Democratic Presidential Debate 1, Night 1 Open Thread

  • by: Colorado Pols

UPDATE: We just noticed this, so apologies if we’re late to the party. One of these men is Democratic Presidential candidate John Delaney. The other is former President Gerald Ford.

It’s okay if you’re kinda creeped out by this. We are, too.

    1. He's kind of an officious a-hole – an uber rich Maryland congressman who is self-funding his campaign. I say he's officious because I'm watching him interrupt other candidates constantly, trying so hard to position himself as a moderate alternative to Warren, et al.  Trying to get his money's worth of air time.

He also reminds me of some other sitcom star – can't remember who right now.

    1. Maybe the questions weren't honest enough to answer.  Chuck Clod was a smug asshole trying out "gotcha" questions at every chance.  The one bitchy woman who tried to get O'Rourke to say he would raise taxes on the rich to 70% was peeved when he replied with an answer that said that he wanted a tax code that was fair to all and that people who own 90% of the wealth and assets  in this country should contribute their fair share.  I hate bullshit people like you who think "questions" are sacrosanct and anyone who doesn't walk into the traps laid by the questioner are the bad guys.  The carbon tax and "exorbitant"  cost of saving all life on this planet questions were also bullshit.  I thought the candidates were informed and provided lots of specific proposals and information.  If you didn't like their replies, too bad.

      1. Questions can be bullshit or gotcha. On the flip side, without pushing for specifics then the candidates can all just speak in generalities that let them be in favor of everything without explaining what specifically they'll try to do.

  1. Biggest applause so far on national security questions: Most said China, climate change, Russia are biggest threats to our national security. Bill DeBlasio said Donald Trump is the biggest threat. And the crowd went wild.

    1. Inslee was the first to identify Trump as the greatest threat.  And yes, the crowd went wild.  I had thought he would say climate change.  But face it, four more years of Trump and climate change — and many other things — will be irreversible.

      1. No, but $rump shouldn't be the big ugly orange baboon in the room that everyone tiptoes around and pretends not to see, either. People are genuinely and justifiably worried about what his @residency is doing to our country.

    1. Are you referring to the moment Twitler shared ‘BORING!!!!’ while the candidates were discussing the father-daughter drowning?

  2. First off while I think it started off as candidates making speeches instead of answers, and often on very different topics, it then got good. And then really good. They challenged each other, they talked through policy, and they kept it professional and a discussion of issues. I'm really proud of the debate.

    Winners

Biggest winner is by far Castro. Before the debate he was in the 1% with everyone figuring he's toast. He's now a contender.

Next is Warren. She entered as someone of clear presidential caliber and in the debate she showed that is well deserved. Did she dominate every minute? No. That would be impossible with 10 candidates. But she validated her leading position.

Booker is the last big winner. He was in so many discussions and in each came across as worthy of being president. I don't know if he improved his standing (strong second tier), but he definitely maintained his standing.

    Losers

Biggest by far is O'Rourke. He seemed clueless and in over his head at times. Definitely not presidential caliber. He's got good enough standing at present that this won't kill his campaign, but if in the next debate the same thing happens, then it's over for him.

Klobuchar under performed. She came across clearly as smart, knowledgeable, and I think would make a good president. And she had some great zingers. But she never soared. This has been her problem all along and it didn't change.

Gabbard basically wasn't there. She only lit up on defense issues. Her campaign is over. Too bad, she's really smart and knows defense well. Maybe she'll become Secretary of Defense.

Delaney clearly didn't belong on the stage with the others.

Inslee, Ryan, de Blasio – None of them had a moment. They all had an occasional contribution, but none did anything to move them out of the 1% category.

    1. O'Rourke is an empty suit, and showed it in spades last night. Unfortunately, being an empty suit isn't much of a detriment in contemporary America, so O'Rourke's campaign will trundle on.

Gabbard, a racist sociopath, did about as expected. The best possible outcome of her campaign would be the emergence of a quality Dem primary challenger for her House seat.

Based on negative comments from Minnesota progressives I know, I wasn't expecting much of anything from Klobuchar. She overperformed in my eyes, but that's primarily the result of low initial expectations.

Saw enough from Warren that I'll likely send her campaign more money.

  3. David, I think that to a great extent, that's what we saw last night: the top contenders for Cabinet posts. Most of them have one area they shine in and that's all they need to be Secretary of ______.

      1. Isn't the Daily Mail the fascist rag that is pushing Boris Johnson to pull his own brand of Trumpshit leading to the break up the UK into it's constituent territories?

    1. Yes, the right wing site Daily Mail, based on the Drudge Report, is such an unbiased source. Not.

I kind of liked Tulsi Gabbard for various reasons – but her clear anti-Muslim bias worries me. Of course, for you, that would be a feature, not a bug.

  4. Keep an open mind about Tulsi. At least she knows the difference between concentration camps and detention facilities. She’s a woman so you must support her over the white, brown and black men. It’s required Leftist doctrine.
