Bennet Basically In

Sen. Michael Bennet (D).

Politico, confirming a longstanding expectation:

Colorado Sen. Michael Bennet said Thursday that he is “very inclined” to run for the Democratic nomination for president in 2020, telling his MSNBC interviewers that his decision would have nothing to do with whether former Vice President Joe Biden enters the race.

“I’m very inclined to do it, and we’re looking at it. And I think, look, the American people need somebody who’s going to run and tell them the truth in 2020,” he said on “Morning Joe.”

The two-term senator argued that making any progress in Congress is impossible “if we continue to do what we’ve been doing here for the last 10 years,” adding that he didn’t believe President Donald Trump was to blame for Washington’s gridlock. The president, Bennet said, is only a symptom of a greater problem and “an accelerant of a lot of the problems.”

Sen. Michael Bennet’s overall low profile as a Senator has been lifted in recent months by flashes of rhetorical fire that attracted national attention. Like Colorado’s other Democratic presidential contender John Hickenlooper, Bennet will need to make further and much bigger waves in order to break into the upper tier of a huge pack of 2020 Democratic candidates–a pack that already includes a host of big names.

We certainly would not underestimate Bennet’s ability to do that, however. Along the way we expect Bennet will acquit himself well, and not be prone to either gaffes or background surprises. In contrast to the progressive firebrand persona of Bernie Sanders and the youthful rock star image of Beto O’Rourke, look for Michael Bennet to build a brand of understated competence and consensus building–with the ability to thrown down when the circumstances warrant.

And we’ll see how it goes, gentle readers.

        1. laughyes I don't want Bennet on the Fed, or any Federal economic agency. He fancies himself as a dealmaker, and he's just not that good at it.  Maybe Education or HHS.

  1. Colorado Sen. Michael Bennet said Thursday that he is “very inclined” to run for the Democratic nomination for president in 2020, telling his MSNBC interviewers that his decision would have nothing to do with whether former Vice President Joe Biden enters the race.

Did you get snookered by an Onion piece, Pols?  This sounds too much like a parody of Bennet to be true.

  2. . . . adding that he didn’t believe President Donald Trump was to blame for Washington’s gridlock. The president, Bennet said, is only a symptom of a greater problem and “an accelerant of a lot of the problems.”

Newsfuckingflash — I don’t really give a good dawgdam flapping fork anymore who is blamed by whom — that’s just inside-the-beltway shit . . . (besides — Mitch McConnell/Cory Gardner/Lindsey Graham/et al — what does it matter now, anyway?) . . . I want to know your solutions!!! Talk about your solutions, futhermucker . . . or go back to selling yourself for donations, and get the fuck off of my lawn. But, just don’t waste my time anymore, huh?

We’ve got a Trumpocalypse to escape from here, and no more time to waste. Don’t try to prove to me how reasonable and evenhanded you are any longer. Do some shit, huh? . . .

PS. All my very best to Lovey!

  3. Bennet probably DOES have a better national fundraising chance than Hickenlooper, assuming he developed and kept a contacts file while running the Democratic Senatorial  Campaign Committee.  And there are probably a set of people working for the various Anschutz enterprises who might give to him and almost certainly wouldn't contribute to most declared Democratic candidates.

Another plus … if he's busy running for President, perhaps he won't be quite so much a bi-partisan buddy for Cory?

  4. "understated competence"?  I've wondered what it is that keeps Bennet in office.  He's definitely understated, in fact I would call him un-stated since he hasn't taken a stand on anything that I know of.  VoteSmart as good as called him a coward because he didn't answer any of the questions they hand out to candidates.

Neither Bennet nor Hickenlooper will be the nominee unless the rest of the candidates/near candidates kill each other off in a circular firing squad, which is always a possibility in the dim democratic party.
