  2. 538.com had an article about Democratic Presidential primary debates yesterday, a clear explanation of the process of setting the field to 20.

    Colorado tie:  Hickenlooper apparently qualifies by the "polling" side of the selection, making him one of 18. 

    11 candidates have both sides, 6 more have polling only, 1 (Williamson) has money only.  [Apparently, at least 65,000 people want to have Marianne Williamson lead us "to let go of an old and tired political conversation and forge a new, whole-person, heart-centered political dynamic."]

    2. Thanks for the link , JiD. I hadn't heard of Williamson before. The song Morissette wrote for her  is great; however,  governance experience and policy chops can come with a "heart-centered approach" – so I'm still promoting Elizabeth Warren for President.

      I wonder how much stamina voters will have – to watch 20 Democratic candidates debate, let alone research and read about their votes or policies. I'm about as wonky as they come, and it sounds exhausting.

      The Democratic winners  probably will be limited to those with charisma, name recognition, money, and the best media moments.

      1. There were almost as many Republicans in 2016,MJ.  My wife and I and a judge friend of ours watched every minute of those debates, including the kiddy tables.   It was actually fascinating, in a train wreck way.

        It will thin out in a hurry after Iowa.  And we'll probably have a winner after South Carolina and California.

        Bernie is way way too old and seems to be fading early with your lady picking up some of his fans and now running third.  But are we really ready for Joe Biden, who, if memory serves, first ran with Henry Clay on the Whig ticket in 1824?

        My champion is Amy, but she seems more in line for veep if we do settle for biden.  My second choice, Kamala Harris, could crush Biden in South Carolina and California and go the distance.  Warren dies in South Carolina.

        Yes, I love Boot-the-judge but, no, we aren't ready for a gay, 37 year old small town mayor.

         

        Final five: Biden, Harris, Klobuchar, Booker and whoever wins the expectations game in Iowa.

        Final ticket:  Biden, Klobuchar. (I know that sucks but beating Stinky Boy is all important.)

        Alternative ticket Harris, Hickenlooper.  

        If we lead with a mixed race black/Asian woman, we need an old white guy for balance, but not too old. Hick fits the bill.

      2. I just learned that Jeff Berman has signed onto Beto's campaign.  Berman was the delegate counting guru for Obama in '08 — a consummate pro in all delegate rules matters.  So, it's interesting to me that he has chosen O'Rourke.

        And, ten brownie points to anyone on this site who has heard of him.

          It will be over  in March – if not the morning of the 4th, then the 17th (AZ, FL, IL)  (Standby for PUMA II, III, and IV)

          I will watch all the debates if it's possible.
          Likley not live – but PBS is online.

          And I will back off whoever Senator Franken endorses.  Otherwise- politics is hardball, bitches.

        2. I'm wondering if some of the enthusiasts for Jill Stein went to the used book store, read one of the "New York Times best-selling books" that Williamson produced, and decided she is this election cycle's savior.

           

          1. Not a lot of overlap in the Stein / Williamson Venn diagram – other than being white female Presidential candidates of approximately the same age. One's a Green Party Democratic Socialist – the other is a new age entrepeneur and self-help motivational speaker.

            From that article you linked to,  I went to another 538 article about Williamson. Apparently, most of Williamson's supporters bought a book, as you suggested, or went to / watched a seminar, ted talk, or youtube video. She also has a large following in the LGBT community because of her early work with HIV/AIDS charities.

            She has no shot at the nomination, nor should she, IMHO; but I think it's a symptom of the times that we're even discussing someone with zero political experience for the job of President.

              know Williamson from Joe Flacco.  But if she's our nominee, she's a thousand times better than the skank in the White House now.

    3. Williamson is pretty impressive in a way. She actually identified what's now known as the Dunning-Kruger effect and figured out a way to make bank on it back in 1992, a full seven years before David Dunning and Jason Kruger published their initial paper. Her schtick is more than a little wormy, but you've gotta admire the strategy and success.

        1. I actually think waitressing is fabulous e perience for politics.  You have to deal with the public in all its glory, live by your wits, make old fools think you like them.  The man or woman that can do all that has much to teach the rest of us.

I was a terrible waitress, but a pretty decent teacher, which uses much of that same skill set (deal with the young public, live by your wits, make everyone think you like them, entertain, persuade, etc.) On top of that, we need to teach content, act as de facto social workers and cops, and now the right wing wants us to be security guards as well.

PS, mj, you appeared to be addressing Madco in your rebuke of AOC's critics.  I think he's actually trying to support her, albeit in his usual beat poetry way.  Seriously, with Madco you never know.  I certainl like AOC on balance , mainly because she's smart enough to listen to Pelosi, the real brains of this party.

          1. I'm interpreting MADCO's poem as advocating that AOC should indeed "shut up and let the real leaders speak". Maybe he was being sarcastic and obscure. But I think I got it right.

            It pisses me off because I think that AOC is in fact one of our real leaders, speaking from lived experience for those who are seldom heard in Congress – young minimum wage workers.

            I've seen and heard some of the older African-American Congressional reps speak about growing up poor and working class – Maxine Waters, John Lewis, Elijah Cummings, and of course Barack Obama. For examples of others who didn't come from money and/or struggled in their early years, I only know of  Elizabeth Warren, Joe Biden, and Bernie Sanders. I don't think it's a coincidence that those three are in the top five Presidential contenders.

            There's a real hunger for representation that understands that "the struggle is real".

            If the Democratic party is smart this year, it will play to that hunger, winning back the Trump base while valuing a working class that is diverse in gender, age, and ethnicity.

MJ, You realize that we may now have a kind of Rosetta Stone for Madco?  A long beat poem purporting to trash AOC and an English translation by the man himself explaining that he only hurts the ones he loves?  If we forward this to the Kerouac Institute we may eventually be able to translate hundreds of previously indecipherable Madco postings!

                  What next?  A Turing Machine to decipher Diogenes?

                  1. I usually get Dio, possibly because my sense of humor is as weird as his.  I usually get MADCO, too – I just have to remember that he will "tell all the truth but tell it slant" as Dickinson recommends.

                    1. In the example at hand – it would help to also remember that
                      a) I often deny the premise of whomever I am responding to and do so by ignoring what they wrote to change the subject or sarcastically telling them to eat shit and stfu, not gratuitously, but because the logical, moral, ethical implication of what they said deserves it. That was true in this case.
                      b) I know people suck.
                      c) I acknowledge comedy is hard, but also have little to no patience when people don't realize how much they suck at comedy or anything else. I.e., I might just go for the punchline if they can't. Or the over the top sarcasm if they couldn't – esp if they are just too clueless to get it.

                      Let's say I do sport.
                      Obviously not football – football causes brain damage (CTE – anyone could look it up) and it is immoral to encourage participation

                      Let's say bowling.
                      Sure – I would love to throw twelve strikes in one game. Though twelve consecutive across two games would be amusing, and probably still enough to win.
                      But I would also find it amusing to get just one more point per frame than the opponent and win by 12, over and over and over.  Funnier still to announce that as my goal upfront, do it with a house ball while getting progressively drunker on whatever swill was on tap.

                      If while doing this the opponent could get so frustrated that he throws his personalized custom ball through a window or glass door into the freezing slush outside and the ball freezes and cracks in pieces…well, mess with the bull, you get the horns is just too polite. (cuz you also get hte hooves, balls, tail, teeth, etc)

                      If the American experiment has taught us anything, it should be we want accomplishment.

                      Opposition is never going to let up on whatever can create even the misperception of advantage and when ends are indifferent to means (Hang him! Lock her up! ) and raw power is to be admired and fed… things that shouldn't matter become the point.

                      I do not care about the gender of the next president. (Though a female next president would mean not the current guy – so that's a plus.)

                      Or the race, backstory, sexual orientation, religion, height, telegenicism, native languge, ethnicity, age, fashion sense, oratorical skills, etc. Except, of course, to the degree that any of those things affect electability.

                      Paul Simon's tie choice never bothered me, until I realized it was part of why he couldn't win. Likewise, Dennis Kucinich's craziness, Al Gore's inevitability and inability, John Kerry's wind surfing and pride, etc.

                      If I believed a female candidate was incapable of winning PA, MI WI or AZ – I would not want a female candidate in 2020. (I lean – I am currently undecided.)

                      But a good way to weaken or dismiss the female talent in the race is to find a woman to push out front and focus on taking her down – and by so doing, take down all women. 

                      See, Alyssa Milano and Jenny Mcarthy are just more crayzee women.
                      (All women are hysterical, and potentially crazy, why take that chance?)
                      At least they used to hot – the one running for office isn't even hot.
                      (A twofer! Women that aren't sexually attractive are less than, and aged women are just poinless)

                      I could go on – but I'm not hard to understand.

                      My heart is is the right place, I am usually right and pressed for time, and I know bs "ism" intended to weaken – in this case, cheap misogyny – when I see it.

  6. And on a less important topic than Eurovision, please not Biden. That’s voting for the past and that’s a hard sell. I think a Harris/Warren ticket would be a compelling vision of the future.

    1. Eurovision? About the only thing more boring then Eurovision is the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation — but it is a very close toss-up.

      Harris/Warren isn't even a starter package. With Biden's connections the rest of the Democratic contenders start out in third or fourth place and go down from there.
