Defense vs. Offense

  • by: Colorado Pols

We were pondering this idea as far back as last July, and it looks like it may become a reality in Colorado. The Rocky Mountain News has an interesting article about how Republicans may be forced to play more defense than offense in 2006 because of President’s Bush’s plummeting approval ratings and general disapproval with congressional incumbents:

With President Bush’s approval ratings stuck in a ditch, national Republicans are starting to get scared about clinging to their majority in the House. They’re playing defense, not offense, and that means putting most of their money into fortifying the districts they already hold.

Even [Scott] Tipton, who’s trying to unseat first-term Democratic Rep. John Salazar, said he knows he can’t bank on getting the same multimillion-dollar infusion that the National Republican Congressional Committee provided Republican Greg Walcher in 2004.

“We assess campaigns and we try to push our guys over the finish line,” NRCC spokesman Jonathan Collegio says. But Collegio points out again and again, “The NRCC is an incumbent-retention committee, and it’s the highest priority to protect incumbent Republicans.”

Does that mean Tipton is on his own? The NRCC won’t discuss its specific strategies, but for now at least, that’s the way analysts like Amy Walter of the Cook Political Report interpret it.

“I really do think Democrats get to play almost exclusively on offense, and Republicans are playing almost exclusively on defense,” Walter said. “It means few Democratic incumbents are going to find themselves targeted.”

In any other year, Tipton would be the kind of candidate who might get more backing from the people who control the Republican purse strings.

  1. What took you so long? The GOP has been on defense since April 2005 when the Terry Schiavo case so angered independents and conservatives who don’t agree with Bush’s social issues agenda that they gave up on him.

Republicans are on defense because the president is wrong on:

    1. Social issues.
    2. Illegal immigration and amnesty.
    3. Separation of church and state.
    4. Governmental secrecy and persecuting reporters who are just doing their jobs.
    5. Promoting expensive ethanol over the wishes of wiser consumers and at the behest of farm state politicians.
    6. Failure to win the Iraq war quickly.
    7. Runaway spending with no vetoes.
    8. Elitist top down, huge government policies that show how much contempt he holds for Americans.
    9. Disrespect for Congress, which, these days, deserves no respect.

  2. In regards to #5:  Expensive compared to what?  $70 crude? $100 crude? Finite oil reserves controlled by middle eastern regimes who want to wipe us off the face of the planet?  The $4/gallon hidden cost of gasoline (whose costs we socialize to keep the routes from the Middle East to our ports safe, compliments of the US Navy?) The environmental costs of burning fossil fuels?

  3. On #7, it’s hard for him to justify vetoing spending bills when, according to him, Congress has pretty much given him what he asked for in his budget requests.  You want a more responsible budget, put the Democrats in control of Congress; worst case, they show that they’re the Socialists y’all accuse them of being, and the President remembers where his veto pen is to counter them…

On #5, since when has the President given a flying you-know-what about Ethanol?  He’s too involved in promoting Hydrogen Fuel Cell cars which are likely a decade out – i.e. when he isn’t in office any more.  Wise consumers should be interested in a broad-based investment in new energy technologies that combined will lead us out of the fossil fuel era.

  4. As to the Defense vs. Offense thing itself, I have to agree with A. Skeptic – the Republicans have put themselves in a position where they’ve pissed off almost every part of their constituency in one way or another.  They’re tearing apart our military while refusing to face the reasons why we’re in a war we didn’t need to be in; they’ve crossed over the boundaries of seperation of Church and State but at the same time they can’t (aka don’t really want to) seem to pass legislation resolving the Fundamentalists’ key issues; they’re re-introducing the Gilded Age while at the same time bankrupting the country with fiscal mis-management; crying States’ Rights while legislating State issues at the Federal level…

In other words, they’re trying to have it Both Ways on every issue under the Sun, in the worst possible way they could attempt to have it Both Ways.  It’s not like they’re flip-flopping on the facts; no, they’re taking the extremes of the pendulum swing and implementing both ends…

  5. Maybe we should start listing the “good things” that the Bush Administration has done over the past two terms.  Indeed, what things are “good” that we can now place on the other side of the pendulum?

  6. I was listening to Air America about the recent murders by our troops in Iraq.  It was horrible to listen to the aftermath, a SIX year old child who witnessed the murder of his parents, his little brother and sister, and grandparents (who were sitting in a wheelchair) mowed down right in front of his eyes.  The outrage of this SIX year old child for the deaths of his family, stated how “God” will have his revenge against US.

    Indeed, what have we done?

NOTE: This is how a terrorist is born.  This is what is wrong with what we are doing in Iraq.  We are literally birthing hundreds if not thousands of new terrorists each and every day in that country … all because of our lies and the %^$#%^&*(*&^$#@ Bush Administration.

  7. I was listening to Air America ….

Well then, your problem is obvious.

What “murders” are you talking about?  As of this morning, the investigation is still in progress.  For you to claim in a public forum that these are “murders” leaves me to conclude that you are one gullible fool.

Oh, I see – you heard it on Air(head) America, so it must be true.

You’re to be pitied.  And I would pity you, but for the fact that it appears to be willful stupidity on your part.

  8. Remarkable —

Air America is not the only station playing the audio.  I have also watched the video.  Are you suggesting that the video was fabricated?  Are you suggesting that Congressman John Murtha (a decorated military veteran) was inncorrect in his assertion yesterday on CNN?  He stated that our US government has intentionally tried to cover-up the “MURDERS” … since it happened over 6 months ago.  I have heard the audio and video for myself …

I STAND IN AGREEMENT WITH SENATOR BIDEN, CONGRESSMAN JOHN MURTHA and others, who are wanting answers on how high the cover-up IS.

  9. Gee thanks for that little emotional outburst Patroit. No use putting up a logical argument when you can talk about birthing terrorists and violence around children.

When you’re done sobbing through your tears about your evil country (that incidentally hasn’t seemed to have hunted you down and given you a 9mm headache for your seditious writings, unlike other evil governments I could think of), why don’t you contribute something useful to the discussion.

  10. Iron Mike —

Emotional outburst?  Just because I agree with what other Senators or Congressman believe, does not suggest anything other than my desire for the “truth”.

    Are you threatening me?

  11. Patriot, take your bull**** elsewhere.

DemocraticUnderground is far more suitable for you.  The MO over this is right up your alley.

  12. Iron Mike —

I strongly suggest that you make a retraction of your statement against me.  I don’t want to make a phone call to the Feds.

  13. Give yourself and your over-inflated ego a rest, Patriot.  No one has threatened you in the least.

The only retraction that’s necessary is your ‘murder’ BS.

  14. There are countless numbers of anti-war zealots on the American Left rooting for failure. They believe the worst about the troops. They’ve blindly embraced frauds who’ve lied about their military service and lied about wartime atrocities. They’ve allied themselves with socialist kooks and coddled murderous dictators. They are looking for any excuse to pull out, abandon military operations and reconstruction, and impeach the president.

They insist on giving suspected foreign terrorists more benefit of the doubt than our own men and women in uniform. And that, I know, I am not willing to do.

    — Michelle Malkin, May 31, 2006

from:  ‘The truth about Haditha’  http://townhall.com/opinion/columns/michellemalkin/2006/05/31/199233.html

What Ms. Malkin said above goes double for me.

  15. Like it or not, the killings in Haditha are being investigated and from all accounts, military investigators are suggesting a massacre of civilians.

From CNN, “Military investigators strongly suspect that a small number of Marines snapped after one of their own was killed by a roadside bomb November 19 in Haditha, a city on the Euphrates River northwest of Baghdad, and went on a rampage, sources told CNN.”

    http://www.cnn.com/2006/WORLD/meast/05/31/haditha/index.html

On another note altogether, Patriot, Iron Mike didn’t threaten you. He insulted you. Surely you can tell the difference? Your “I don’t want to make a phone call to the Feds”–now that would be considered a threat. (A baseless one, no doubt, but a threat, nevertheless.)

Whatever happened to your love of free speech?

  16. Middle —

He should apologize.  If you were in my shoes, you would expect the same.  Rather than suggest using weapons against me for my opinions and my right to disagree with the course of the Bush Administration, he could reduce his rhetoric (if that was what his comment was about using a 9mm) and refrain from personal attacks for my right of freedom of speech … that NEVER includes a threat against my right of providing “opinion.”

  17. I would not expect the same because you are blowing a comment out of proportion, so please speak only for yourself.

He did not threaten you–reread the post. He was making the case that in this country you have the right to say whatever you like without fear of being murdered for it.

  18. Remarkable,

Failed states create chaos, hence more terrorism.  Bush’s experiment in Iraq has caused a failure in the acceptance of Democratic beliefs in the middle east, fueling fundamentalist to take a totalitarian charge.  War-lords are taking back Afgahnistan and Iraq.  This has nothing to do with supporting our troops in combat. No-one should have to defend that.

I do not only believe the worst in our “leaders of this war,” especially since the founding principle of America is distrust, but I believe the Bush Administration has failed.  No Real Coaltion.  No real recontruction is taking place.  No exit plan exists.  Our troops have not failed us.  Our leadership has.  Anti-war is not anti-military.  Stop insinuating.

  19. Iron Mike’s and Remarkable’s head-in-the-sand reaction to things like civilian massacre’s is exactly why the repubs are now playing defence.  You can not solve a problem (ie. govern) if you refuse to acknowlege that one even exists.  A few examples of republican denial…Katrina, Iraq’s insurgancy, the national debt, global warming, healthcare costs,………..

IMO…Michelle Malkin is a radical rightwing shrill who is little more than Ann Coulter light.  There is no arguement her the quote above, only childish name calling and outlandish generalizations.  It seems like this has become the last strategy of a broken ideology now playing DEFENSE.

  20. Attacking the messenger.  Congrats.

Calling anyone a murderer – especially our troops and Marines who are in harms’ way while the investigation is still ongoing is offensive, and in no way is supportive of our troops.  You can spew your left-wing, hope-America-loses pablum all you want.

    Congrats again.

  21. Remarkable —

First, stating … “that incidentally hasn’t seemed to have hunted you down and given you a 9mm headache for your seditious writings, unlike other evil governments I could think of …” is suggestive.  It suggests that an answer to those who voice their opinions, like me, are subject to violence of a gun.  He needs to retract his comment … otherwise, it suggests the answer for my right of free speech is solved through violence and hatred.  This reminds me of so many within the Republican viewpoint, that they enjoy the violence, the killing, the war in Iraq.

Second, I’m restating the news.  If you would listen more closely to the news, then you would understand that the media (FOX as well), is calling it “murder” by our troops.  I have only brought forward the issue to this forum.

  22. You’re restating unfounded and unsubstantiated BS.  Murtha may as well be a reporter for Al Jazeera.  No sense letting the investigation come to its completion now, is there?

A better moniker for you would be “Parrot”, since you enjoy the rantings of the clowns at Air(head) America.

You’re a offensive fool.  You’ve provided plenty of evidence for that.

  23. Oh for crying out loud Patroit, I didn’t threaten you.

The term “9mm Headache” is a euphemism from the Cold War… It was how the KGB referred to the execution of a political prisoner when the crime did not warrant capitol punishment under the Soviet Constitution.

I used it as an example of how good things still are in our fair nation. Even though you are here crying about the injustices in Iraq, no one from the the Government has taken you out back and shot you, which incidentally, is still what you would get in many other nations of the world for some of the words you have written on this blog. Although I’m pretty sure Saddam would have handed you over to his sons so they could feed you to their pet lions.

By the way, I do not now, nor have I ever owned a lion… Although my neighbor does have a tom cat named Tigger that has eradicated most of the feral rabbits in the area. So if you must feel compelled to call the Feds on me and argue that I threatened to have you attacked by a great cat… Well, they might not be too receptive when they come around and check out Tigger.

  24. Come on all you Republicans and chant with me! (because they are your team right or wrong, good or bad, even corrupt!)

DEFENSE (clap clap) DEFENSE……DEFENSE (clap clap) DEFENSE……DEFENSE (clap clap) DEFENSE……DEFENSE (clap clap) DEFENSE……DEFENSE (clap clap) DEFENSE……

  25. Murtha’s a political hack and a fool. Enough said.

Nobody’s listed the Dems’ talking points:

    1. Nancy Pelosi.
    2. Charlie Rangle.
    3. Impeach Bush.
    4. Dick Durbin.
    5. Unionize the world; put government unions in charge of the government by electing their left-wing supporters.
    6. Socialize medicine.
    7. Retreat from the world, close the ports.
    8. Raise taxes, create more unemployment, increase welfare payments to the unemployed.
    9. Boost the excise tax on gasohol to $10, reduce mileage by 30 percent, return to the horse and buggy.
    10. Victimize America. Everyone’s a victim who can’t get an $8 million book contract. Woo them. Win them and wimper with them and your power will be everlasting.

  26. To Remarkable and Another skeptic.
You both called Rep. Murtha a “fool”. Remarkable you wrote that Mr. Murtha “may as well be a reporter for Al Jazeera”. You may or may not be familar with something Jesus said about calling people fools. Basically he said, don’t do that. Mr. Murtha is not here to defend himself and I certainly am not worthy to do that. So just let me say, you are both poopy heads.

  27. So, Nancy Pelosi, Charlie Rangle and Dick Durbin are just talking points?  That’s funny, I thought they were elected representatives of the people.

  28. I didn’t think I… Aw screw it. Whatever.

Next time you’re in the neighborhood Patroit you better watch out… I’ll put Tigger on you tough guy.

We’ll see how smug you are when you hav eight pounds of ill tempered orange feline chewing his way through your Achilles tendon.

  29. I’m still waiting for Patriot to apologize for threatening to call the Feds–unless I’m equally slow these days, that was actually a threat, I do believe.

  30. Making an apology when you’re wrong is not a weakness.  It’s a sign of some degree of moral courage.

Which is why you’ll never hear liberals apologize.

  31. Hey, easy now, Quixote. I’m a liberal and when I’m wrong, I have no problem apologizing. I don’t think it has anything to do with being a liberal so much as it has to do with being a grown-up.

  32. Ooh!  Vitriolic name-calling!  Ah, how I’ve missed it.

Patriot, you were IMHO mis-reading the post.

Reliable and others: the Marines have already paid compensation to the relatives of the Haditha victims; the initial investigation found reason to doubt the “official” story of the soldiers that the victims were killed by an IED; and Murtha has long been a supporter of the uniformed military whose military-sourced information I would trust long before I trusted Malkin’s fact-free screeching.  (And, yes, it was fact-free; there wasn’t a single logical rebuttal point in the whole quote…)

  33. That’s nothing Phoenix… Wait till you see the pictures of Tigger taking it to Patroit. Don’t let the children see them though… Could be disturbing.

  34. Another Skeptic – who needs talking points? The dems apparently are giving the reps enough rope to hang themselves.

If they decide to come up with something, it probably won’t be until late in the campaign. If I recall correctly the Contract With America was only rolled out 3 or 4 weeks prior to 1994’s election day.

  35. MFD is correct; the Contract On America (provisions suspended upon acceptance) was a relatively last-minute campaign tactic.  The DNC has apparently been in possession of a completed plan since early this year, but they seem to be releasing only tantalizing bits, and very few of those.  My guess is that they’re co-ordinating behind the scenes to get all the Dems on-message after the Summer’s over – as the Bushies would say, you don’t introduce new product in the Summer…

  36. Patriot, I have seen the others give you ample chances to read and re-read the posts presented about the reference to the 9mm.  As everyone but you has seen, there was never a threat made my Iron Mike, nor was there ever an apology.  Iron Mike simply made a point in the first post (a very well thought out point at that) and reiterated his point in the second post.  The fact that you still could not read critically and understand the argument being made by Iron Mike has left me no other option than to assume you have no credability, no matter how many political pundents you quote or how many 4 syllabul words you use.  The end

  37. Wow, they’ve cut Scott Tipton loose.  So the Colo. Dems worst case scenario is three U.S. House seats, but in all likelihood there will four (or more) come January.  YEAH HA!  Now we just gotta hold the General Assembly while “Both Ways” and “Marky Boy” mutually destroy one another…….Colorado is turning from purple to blue!

  38. MyPetGoat, I heard Scott Tipton speak, and he is very electable if he keeps campaigning hard. I would not get too overexcited about elections outcomes yet.

  39. Phoenix Rising —

Making a statement that includes a “9mm headache” is typical of those who are x-military, government or those attempting to make a statement.  It is similiar to those “creeps” who used such talk with Columbine.  Making the statement of a “9mm headache” is about the damage that a 9mm would do as a rupture of the artery from the heart, its size, when compared to other handguns, (bleeding out) like a 45.  I don’t like such talk and a damn will ask for an apology … and an explanation.

  40. It is good that you didn’t include a repeated Columbine slogun.  Thank you for your level of respect and Christian concern for my rights to protect democracy against the Bush administration — without a threatening remark again.  I appreciate it.  *flowers*

  41. Iron Mike —

“This will soon pass Iron Mike … eventually, you will accept the model of DEMOCRACY, just as the rest of the country IS doing … *wink*

  42. Scott Tipton is intelligent, well-spoken, and fully capable of independent thinking.

That’s why the Trailhead Group will secretly oppose him – he won’t become just another one of their  slaves, voting whatever way they want in exchange for campaign funding.
