The Hollies, along with Jimmy Cliff, Genesis, ABBA and Iggy Pop’s Stooges were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on Monday. I’ll take any excuse I can get to play a little Hollies. Hat tip to Ralphie who routinely bails me out with fantastic suggestions.
Thank God caucus is over. Time to party.

being a geographical bachelor sucks ass, but it makes coming home to Denver sooooo much better!
have you seen the documentary “It Might Get Loud,” Dan? It’s my Netflix queue and it’s supposed to be fantastic.
We watched “It Might Get Loud” a few weeks ago and will probably end up buying it.
Three generations of guitarists:
Jimmy Page – the sage; a laid-back Zen master
The Edge – mature, polished, still eager to learn.
Jack White – I dunno … generation X, I guess. I didn’t know much about him before I watched the DVD, but I kind of like him. He’s quirky.
A master class for rock and roll guitarists.
Jimmy Page is my all time favorite guitarist. Period.
NPR has put up the forthcoming live White Stripes album. It’s an eyebrow melter.

You are not kidding.

And I used to see them pretty regularily in London when they were recording Elephant
White Stripes at the Fillmore.
One of the most theatrical front men I’ve ever seen. Vaudevillian a way. Caught them at the Ogden Theater.
I join others in their appreciation of the film It Might Get Loud. Jack’s a bit abrasive at times, but he holds his own. Favorite part of the film is watching Jimmy Page put on his 45 of Link Wray’s Rumble and, as has been noted in reviews and such, watch him play air guitar along with it, with a big goofy loving grin of appreciation on his face.
one of my favorites. Back in the day I was very osessive about my vinyl. I played them once, to record them, and put the vinyl on the shelf. Came home from a long weekend away and could hear the song from more than a block away and was cheered. Until I got in my house and found that my bro-in-law, living with us at the time, was passed out in his bed. The turntable was set to repeat. After he woke I learned it had been playing for more than 10 hours. Had to go out and buy a new album. It has never been played. The tape still works fine so no need to play.
This song makes me crazy, in a good way.
Great story, Gray. That cracked me up.
for a total of a year or so. I’m loaded with almost unbelievable stories of madness, foolishness and sloth. At the punch line he is almost always sleeping soundly whilst I am pissed off. All laughs now.
That’s a great line–he is almost always sleeping soundly whilst I am pissed off. Isn’t that always the way? 🙂
Last October I stopped by one of my favorite stores, Black and Read, to pick up a new release by Brandi Carlile Give Up The Ghost. I couldn’t find it in the bins so I asked at the counter about it. They had not ordered it although many other group’s vinyl had been. So I ordered it. As great as her recordings are she is knockout awesome in concert.
Perhaps the youngsters around here should learn how to relax, listen and watch the logo go ’round and ’round and ’round while slurping in Boone’s Farm Apple and toking on their medicinal herb. It might mellow out a few of ’em.

at Red Rocks around 92 or 93. Superb.
That would have been memorable (or perhaps not–perhaps very fuzzy).
One of the few devotees of Islam playing reggae.
The Harder They Come — talk about a gritty classic flick. And one of the great film soundtracks of all times.
I’ll do a lesser known, but still known, song.
so thanks much for this, Danny.
Can you follow the connections?
Iggy Pop -> I wanna be your dog -> Joan Jett -> The Runaways -> Ch- ch- ch- cherry bomb!
Joan Jett and Lita Ford, I forget how ground breaking this was. Women playing instruments? that’s just crazy.
I gave up my subscription to Guitar Player about 16 years ago, so forgive me if this woman is old news.
I was watching American Idol the other night and Orianthi did a guest performance of her new single. She whipped off some two-hand tapping riffs that would have made Steve Vai’s peepee hard.
Here’s a little sampler of her. She only does a little two-hand stuff on it, but the rest is both spectacular and tasty as well.
I guess I gotta get out more. I’m missing some great young talent.
First time I saw her live was in the Hilton grand ball room in GJ. Small room. I was in the second row and got to watch her close up. I was ready to sell my guitars and give it up right there on the spot. I figured nobody else, especially me, could ever play as tasty as that, so why bother?
Sometimes the truth hurts, don’t it though. I’d give my left arm to see Hooker.
Sometimes the truth hurts, don’t it though. I’d give my left arm to see Hooker.
Thanks for that.
I like his latest solo record PrГ©liminaires, as well. Always knew his voice works great with electric guitar, but clarinet too? Mellower instrumentation, if not mellow.
I once saw Iggy standing in the aisle of Mammoth Gardens watching a show (he was set to play in town a couple days later), wearing his hair pulled back into his black leather jacket and wearing black framed glasses.
Hollies have always been one of my favs. Good to see they got inducted.
I have Fernando on my IPOD.
do you?
but good !
At last. My hero.
This is from the original solo album-Songs for Beginners:
(thank you Graham.)
but I can’t remember that I MUST get my taxes done this weekend.
I know it’s not international week at CO Pols, but I’m playing this to celebrate that Ladysmith Black Mambazo will be in GJ tonight and I’ve got two tickets. Ngiajabulani kakhulu!
They were in Fort Collins on Wed but I missed them.
But a great song.
It’s not as weird as say:

Did you see Libertad’s flag snake?
n/t
I was so-so on them as a teen, but as I reached the age they were when they made that music, it made perfect sense to me. Donald Fagen has written great some great lyrics. I like the chorus, especially, of Deacon Blues.
is that this guy is governor of Texas 30 years later! Who says American lives don’t have Second Acts?
Steve Perry has one of the best voices ever. A five octave vocal range I think.
One of my favorite scenes of music in a movie. There are a hundred great recordings of them doing this song, because they literally toured everywhere back in 2007, but this one still grabs me.
this one is for a couple of folks here, who find the “f” word so very offensive. I’m guessing neither was a big fan of this movie.
And if so, shouldn’t you be over in this diary?
Damn it MotR, you’re out of your element!
This is the absolute classic of the genre …
Just think of all the public libraries and nursing homes that now filter out Colorado Pols.
I kinda like this one
If we’re going to be accused of being 3 year olds, we may as well deliver. Makes me want to repost Ralphie’s great “fuck” audio but I don’t know where I saved it. There are loads of great versions on youtube but his is the best.
: )
I’ve give you money for your timing alone, if I had any. 🙂
Above the Clouds. Groovy and funky.
And speaking of women playing instuments there is a lady playing bass. Something about that is just HOT !
Unlike other punk bands, they never seemed angry at all to me.
Check out this Top of the Pops performance and the four chaps in uniforms shouting backup vocals, part of the Mod scene in Woking.
They look like they should work for the Queen.
I don’t mean, like, is he alive or anything. I mean what the hell has happened to his ballsy songwriting since this time, post-The Jam?!
I meant Paul Weller.
Peter Weller, he was in Naked Lunch.
Paul Weller — who knows, he turned into Sting. I like his last 20 years of music, but he’s not the ballsy young man he was. Guess he got older.
still going strong in his 50s
