Today, Colorado Springs Mayor Lionel Rivera turned in over 1,700 signatures to the Secretary of State, becoming the first candidate in the 5th Congressional District to officially make the August 8 primary ballot.?
Showing support across the district, Rivera turned in signatures from all six of the counties within the 5th CD.
?
?It is with pleasure that I am able to turn in so many signatures today,? Rivera said.? ?I am honored by the support I have received through this all-volunteer process, both in the number of people supporting my candidacy by signing the petition, and the great volunteers who have walked neighborhoods with me and on their own to collect signatures.?
?
Recently, campaigns have started turning to paid signature collectors to gain access to the ballot.? However, Rivera insisted on an all-volunteer effort, gathering more than 700 signatures of his own.? Additionally, there were over 20 volunteers contributing to the effort.
?
?Gathering signatures myself gave me a wonderful opportunity to talk with the voters of the 5th CD,? said Rivera.? ?I got to meet people in all six counties in the district, hear about their issues and concerns, and hopefully secure their vote this August.?
?
In order to petition on to the August 8 primary ballot, candidates must turn in at least 1,000 valid signatures from voters of the same party affiliation within the district. ?

Alright, the first step on his way to Congress!
The debat last night with Mayor Ray Nagen from New Orleans on MSNBC pointed out one clear fact. How many Mayors of metropolitan cities have gone on to higher office?
Nationwide, the answer is NONE. None have because the mayor’s office is the end of the line. Trying to make the leap to Congress or President does not work. If Ray Nagen knows it, what’s up with Rivera?
C and D will kill Rivera’s chances for sure. 85% of the votes for 5th Congressional come from El Paso County. El Paso County went against both C and D. Ask Pete Coors what happened with El Paso County. Rivera will fail also, he just doesn’t know it. Or worse yet, is misreading the tea leaves.
Better go and have those palms and tea leaves read again.
This is a far cry from the 20,000 he was boasting to have.
george, lay off the weed.
I heard Truebner boasting to have a lot more than that as well. Maybe not 20,000, but he said “thousands” would be turned in. They did a lot of walmart, standing downtown, stuff like that might turn out to have a lot of U or D voters instead of the Rs needed on his petetions. We’ll have to wait and see how many of them are legitimate. Rivera’s campaign is tanking right now. He’s not in any of the stories about the race and his liberal record is shining through lately on the council. He doesnt have a prayer.
MrHandy2001,
Don’t ask Pete Coors about El Paso.. Ask that traitorous, back stabbing weasel Bob Shaffer
Tow peas in a pod. Just look at them now. Wouldn’t support Shaffer for dog catcher, even if he was unopposed.
Your dogcatcher performs quite an important job and no doubt does it better than Rivera performs his.
Dogcatchers, because the job is important, is rarely, if ever, elected.
[…] Businessman Patrick Carter, who was a longshot at best, received less than 10% of the vote and is now out of the running. The rest of the field can petition onto the ballot. Colorado Springs Mayor Lionel Rivera has already submitted his petition signatures and will likely make the ballot through that route. […]
