GOP Chair Bob Martinez finally spoke up about his decision to publicly call on Marc Holtzman to?give?up?his gubernatorial campaign, though it didn’t make him sound any better. From The Denver Post:
Martinez acknowledged that party chairmen rarely insert themselves publicly into primary debates but said that after the state assembly Saturday, all he saw was “blackness.”
“I just looked at the future if things stayed like this and was struck by the blackness,” he said. “I saw a window where I could act – between the assembly and Marc filing his petition. He wouldn’t listen to me. I thought if I went public, he would listen to others.”
Starting today, Martinez said, he won’t make negative comments about Holtzman.
“Once he files as a Republican candidate, I shut up,” he said. “You can’t speak ill of another Republican candidate.”
Umm…you’re?a little too late there, Bob.

Bob Martinez already stepped out of bounds. Now every Republican knows where he lies and the speculation will be there that he will do everything to help Both Ways Bob to win the primary. I hope in the end. BM will eat Crow!
Go Holtzman!
So Bob, “You can’t speak ill of another Republican candidate.”
Is that before a Republican gets on the ballot or should that be all the time? Seems to me, the GOP quotes Reagan; but then becomes hypocrites during the primary.
Who has spoken ill of Felow Republicans? Let’s see if we can name them. I’ll start the list…
1) Bob Martinez
So B.M. is seeing blackness and weirdness. Pat Robertson speaks in tongues, while Charlie Duke and “W” hear voices which tell them what to do. What kind of serious drugs are these Republicans getting their hands on?
As a fellow convention attender pointed out. Watching the actions of Martinez and the Trailhead lackeys was like watching the curtain pulled back and revealing OZ (aka O.Z.P.I.N.H.E.A.D.) The backroom leaders have been exposed and I think that many of us are disappointed at the revelation. In the end, I expect that most of us will get over the shock and make the right decision but it will never be the same.
Gosh, someone daring to challenge the candidate anointed in advance by The Powers That Be.
The horror! The horror!
He sees ” blackness?”
Isn’t that a rather racist comment?
BM sees blackness? That’s a great way to kick of the election season for the Republicans. Way to go Bob, why don’t you resign?
Sometimes you have to go out of bounds to do what’s best for the party. That’s courage.
I see dead people – oh, that’s just MH’s chances in the primary.
BM sees blackness. Hey Bob, was that before or after the Beauprez supporters asked you to interupt Holtzman during his speech. bet you idiots didn’t count on Holtzman being armed with a timer now did ya?
Sorry, but the curtain was dark. Guess you heard voices also.
Martinez dropped a big BM into the political punch bowl. No way should the party chairman be the center of attention in the Governor race right now.
>>>>Sometimes you have to go out of bounds to do what’s best for the party. That’s courage.
Actually, in this case, it’s rather stupid.
There’s nothing courageous about just doing what your bosses in the Trailhead Group tell you to do.
If he told Coors, Owens, Benson, et. al., to get bent, now THAT would show some courage.
But as it is, he’s just a toadie.
I would wager it’s one of the only times a Republican party chair (especially in Colorado, with our dearth of African-Americans) ever looks anywhere and sees blackness.
>>>I would wager it’s one of the only times a Republican party chair (especially in Colorado, with our dearth of African-Americans) ever looks anywhere and sees blackness.
Now that’s not really fair. After all, the Trailhead Group has ensured that the Party has Ed Token Jones…..whether it wants him or not.
Has everyone seen who signed the letter from the legislators asking Holtzman to step aside? There are more moderate and liberal Republicans on this list then Conservatives. Some, of which, ‘speak ill of Republicans” all the time!

That’s a hit list if there ever was one.
Ed Jones fills the big void left in the GOP’s outreach program by the (forced) retirement of former Lt. Gov. Joe Rogers.
I hope those who signed the letter; end up on the sidelines come election day.
I’m disappointed at the names on that list. I realize they want to win in November, but they should do that by working for and donating to their favorite candidate. Trying to publicly oust a Republican candidate is not cool.
The GOP’s outreach program consists entirely of four or five people in the Trailhead Group desperately trying to cover up the fact that Jones is a repeat criminal offender who sits around in bars watching cocaine deals go down and laughing at it. (For any who don’t believe that, see the archives of the Colorado Springs Independent).
Lauren:
I hope they donate to their favorite candidate – since that might cause some problems there too. But I would not have expected any El Paso Republican (and I note that almost all our incumbents and candidates lined up like good little boys and girls) to cross the leadership, after all, we did such a fine job of hosting the assembly.
Well, the popcorn was tasty.
I don’t blame El Paso for the long wait, it looks like in an effort to avoid another voting fiasco, the State Party created enough rules to create a new fiasco. “The best laid plans of mice and men…”
in this case, mice like bm and the rest of the state party. it’ll be entertaining to finish watching them squirm in the traps they’ve ensnared themselvs in. (did you enjoy the call from the rnc, guys? I heard it was oh so pleasant. looks like strike two for you guys.)
Clarity,
Did you real call some of those on the hit list “liberal republicans?”
That’s a joke if there ever was on this blog. It’s about as funny as Holtzman calling Governor Owen a liberal.
Even better, it’s just like the El Paso County Commissioners calling Doug Bruce a liberal for trying to stop the prayer from being said at meetings!
Bob Martinez sees blackness. Everyone else see cluelessness.
Martinez is now backpedaling from his imprudent endorsement, but it’s too late. He has very publicly opposed a candidate in the primary, in clear violation of the party bylaws. There is simply no way to take it back, or to have even an appearance of impartiality.
Bob Martinez should resign.
>>>Did you real call some of those on the hit list “liberal republicans?”
I think it would be fair to call Mark Larson a liberal republican.
And Token Jones only pretends to be moderate-to-conservative.
Bob Frogface Gardner blows whichever way he can gain the most personal advantage, even if that means acting completely like a democrat. For example, a few years ago he actually worked against four Republicans who were running for City Council in Colorado Springs because he was told to by some of those now in the Trailhead Group.
First off, did you just call Jones, “token?” Showing your true colors are you?
And, Jones is not liberal by any means. The man wants to do away with public schools, creating a tiered system of division…much like separate but equal.
BINGO!!
At least quixote got it right!
Same Song needs to get a new song!
I seem to recall a few weeks ago, BM and State Party were making fundraising calls on Bob Beauprez’s behalf via a certain telemarketing firm the name of which I shall not mention. When they were called out, all of the BB shills and state party hacks had an absolute fit and called the thing an isolated incident and said that Holtzman was being crazy and paranoid to EVER imagine the state party would take sides in the primary.
The State Party has taken sides in this from the very beginning, and it’s time for Bob Martinez to leave gracefully.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>First off, did you just call Jones, “token?” Showing your true colors are you?
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>And, Jones is not liberal by any means. The man wants to do away with public schools, creating a tiered system of division…much like separate but equal.
First off, I would have to agree with quixote that Jones is nothing more than a token. It’s not racist, as you seem to be implying, to tell the truth about why he is in office.
And as much as the man is completely and thoroughly dispicable, I don’t believe he’s ever called for an abolition of the public schools.
Chairman Martinez…
Although I am supporting your man Beauprez – you should resign today! You are an embarassment to the Republican Party. Take your silly lawyers Zacham and Ryan Call and the rest of the party hacks and leave before you do any more damage to our Republican party.
As a delegate, I saw an old man being wheeled by in an office chair clutching his heart…
I saw upset people leaving and shouting that they were going to leave the party – not just the building.
FEMA did a better job of evacuating New Orleans after Katrina then you (and your want to be big shot lawyers Zacham et al) did running an assembly. I was concerned for they many old people who were close to passing out while they stood in line for hours just to get a ballot.
It was surreal… and I had to remind myself that I was not at the Super dome in New Orleans waiting to be lifted by chopper.
There is no doubt that the Republicans under your failed leadership are going to lose more Senate seats and the Governorship under your watch. This will be your legacy.
While the ship sinks under your command you and your attorneys are only arraning the chairs on deck of the Titanic.
Why don’t you just resign today and allow somebody – anybody with a modicum of brains and organizational skills run this party.
PS Your letter you sent out stating what a pathetic job you and your hacks did running the assembly has Ted Halaby listed at the bottom of the stationary as the chair of the party.
RESIGN NOW!!! And take Zacham – Call and the rest with you.
Bob Martinez violated the party bylaws on neutrality. The bylaws state that, “No candidate for any designation or nomination for public office shall be endorsed, supported, or opposed by the CRC acting as an entity or by it’s officers or committees, before the Primary, unless such candidate is unopposed in the primary.” The primary is in August. This is May. May is before August.
Bob Martinez’s absurd claim that there was some “window” after the assembly during which he was free to ignore the rules is self-serving, gratuitous, and insulting.
The truth is that the assembly is only one of many pathways – all equally legal and valid – by which candidates can enter the primary. The assembly is neither the final nor the deciding event. A candidate cannot be considered “unopposed” until all deadlines have passed to enter the primary. That was clearly not the case.
Party chairmen should not strive to be the center of media attention. Instead, they should do their work quietly and leave the media spotlight to the candidates.
Bob Martinez’s mouth is his own worst enemy. He spouts to the media, ignoring the rules. Instead of apologizing, he spouts absurd legalisms. And, he sounds like a kook by further spouting about the descending “blackness.” This clown needs to go. Soon.
No wonder Sunbarger quit. I’d get out too if my job was to explain the inexplicable.
Get our boys out! Get them out, now! We gotta bring our boys home!
Ed Jones refers to teachers as socialists. He also urges all parents to get their kids out of public schools and into home-schooling.
Jones is the ultimate token, the irony is that he is opposed to all the things that helped him get where he is. He has abused the system no end, but he opposes affirmative action, he votes against any bill that does good for those who can’t help themselves and voted against the school finance bill SIX times!
He is an unadulturated A@$hole.
Indeed.
And don’t forget that he sits around in bars during the workday, when he was SUPPOSED tp be performing his duties as county commissioner, drinking himself into a stupor and watching cocaine deals and laughing at it. (That’s called misprison of felony, and is a federal crime).
But whenever he breaks the law, he does so with almost total impunity, because he is a black elected official and a necessary token in the Republican Party. John Suthers and Jeanne Smith, both former El Paso County DAs and now the AG and…..chief deputy AG, I think?…..gave him multiple keep-out-of-jail-free cards when he was driving without license, without registration, without insurance. Never mind that he hit a guy and seriously injured him. Never mind that the rest of us would be facing jailtime for what Jones did.
He’s is not only an unadulturated A@$hole, he’s also thoroughly corrupt, and his presence corrupts others around him as they desperately strive to prove that they’re not racist….”see, I supported Ed Jones, a black man…”
And, of course, Bob Gardner is his close political ally….was his campaign manager and is just as corrupt, if not worse. Gardner actually campaigned AGAINST Republicans running for office because their Mastters in the development business told him to. And, of course, he all but bankrupted the El Paso Rep. Party when he was party chair, and had a totally disasterous County Assembly at the old airport that drove a number of people away form the party.
And they are both BB supporters, calling on Holtzman to quit….what does that tell you about the pro-Beauprez crowd?
“Birds of a feather stick together.:”
Someone was asking in another thread how it was known that certain El Paso Republicans were corrupt?
There you go.
Good points, RE: Ed Jones and Socrates.
I find it hard to believe that John Suthers would give anyone a “get out of jail free card”.
I find it hard to believe that anyone with multiple failure to license, failure to register, failure to insure, who was involved in a vehicle accident with serious injuries under all those conditions wouldn’t spend any time in jail.
But that’s the truth about Token Jones, sad to say. Token Jones got token punishment.
And why was he NEVER charged with misprison of felony? Because he was a black Republican County Commissioner, Jeanne Smith chose not to charge him with the obvious and blatant crime.
With the exception of that last conclusion, all of this is well-known, and has been reported in the media. It’s all just plain fact.
Token Jones is about as qualified to be in office as Spongebob Squarepants is to be a NASA astronaut.
There are a couple of definition of “misprision”. That being said, it is my understanding that misprision is rarely used as a charge against anyone. Socrates, you say that all of this is well known and has been reported in the media. What media is that?
Even though Colorado has a seatbelt law – the Mesa DA didn’t get into any trouble when his son was thrown from his car in an accident. Pete Hautzinger’s son was not wearing a seat belt.
Socrates, laws only apply to those who are not a part of the fortunate ruling class. Get used to it.
You can find the entire story in the archives of both the Independent and the Gazette, if you bother to look.
And there are a number of people in federal prison right now having been convicted of that charge in connection with drug distribution. You can look that up for yourself, too.
And, by the way, why is it that you can’t be bothered to do your own research? You know, a simple little thing like doing a google search?

18 U.S.C. Section 4 – Misprison of Felony
This statute covers the failure to report a felony. Requires anyone who has knowledge of the actual commission of a felony cognizable by a United States court to report it to any judge or other person in civil or military authority.
Socrates, lest you consider me lazy, I did try looking into the CSI archives the other day, and it was down. I do have other responsibilities, but thank you for the references.
Best,
RkyMtnRep
RkyMtnRep,
You are almost as full of it as Jones himself. Have you listened to the audio posted by “Pompelius”?
While the term “misprison” may be a little unfamiliar, I think we all know that if you witness a crime and fail to report it, that in itself is a crime. Remember the last episode of Seinfeld?
And you’d better believe that the feds love to toss people in jail for drug crimes, why do you think the U.S. Prison population has quadrupled since 1980. . .
Got around to reading the CSI article, it certainly is unflattering for Jones.
“unflattering” is a bit of an understatement.
Like calling the Grand Canyon a “little hole in the ground.”
And please note that nothing factual in that Independent article has ever been refuted by Jones. During his last campaign, he wouldn’t appear at any candidate forums, wouldn’t talk to the press, was hiding from everyone while what became the Trailhead Group ran his campaign and created a completely bogus image for him.
It’s a good bet that his chickens will come home to roost this election cycle. If the Republicans want to win back the legislature, they better not count on Ed Token Jones getting re-elected.
It was not only the former Trailhead Group (Headwaters), but a number of 527’s helping Jones in his ’02 race along with the State GOP contributing over $250,000 to his campaign.
Trailhead has already began radio ads in the Springs in support of Jones, and his “fight against Denver Beaucrats for school choice.” Hmm…anyone willing to wager a bet on the amount on money is dumped into this (should be serving time in prison) campaign?
I heard that they spent about $350,000 last time…..this time I’d bet that they’ll spend $500,000 to put the should-be jailbird back in office.
All that and he’s really not worth even a plugged nickel.
Quixote talked about how he won’t talk to the press – his masters won’t let him, because they know it would show just what kind of a complete illiterate he really is.
What exactly is a “plugged nickel”, it doesn’t sound good.

Not worth a plugged nickel
Meaning
Worthless.
Origin
Plugs are the holes made in coins to extract some metal which can be used for other purposes. Coins so tampered with are no longer legal tender. Nickels being coins of small denomination lend themselves for use in this phrase.
It’s not good.
Neither is Ed Token Jones.
Thanks for providing the definition.
And I’m reminded today of another incident that shows what kind of scum Token Jones is……it was at the Memorial Day ceremonies in the last election cycle, when he was running in a primary.
Everyone at the ceremony was in a suit or dressed up or in uniform, except one person.
Token Jones wore his campaign t-shirt.
How disgusting is that! Couldn’t even set aside politics for one day to show respect for our soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines. Tried to turn a memorial into a campaign event.
Token Jones is just a pig.
You do have to give it to him though, bald is beautiful. . . it will be interesting to watch though. Will the GOP dump those kinds of resources again? Certainly the D candidate will be getting alot of help, but can an R really lose in that district?
Yes, I think that he can lose.
First, he barely won last time.
Second, his district overlaps Michael Merrifield’s district – the only El Paso County house district with a democrat in the last twenty years or so.
And that district includes all of Manitou Springs, with is the most liberal area in the entire county.
And Token Jones has really hacked off a lot of people for a lot of reasons, so not only will the democrats be able to motivate a lot of people to come out and vote for their guy, there will also be a lot of republicans who won’t vote for Token Jones.
If the El Paso County republicans were smart, they’d cut their loses in him…..but they’re too arrogant and over-confident to see the reality of the situation…..and the moneybag idiots in the Trailhead Group will keep throwing money at Token Jones because he does exactly what they tell him to do.
quixote, El Paso County Republicans are “too arrogant and over-confident”? No way!
I think that’s a fair description.
They arrogantly and over-confidently figured that Dan Stuart would beat Michael Merrifield, just because he was the Republican candidate in El Paso County. Oooops.
They arrogantly and over-confidently figure that they can keep putting zeroes like Token Jones Frogface Gardner and Listless Liston in office, and there won’t be a reaction by the electorate. They need to do some re-figuring.
This election cycle, the democrats in El Paso County aren’t fielding idiot candidates just to fill a space on the ballot. They’ve put forth some people who are bound to be pretty competitive. Meanwhile, what have we seen from the Republicans? The typical complacency that since their candidates are Republican candidates, they’ll automatically win.
I call that arrogant and over-confident.
Jones needs HD17 to win. In the last SD11 election Jone’s spread was a little over 600. HD17’s spread for Jones was over 800.
He needs to ride Cloer’s coatails in but guess what? Cloer won’t endorse him since Jones went against him in the lat election.
Another thing, Jones has went against Holtzman.Literally every delegate and activist in HD17 support Holtzman.
Good points.
And since the democrats are going to field a much better candidate this time out, and almost certainly fund him better than they did in the last election cycle. Token Jones is probably going to get toasted.
Which he deserves.
Cloer has his faults, but he is generally honest, intelligent and sincere. He doesn’t endorse people just because Token Jones’ party masters in the Trailhead Groups say so (unlike scumbags like former House member Bill Sinclair who declared last election that multiply-criminally-convicted Token Jones had such HUGE integrity).
> Jones has went against Holtzman.Literally every delegate and activist in HD17 support Holtzman.
Hmm. Not that I disagree, because HD 17 would certainly tend that way, but I’m curious….do you have the actual numbers to back that up?
Is Cloer the only one in the legislative delegation who is unhappy with Jones?
I would say that most of the El Paso legislative delegation have no respect for Token Jones, but they’re stuck with him, and most of them will be good little slaves of the Trailhead Group money, just like he is.
They’re all toadies to the Pete Coors and Bill Hybels of the state. “Those who have the money make the rules.” That’s especially true in El Paso County Republican politics. Since Token Jones gets a bunch of money to be the total lackey of the Trailhead crowd, the others will tend to follow suit.
A review of records at the El Paso County Courthouse shows that between 1986 and 1991, Jones committed numerous traffic offenses.
In 1986, a warrant was issued against Jones because his license plates had expired. He pleaded guilty in court and paid a small fine. In 1988, when Jones was pulled over for speeding, he was once again fined for having expired license plates.
In 1989, police cited him for careless driving, driving without insurance, and for having “furnished,” or fraudulent, license plates. Jones pleaded guilty to driving without insurance, and the court dismissed the other charges. Court records indicate he served six months of probation and performed 40 hours of community service for that incident.
In 1990, Jones was pulled over once again and cited for driving without insurance, allowing an unauthorized person to drive, and yet another license-plate violation. However, the district attorney dismissed the insurance and license-plate citations.
And in 1991, Jones was cited for violating restrictions on a learner’s permit and displaying a fake title or license plates, though the DA ultimately dropped the charges.
In addition, records on file with the El Paso County Clerk and Recorder indicate that Jones failed to pay federal income taxes in 1980, 1981, 1982, 1983, 1985, 1986, 1988 and 1990.
In order to force Jones to pay, the Internal Revenue Service filed tax liens against him for each of those years. Some of the liens were not released until 1997.
