    1. I think the display is only partly to gratify his ego and love of scary, shiny toys.

It’s a display of military might, intended to intimidate. I’m sure Yamster gets advice on how to subjugate the people from all of his dick-tater pals.

      1. I respectfully disagree; I think it's completely about his ego and the egos of his slack-jawed, knuckle-dragging, mouth-breathing fans.   No enemy is intimidated by him, and any enemy already knows we have tanks and guns and stuff.

        1. The "enemies" he's trying to intimidate are us: journalists, dissidents, leftists, people of color, protesters, uppity women, queer folks, immigrants…our whole motley crew.

This really is a play out of the instruction manual for autocrats: show your home folks you ain't playing about being in control. Show them who controls the tanks and the soldiers, in case they get any ideas about rebellion and revolution.

He's already buddies with our traditional "enemies": Russia, North Korea, and the home country of the 9/11 terrorists, Saudi Arabia. If ISIS would flatter him and had lots of money or cool places to build hotels, he'd be friends with them, too.

What we can do is keep persisting, keep resisting; remember Masha Gessen's rules for surviving an autocrat:

          1. Believe he means what he says. 2. Do not be taken in by small signs of normality.3. Institutions will not save you. 4. Be outraged. 5. Don't compromise. 6. Remember the future.

          1. I understand your perspective, and while I'm not discounting it, I don't share it.  Trump is a coward, who can't even stand up to the weakest of genuine autocrats.  The show is for him and his ilk to stop feeling inadequate.

And as for the military, they're not mindless. The lowest ranking service member can refuse any order, if it's unlawful.

        1. Hell, even the Abrams dates back to about 1980.  I would have loved to have a real Sherman or two in the parade.  Anything that beat Hitler is worth celebrating.

          1. “Our army manned the air, it rammed the ramparts, it took over the airports, it did everything it had to do, and at Fort McHenry, under the rockets’ red glare, it had nothing but victory,” — President Trump

            1. I can’t believe that President Donald Butarski forgot to give even one shout out to General Patton, with his Sherman tanks and his Minuteman missiles, storming up the beaches, in the face of all those English Panzer divisions, and turning the tide at Bunker Hill??? . . .

(. . . I mean, WTF was all the fuss about needing tanks at his campaign parade for if you’re not even gonna’ mention ‘em once when you’re surrounded by them???)

. . . and, just why is President Orange all the sudden so cozy again now with the English and their Queen??! Not even one tariff??!

  1. Wishing everyone a yuge Pfruity-tooty Pfourth !!!

(Never thought I’d ever see the day that some dingus could ruin fireworks??!)

    1. The squalid conditions led to the creation of the United States of America Club, later shortened to United Club, a membership arrangement by which travelers could obtain yogurt-covered pretzels and tortilla soup while waiting for their flight!

  2. The big earthquake in Califonia yesterday isn't the whole story. The entire West Coast of the continent is shaking today, From British Columbia all the way down to the Baja Peninsula. If you have family anywhere on the Left Coast, you might want to check in with them. Scroll the left-hand column at the link to see over a hundred jiggles and jolts in the last couple of days.

    https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/map/

          1. Actually you're all wrong. Pat Robertson and his like will say that these earthquakes are god's "punishment" for gay marriage and abortion.

  3. I have completely forgotten – is Eastasia executive order evil or good?

Or is this one of those things like huge budget deficits where they are evil if the President has a (D) but good when he has the (R)?

    But then –
    Congress: No.
    SCOTUS: No.

How is an EO even possible?

  4. Remember when the CO Springs "preacher" prayed for rain during Obama's speech during the '08 DNC?  Didn't happen.

God must not like Trump since it poured rain on his parade.

    1. I think the Middle-Eastern dude who spoke no English, was a flaming socialist, practiced universal health care and reminded the rich it was easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter heaven has about had it with these old, white pricks (while enjoying the fact their spot in heaven can be occupied by an immigrant or two).

      1. why you gotta be so complicated?

        Jeshu loves immigrants.
        And me and you.

Know how I know?  Jesus loves everyone.

And if wanted to ride a dinosaur- fine by me.

        1. I’m pretty sure this new crop of #ProsperityGospel false prophets are pushing Jesus’ boundaries on ‘love everyone’.  Maybe their Trump coins I’m hearing about on the radio today will be their golden ticket through the Pearly Gates!

          1. OUAT, I saw a business plan for Rapture Insurance

I estimated billions in value – but cannot be called "insurance" and sold anywhere in the US.

            1. Madco , how in  Hell (or Heaven, for that matter) does one collect on rapture insurance?

Another example that “A sucker is born every minute.”

              1. One "plan" (don't recall if it was real or snark) I saw proposed a pay-out

                • to the insured if the Rapture did not sweep him up in the sky; or
                • if the person WAS swept up, the money could go named "remainers," and
                • if everyone went, the money would be paid to a ministry designed to find and evangelize those "left behind."

As i recall, the ministry and the sponsors of the plan had significant overlap in their controlling boards.

      2. You have pointed in the right direction, Michael. It was Sinclair Lewis who said, " When Fascism comes to America, it will be wrapped in the flag and carrying a bible"

        Does hugging a flag count?

One of The ODs' most reliable sources of support is the evangelical Christian community. Its members are accustomed to unquestioning faith. It feeds the Trumplican© Fascism machine…

…and launders a shitpile of cash.

        1. Pastor Max Lucado Baffled Over Evangelical Trump Supporters (this from a preacher who has some rather extreme views on certain Biblical subjects)

[I] would never have said anything if he didn't call himself a Christian. It'd be none of my business whatsoever to make any comments about his language, his vulgarities, his slander of people, but I was deeply troubled … that here's a man who holds up a Bible one day, and calls a lady "bimbo" the next. Here's a man who calls himself a Christian and yet just has the audacity to make fun of a lady's menstrual cycle. … He didn't just do this on occasion, but repeatedly, unrepentantly. Somebody sent me a list of 64 people he's called loser. Just this week it's continued. …

It deeply concerns me that somebody who knows little or nothing about the Christian faith would hear Mr. Trump call himself a Christian and then make a decision based on the Christian faith, based on his behavior. And so I just felt like I should say something. I did not expect to stir up the dust storm that this blog has stirred up.

  5. Haunted by the Reagan era: Past defeats still scare older Democratic leaders — but not the younger generation

None of it calmed Republicans, as younger lawmakers see it, so why not try something else? “The older members really cling to the idea that things are going to go ‘back to normal’ ” after Trump, Ocasio-Cortez told me. “For us, it’s never been normal, and before that the bipartisanship was s—ty anyway and gave us the War on Drugs, DOMA” — the Defense of Marriage Act, which barred federal recognition or benefits for same-sex couples — “and stripping the leg[islative] branch of everything.”

Still, Pelosi’s fear is that the energetic left will define the party in the eyes of a mythical center. “Own the center left, own the mainstream,” Pelosi has urged her caucus, advising Democrats to “not engage in some of the other exuberances that exist in our party.”
Otherwise, she warned, Democrats will win the White House by only a small margin next year, and Trump will contest the results. This fear is genuine but also necessary. In the absence of an affirmative agenda the party can agree on, the Democratic establishment needs something to inspire voters to show up, and fear of Republicans — and Trump — fits the bill.

    1. Hulk angry!

Angry Nancy Pelosi Slams Young House Progressives As Tiny Squad With No Support

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) has issued a surprisingly scathing attack on the gutsy crew of progressive freshmen women in the House of Representatives, dismissing them as a tiny squad who have a “public whatever,” but no backing in Congress.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) shot back on Twitter later saying that the “public whatever” is public sentiment.” She added: “Wielding the power to shift it is how we actually achieve meaningful change in this country.”

  6. #BeBest, boys #BeBest (Proud Boys getting their freak on edition)

Speaking of …. has anybody heard from Fluffer Fluffy this weekend???

Proud Boys Rally Rocked by Sex, Cocaine Allegations

[P]roud Boys have been charged with violent attacks against their political opponents and must adhere to a series of rules, including restrictions on how much they can masturbate.

Navarro’s withdrawal from Saturday’s rally comes after the event has already lost other speakers. Former Pizzagate conspiracy theory promoter Mike Cernovich had also been on the event’s bill, but said earlier this week that he wouldn’t attend. Fellow former Pizzagate advocate Jack Posobiec has also suggested he may not attend, despite being listed as a speaker on the rally’s website.

Complicating matters further, Navarro is still married to another woman, who he describes in a tweet as “my soon to be ex-wife.” In one tweet, Navarro chastised Lorraine, who says she dated Navarro for a few months earlier this year, for having a relationship with him while he was married.

“The helicopter blades are spinning,” a person off-camera warns as the clip ends, a reference to the Proud Boys’ fondness for Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet, whose regime executed its opponents by throwing them from helicopters.

    1. So they are only allowed to spill the seed once each month now. What happens during leap year? They make the supreme sacrifice and hold out for that extra day in February?

Has anyone mentioned this to their evangelical coalition partners?

As for Navarro tweeting about his soon-to-be-ex-wife, I could not help but think that this must be the next generation for how Rudy Giuliani informed Donna Hanover (his ex #2) that he wanted a divorce.

There was no tweeting in the '90's. Before telling the soon-to-be-ex, you had to announce it at a press conference, let her friends call and tell her, and then allow her to stage her own press conference minutes later.

      https://www.nytimes.com/2000/05/11/nyregion/mayor-s-seperation-overview-giuliani-his-wife-16-years-are-separating.html

      Those traditional family values!

      1. Just a bunch of Incels wearing MAGA hats?  Their leadership buried this report as Fake News? Nothing like long-debunked 16th-century ideas to ruin a 21st-century party!

The myth that abstaining from sex prior to sporting events will improve performance has little evidence to support it. In a 2000 study, researchers hypothesized the long-perpetuated myth may stem from the theory that sexual frustration leads to increased aggression. Some people believe the act of ejaculation draws testosterone — the hormone of both sexual desire and aggression — from the body, leading to poor concentration and fatigue. Scientists dismiss the idea that sex the night before competition has a tiring effect on the athlete, or that it could weaken the athlete's muscles.

      2. Newt Gingrich had a slightly different approach, and at least did it in person …

Asking while his then wife #1 was in the hospital. "Gingrich’s first wife, Jackie Battley, has said previously that the couple discussed their divorce while she was in the hospital in 1980."  In dispute is how much a possible divorce had been discussed earlier and whether Newt brought a list dividing up marital assets that he wanted the still "somewhat out of it" then-wife to sign.

Marianne, wife #2, has another charming story:

Marianne Gingrich said Newt asked her for an “ open marriage” so he could be with his then-mistress Callista without getting a divorce.

“And I just stared at him and he said, ‘Callista doesn’t care what I do,’” Marianne Gingrich said. “He wanted an open marriage and I refused.”

She said Newt asked for a divorce shortly after she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis.

Third times a charm wife Callista is now Ambassador to the Vatican.

  7. Six years ago last week a coup (of sorts) happened at the US Capitol: for the first time in modern history a flag made from industrial hemp fiber flew proudly on Independence Day – prompting this response from (then) DEA Adminstrator Leonhart:

Today 47 states and Washington, DC have legalized cannabis in one for or the other; 98.6% of the US population lives in states with some form (industrial, medical, adult use) of legalized cannabis access.  In Colorado we've surpassed a billion dollars in tax revenue from adult use sales, and our Governor has committed to making Colorado the top hemp state in the nation, bringing a new wave of young farmers, entrepreneurs and economic activity.

(Then Congressman) Polis was the tip of this spear; without him the underpinnings of this new industry built upon the House language in the 2014 wouldn't have happened.  We also owe a great deal to Senator Michael Bennet, who assured the inclusion of the language in the December, 2013 conference language. It was a Colorado team effort.

  8. Michael Bennet grows a spine, and finds his voice, finally saying out loud what has been obvious for the last 3 years.

“We don't need a president who doesn’t believe in the rule of law. We don't need a president who doesn't believe in freedom of the press. We don't need a president who doesn't believe in the independence of the judiciary. We don't need a president who believes he’s above the law, that he can do by executive order what Congress doesn’t do.”

“What amazes me is the stuff that he does — whether it's coddling a dictator in North Korea, or laughing with Putin about Russia’s attacks on our democracy — that’s stuff that if Barack Obama did one of it, he would have been indicted 24 hours a day on Fox News, and President Trump is applauded,” Bennet said.

  9. Meghan Rapinoe for president!  She'll be 35 next August, so we can drop that old crock Pete Buttigieg to veep.  It would be the first all LG ticket.
