Cadman Says "Integrity" Has Led One Colo News Outlet to Succeed When Others Fail

(No comment – Promoted by Colorado Pols)

Former Colorado Republican Senate President Bill Cadman served as master of ceremonies at a gathering Thursday to celebrate the expansion to Denver of Colorado Politics, a weekly print and online political publication.

“Why is [Colorado Politics] successful when many other media organizations are going by the wayside?” Cadman asked a group of about 100 hobnobbing people in front of him at Ironworks, near Mile High stadium in Denver. “And some still here are not only shadows of their former selves. They are shadows of shadows of their former selves.”

“Because of their values,” said Cadman. “Their values are based on journalistic integrity… And that’s why I actually still read Colorado Politics.”

Most serious news industry analysts blame the demise of journalism not a lack of integrity among failed news outlets, like the Rocky Mountain News, but on the undermining of journalism’s business model, with Craig’s List first devouring newspapers’ classified ads and then other online entities steadily winning over advertisers with their ability to target customers with mind-blowing pinpoint accuracy.

In reality, the core reason for the success of Colorado Politics is conservative billionaire and GOP donor Phil Anschutz, who owns the publication via his business, Clarity Media.

That’s not to say there aren’t great journalists at Colorado Politics, because there are.

Still, it makes it noteworthy that prominent Republicans far outnumbered Democrats at the event. (See photos here.)

To be fair, a last-minute decision to change the date of the celebration, due to Wednesday’s blizzard, kept the state’s top Democrat away. Gov. Jared Polis was scheduled to be among the speakers, but when the event was moved from last Wed. to Thurs. due to the weather, Polis couldn’t make it, according to Jared Wright, who’s now the general manager of Colorado Politics. Other Democrats who were scheduled to speak before the date change were Attorney General Phil Weiser, John Hickenlooper, Bill Ritter and Wilma and Wellington Webb, plus city council members and candidates. In the past, the event has had the support of many Democrats.

Notable Republicans at the happy hour included former attorney general candidate George Brauchler, State House Minority Leader Chris Holbert, former State Senate President Kevin Grantham, State Sen. Ray Scott, State Rep. Jim Smallwood of Parker, former GOP state chair Dick Wadhams, Denver GOP chair Kristina Cook, operative Rick Enstrom, former SOS Wayne Williams spox Lynn Bartels, and Cadman.

On the Democratic side, senatorial candidate Michael Johnston spoke to the group, and Denver City Councilmember Paul Lopez made an appearance, as did former state house spokeswoman Katie Reinisch.

Sponsors were Arc Thrift Stores, CiviCo, Colorado Farm Bureau, Colorado Licensed Beverage Association, Enstrom Candies, Extraction Oil & Gas, MillerCoors, and Sewald Hanfling Public Affairs.

The staff of Colorado Politics was in attendance, including newly minted Denver columnist Neil Westergaard, a former editor of the Denver Business Journal and The Denver Post. Gazette Editor-in-Chief Vince Bzdek, who oversees Colorado Politic’s editorial content, was also there.

This article was updated to include the fact that other Democrats were scheduled to speak at the event.

  1. Obviously, Colorado Pols, Colorado Independent, and the Colorado Sun need a better class of billionaire to help insure THEIR "journalistic integrity," too. High Country News, too.

Seriously, I don't say it enough.  I appreciate what's here and the people who create it.  (Even when I have to log in again.)

  2. ARC Thrift Stores was a sponsor?  Shouldn't their money be better spent on supporting/serving individuals with intellectual disabilities as opposed to sponsoring a political rag sheet that is owned by a billionaire?  Good to know what my many, many donations have gone to benefit….

    1. As I read it, ARC sponsored the event, not the paper itself. Getting their word out at an event of this nature; attended by prominent members of both parties; is good PR for their cause.

      1. As someone who volunteered for a nonprofit for awhile, that organization "supported" some events by sending people to help set up and tear down.  Unsurprisingly, we also had staff circulating during the event, talking to people who COULD become financial supporters.

    1. Did the Senator just come in from the farm before his presentation? Maybe they could print the paper on hemp paper to give themselves an edge in the marketplace (although PoddyMouth would be afraid to touch it).
