What you can do to fight back this week (June 24)

Last week, Sen. Cory Gardner failed Colorado again.

Sen. Gardner sits on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. Last week, the entire U.S. Senate voted to rebuke President Donald Trump over his handling of relations with Saudi Arabia during the controversial war in Yemen and the killing of a Washington Post journalist—all subjects Gardner has paid lip service to caring about.

Last Thursday, Republicans and Democrats joined together to tell President Trump enough is enough. [1] Cory Gardner wasn’t among them. Once again, Gardner stood with Trump over fundamental American values. Over Colorado values. We know Trump doesn’t value freedom of the press, or even care about civilians dying in Yemen, but Cory Gardner promised Colorado he would be “a different kind of Republican.”

First order of business this week: call Sen. Gardner at (202) 224-5941 and let him know his vote to protect Saudi Arabia was a big mistake that matters to Colorado. It’s another reminder that 2020 is coming fast, and Sen. Gardner has much to be held accountable for.

Once that’s done, don’t miss these great opportunities to advance our shared progressive values for the week of June 24:

Prisoners of Politics: Breaking the Cycle of Mass Incarceration

America’s criminal justice system reflects irrational fears stoked by politicians seeking to win election. Pointing to specific policies that are morally problematic and have failed to end the cycle of recidivism, Rachel Barkow argues that reform guided by evidence, not politics and emotions, will reduce crime and reverse mass incarceration. Rachel Elise Barkow is the Segal Family Professor of Regulatory Law and Policy and the Faculty Director of the Center on the Administration of Criminal Law at New York University. She served as a law clerk to Judge Laurence H. Silberman on the District of Columbia Circuit and Justice Antonin Scalia on the U.S. Supreme Court.
