Former State House Speaker Crisanta Duran kicked off her campaign for Congress in CO-1 (Denver) on Sunday with an exclusive interview with Denver7. Today, Duran rolled out a nice endorsement in former Denver Mayor Federico Peña.
As Ernest Luning reports for the publication formerly known as the Colorado Statesman, it’s not hard to figure out what message apparently polled the best in her pre-campaign research (all bold text is Colorado Pols’ emphasis):
Duran declined to point out policy differences with DeGette, who was first elected to the Denver-based 1st Congressional District seat in 1996, but said she wants to let voters in the heavily Democratic district decide if it’s time for a different style of leadership…
…”I have appreciated the work Congresswoman DeGette has done,” Duran said. “I do think, though, in these time when we have Donald Trump in the White House, we must evaluate how we move this country forward and make sure we have the right leaders in the right place at the right time.”
She added: “These times in particular, we need to make sure we’re doing everything in our power to be able to lead. I have a new and different style of leadership that I could bring to Congressional District 1. At the end of the day, it’s up to the voters to decide who is the best leader moving forward.”
Her leadership style, Duran said, involves listening to constituents.
“Building community is very important to me and is a different leadership style, I think. I also think that during the time that I’ve served, I’ve never shied away from tough issues,” Duran said. “In this time we need leaders who do things not for political convenience, but for political courage. It’s not a time to be shy, it’s not a time to play it safe, it’s a time to be bold. And I think it should be up to the people of Congressional District 1 to be able to cast their vote (for) who is the best leader to move the district forward.”
In fairness to Duran, words like “conductor,” “skipper,” and “pacesetter” probably don’t pop as much with focus groups.

My guess is those same polling groups were just as likely to come up with words, the “leader” word in particular, that may not have good application to Ms. DeGette?? . . .
. . . As in, “If you remember what you liked most about Pat Schroeder and then think of Diana DeGette, are there any words you might use to distinguish differences between them?”
Credit where due, Degette has done a fine job leading on reproductive rights as co-chair of the Pro-Choice Caucus. If Planned Parenthood is still able to offer birth control in low-income neighborhoods, in spite of $rump's latest exec order Title X rule change, it will be due to the leadership of the pro-choice caucus.
She's also a leader on promoting stem cell research.
She's kind of middle of the road on clean energy and climate change, as well as health care reform. Pretty solid centrist progressive, solid policy wonk.
Decent at governance, no charisma. Reputed to be rude and inaccessible to constituents who look her up in DC, just "meh" on constituent services locally. But I still don't see where replacing her with Duran would be trading up.
She only gets half credit on the stem cell issue. It's not altruistic; one of her daughters is a juvenile diabetic.
That's not halfcredit, its extra credit. I've been diagnosed as a diabetic for 47 years.
My point, V. is that she cares about it because she's got a dog in the fight. If it didn't personally affect her, I doubt she'd care.
I understand your point, Cookie, but I don't care. Yes, she has a dog in the fight. I'm one of them! As I write this I am recovering from a blood sugar crash of 61. If anything, the fact that Diana has a personal stake in helping people like me is an extra reason to support her.
Even if she didn't have a dog in this fight, she would likely still support stem cell research. Maybe it wouldn't be near the top of her issues.
That was, indeed, my point, unnamed.
We're all Democrats now.
I need a job, dammit, and I'm too old to go back to that damn car wash. That 175k a year as a Congressthing will do nicely until I have enough seniority to cash in the really big bucks as a lobbyist.
She declined to point out policy differences with DeGette
That's because there are none.
riiight. That's why AOC won – policy differences
do nothing, speak when spoken to, follow the caucus,
I do not currently live in CD1. but if I did, I would find out what differences there are.
Maybe, and I'm just spitballing, Representative DeGette recruited her so as to avoid a more difficult challenge from the left. Maybe not.
CPols loves the status quo.
Why can’t Democrats – especially those in safe seats – be bold enough to expand the dialogue, increase the idea of what’s possible in the richest and “greatest” country on earth, act without being afraid of being called “progressive” or “liberal”?
It shouldn’t be that difficult.
Zappatero:
Who is the "bold enough" candidate expanding the dialogue and increasing the idea of what's possible that you are measuring Representatives by? And what have they done to get legislation passed?
By DW-Nominate scores, DeGette gets a -0.432 score on economic liberalism, putting her around 60-65 most liberal in the House. In the full accounting of Senate and House during the past session, here are the 10 on either side of DeGette — not too shabby a group in my opinion.
Well said, John.
Then Duran should do so…
…crickets…
DeGette is good on state-wide public lands issues. Duran was equally OK on those while in the Legislature.
I don’t live in CD-1. But first thought coming to mind is why fix something if it isn’t broken.
And why give up 24 years of seniority just because Duran needs a job.
Right. I mean, just another year or two and maybe she’ll finally feel like she’s been there long enough to actually start doing something? . . .
Leadership you say?
Like DeGette has in the Democratic Caucus?
That we should replace with a rookie back-bencher?
That would require a strong argument. None to be found thus far.
