In safely Democratic districts.  Not one of them beat a Republican incumbent or won an open seat last held by a retiring Republican.

I'll stick with the 40 moderates who turned seats blue from red.   You can have the four that went from moderate democrat to radical left.

To repeat not one of the motormouth four won a republican seat.  They held seats already safely democrat which, as R&R said, a geranium could have done.

And AoC's acolyte just lost the DA race in Queens to a candidate backed by her foes.

      2. They were elected, handily, from their districts

Yeah, they managed to get elected running as Democrats in districts where a geranium with a "D" next to it could win. It's an accomplishment comparable to  Doug Lamborn winning in CD 5 with the letter "R" next to his name.

      3. Not one of the motormouth four took a seat from a republican.  I'll listen first and foremost to the 40 democrats, overwhelmingly moderates, who threw out republicans and gave us the house.

        1. Not so coincidentally yesterday, Perlmutter and Crow voted in favor of tabling the impeachment resolution. Might they be angling for the Dems to told the House in 2021?

    2. Actually those four women cause Trump to go nuts tweeting back all kinds of racist shit. They get under his skin so bad he can't think of anything else. I hope they keep tweaking him every day from now until the election.

    3. CHB, they are the left wing's version of Louie Gohmert, Ted Yoho, and Mark Meadows.  The difference:  they can't make a motion to vacate the chair like the Tea Party did to John Boehner because Nancy Pelosi and the Dems changed that rule.

  3. "Normal" people?  So, what sets you apart from those weirdos?

Well, for one thing, Curmy, if I ask a question, I generally give the party responding to the question a way of answering it. Since your post lacked a Reply, I am posting it here.

As for the substance of the question, I use the term "normal people" to differentiate from ideological shills who are still wedded to some long  discredited economic model.

More specifically, many of us would agree that 30 million people having problems accessing health care is an issue warranting some attention. But only a few of us would toss out the system that currently works adequately for 250 million people in this country to try something which is economically and administratively not feasible to address the problem of the 30 million.

    1. None of us control the site. There is either a reply or not – not by choice

Ideological shills – which I would count so called "moderates" who just want what's least upsetting.

Obamacare sort of works. But it inflates a for-profit market solution to medical care and insurance that leads to bizarre results.  No economist would support this model if given a choice. But as the transition from what it was pre-ACA, it is an improvement.

Access to medical services should work like electricity. Pretty nearly universally accessible and reliable.

      1. Obamacare sort of works.

I was paying $1,200 per month for coverage before ACA. It went down to $651 per month after ACA. It works just fine for me. But why take my anecdotal word on it when you have Bernie Sanders and his half-baked economic theories.

And your solution is to turn health care over to the good government employees who operate the Division of Motor Vehicles, the Postal Service and the Border Patrol people – a few of whom treat those they incarcerate humanely but most of whom do not.

FYI, electricity is provided through privately-owned but publicly regulated corporations.

        1. Obamacare clearly and obviously works better than what we had before Obamacare, but that's not really a great argument for Obamacare over ways to structure healthcare which aren't the way we had before Obamacare was implemented. Obamacare being better than one particular system in no way implies that there exists no system that's better than Obamacare.

          1. The perfect is always enemy of the good.  Obamacare saves me $500 a month.  Make sure you have the votes and financing in place before replacing it with a better plan, which I would suggest is Canadian style single payer, not British style socialism.

            1. "The perfect shouldn't be the enemy of the good" doesn't even apply, here. No one is arguing that we should fight against the implementation of Obamacare b/c there are systems better than Obamacare. People are arguing that we should fight for a system better than Obamacare b/c there are systems better than Obamacare.

              1. Are you seriously arguing that no one wants to destroy Obamacare without a better alternative in place?  You need to read less of octogenarian Italian anarchists and more of the Republican platform.

Trump and his minions are desperately trying to destroy obamacare!

                    1. The context is that you said "no one" and were totally wrong.  As usual, you're too vain to Admit you screwed up again!

  4. Dp, consider context and intent. The poster calling you “vain “ has 18 out of his 20 some posts on ruining this 85 post thread alone being abusive, nasty, and insulting towards Curmudgeon, , myself, you, and another poster. In his swollen ego state, he probably considers even his child abuse jokes about “pounding on a child” to be hilarious. I don’t. Granted, Curmy snapped that bait right up, but you don’t have to.

However, there’s no vanity on his part that he will ever admit to. In his mind, it’s perfectly normal to take up 1/4 of the posts on a given thread with his dumb ass revenge games. In his mind, Pols readers lap that shit up. If they’re turned off and never return, well, it isn’t his fault. Pols  never censures or censors him, so, like his role model Trump, he has no reason to ever change his behavior.

He starts out rational, then starts with the ad hominem attacks. Every freaking time. He’s now at that stage with you.  The best thing for you to do is disengage now and find someone else with whom to discuss health care law.
