Open The Door To Stupid, Haters Will Follow

  • by: Colorado Pols

Gov. Jared Polis Tweeted yesterday in support of victims of the bombings in Sri Lanka against Christians celebrating Easter Sunday:

Local blog Colorado Peak Politics, operated by Republican consultant group EIS Solutions, apparently found this message of support less than satisfactory–and proceeded to complain about it, because that’s what internet trolls do:

Oops! Suddenly this cheap little shot on Gov. Polis’ faith, or whatever Peak Politics presumes about Polis’ faith, has veered off course into old-fashioned anti-Semitism. It’s not that this conservative blog itself called Gov. Polis (who happens to be Jewish) a “Christ killer,” but by drive-by slamming Polis on a question of faith while Polis was trying only to offer condolences to Christians in the wake of a terrible tragedy, they opened the door to much cheaper shots. The progression from their dig on Polis’ lack of Christian faith to the anti-Semitic slur that followed is unfortunately not much of a leap.

And that’s the moral of the story. You don’t have to attack over everything.

  1. Well yes, wingnutters, there are. My father belongs to no religion; he’s borderline atheist. But he does attend Easter and Christmas services with the family.  Stop being assholes.

      1. Yep.  Regarding the back-and-forth I had with Curmy yesterday re: small towns (and Front Range mega-churches) – this is just the red meat far too many of the Christians out my way feast upon with glee.

This is worth a post again:

        My Emancipation From American Christianity

I’ve outgrown the furrowed-browed warnings of a sky that is perpetually falling.
I’ve outgrown the snarling brimstone preaching that brokers in damnation.
I’ve outgrown the vile war rhetoric that continually demands an encroaching enemy.
I’ve outgrown the expectation that my faith is the sole property of a political party.
I’ve outgrown violent bigotry and xenophobia disguised as Biblical obedience.
I’ve outgrown God wrapped in a flag and soaked in rabid nationalism.
I’ve outgrown the incessant attacks on the LGBTS, Muslim, immirgant, and Atheist communities.
I’ve outgrown theology as a hammer always looking for a nail.
I’ve outgrown the cramped, creaky, rusting box that God never belonged in anyway.

Most of all though, I’ve outgrown something that simply no longer feels like love, something I no longer see much of Jesus in.

        1. Funny how the god people claim to follow is the one that tells them to do, think, and feel exactly what they want to do, think and feel.

Yaweh is a pretty agreeable fellow, I guess.

          1. You can safely assume you've created God in your own image when it turns out that God hates all the same people you do.

            ~Anne Lamott

  2. Statement of Mike Pompeo, Secretary of State of the United States:

    Terrorist Attacks in Sri Lanka

The United States condemns in the strongest terms the terror attacks in Sri Lanka on Easter morning. Attacks on innocent people gathering in a place of worship or enjoying a holiday meal are affronts to the universal values and freedoms that we hold dear, and demonstrate yet again the brutal nature of radical terrorists whose sole aim is to threaten peace and security.

Why does Mike Pompeo hate Jesus? Say his name, Mike!

  3. That #bettyboop_1776 is a proud bigot. In addition to what she wrote to Jared Polis, she has tweets that the murder of gay youth Matthew Shepard was a hoax, that "Muslims explode when they touch bacon", etc. She also seems to be a shill (retweeter) for the white supremacist group Identity Europa, now re-branded as the American Identity Movement.

They will know you by your enemies.

  4. I actually led an Ostara service at my Unitarian church a couple of weeks ago. So that's sort of celebrating Easter as a non-Christian. But , alas, for ColoradoPeakPolitics, it's heathens all the way down.

  5. Last time I checked, very few places of worship have any means of screening the nature or quality of someone’s belief before they walk into a service of any kind. So yeah, there probably were Sri Lankans and foreigners killed and injured in the church bombings who were not Christians.

I've attended Catholic services out of an interest in my hosts who were going — but did not become a Catholic.  I've attended Jewish ceremonies and worshipped without becoming a Jew.  I've attended Muslim and Jain celebrations without changing my beliefs, too.  So beyond being a jerk for criticizing a possible grammatical error in expression of solidarity and concern, the person writing for CO Peak Politics is showing substantial ignorance.

As for the response, I once again am reminded about the level of ignorance and bigotry in the state's "community."

PS — did EITHER of the two sources say ANYTHING about their reaction to the bombing?  Or address the Sri Lankan national population which just suffered a blow that is six and a half times the harm of Columbine High School to the state of Colorado?

  6. And speaking of non-Christians celebrating Easter….

Rudy Giuliani wishes the Jewish Jake Tapper yesterday a Happy Easter. I'm guessing this is part of the push back against the War on Christmas.
