Jonathan Swan at Axios claims
The only advantage I can see to this is Trump actually saying something he's willing to do — which MAY provide cover for McConnell to put the offer on the floor. I'm not certain there is any Democratic input to hint of 7 Senators joining Republicans to allow consideration.
Chance of the House Democrats biting on this? None. "Open the Government and we can talk" is going to be the basis of response. Apparently, there is a developing Democratic counter offer of more money for stuff done on the border in exchange for opening the government — but specifically excluding the wall.
You can't negotiate with a sociopath. Trump's entire business history demonstrates that you can't trust a deal with him, even after it's signed.
Pelosi may be a tough negotiator, but in fact she is also a realist. She knows that could agree to the wall, send the bill up, but then what? Trump would veto it and demand something bigger.
Yeah, we need impeachment, which will happen only after convincing the Republicans that they need to cut Trump loose. That's a tough haul; 65 votes in the Senate would leave Trump in place.
The shutdown may be painful, but it is more painful for the Republican Party than for the Democrats. The leverage given by the shutdown has brought the impeachment timeline forward.
SO:
(1) Pelosi has no choice, you can't negotiate with a sociopath,
(2) Pelosi has leverage with the shutdown, she can twist the screws on the sociopath's friends and enablers.
(3) Impeachment is a more distant and difficult bridge to cross.
Actually 34 Senators voting to acquit leaves him in office.
Must be a slow news time in Jon Caldara's world at the Independence Institute. His column in today's (Jan. 19) Denver Post editorial page is about drag queens.
A worthy subject, to be sure, but Trump apologists at every level are twisted in knots about now.
Note the un-barrage of RWNJobbery we are seeing here. All quiet on the Idiot Front.
Nothing to do with how hot or cold the news is. No major industry cash for comment came in this week so he had to fall back on the right wing staple of bigots being the real victims and the liberals being big ol' meanies.
Yep, last week he was whining that us mean ol' Libs are intolerant of bigots — which makes us hypocrites in his view.
Victimhood must be his main preoccupation these days, it's all he's been writing about for the last month.
Still, I kind of like the idea of concealed carry gun fashion shows for drag queens. How are your fashion skills, Negev?
Skills? I got mad skills…
.
Yeah, that editorial wasn't really about drag queens. It was whining about people accepting trans people and educating others about us, including children. He just repeatedly conflated being trans and dressing in drag.
Probably the worst line comes from right here at the start:
He's calling trans people "dudes dressing like chicks" (which not only is a disgusting way to talk about trans women, but also ignores the existence of trans men or any non-binary person), centering drag around cishet men dressing as women, ignoring the much, much longer history of gay men engaging in drag, and he's dismissing any problematic elements to how drag, as it's generally done, relates to trans people as people being kill joys.
This serves to frame the rest of the article where he continues to use the term "drag" and talk of "men dressed as women" and move constantly between that and "trans people" as if it's actually fucking the same. Fuck him and fuck the Denver Post for publishing this shit.
Has it occurred to you that The Post is giving him a platform to make a fool of himself before a wider audience? I have no concern that the paper is in agreement with him.
Has it occurred to you that the Post is giving him a platform because lots of people will nod along and agree with it and come away with the impression that trans people are indoctrinating their children?
Yup. An expert on LGBTQ culture, Caldara is not. He obviously went for the sensational topic for his column, and a chance to play his tiny violin about the "intolerance" of Teh Libz.
Finally, kudos to Miss Unita ReadMoore, and her ilk, volunteering at local libraries to read to kids. That kind of kindness and fortitude takes tits and balls. And Kudos to the Windsor library for hosting them.
From the Coloradoan:
I actually like the idea that the Post will give space to a conservative columnist like Caldara, although he isn't a very good conservative in my lights. They could do better.
On the other hand, one can observe Sinclair Broadcasting with their occasional mandatory requirements that their newscasters read pro-Trump material.
I don't like the idea that someone who speaks about people like me in that way is given a platform by them.
You just referred to yourself as “me.” Didn’t you mean “us?”
No. You aren't being funny. You're just being a dick.
What kind of people, then, "is you?"
Trans.
If dead bird was a trans woman or man, he or she would not panic at being called he or she. Dead bird only insists on gender neutral terms because deadbird also claims to be nonbinary. But a trans woman identifies as a woman, not a neuter. I fear the feathered one has its terminology all entangled.
I'm a non-binary trans person. You do not know what you are talking about on this issue, Voy. Please stop pretending like you do.
Google the transequality.org guideline ,feathered one. They state thevast majority of transfolk are men or women. On this subject , as on many others, thou knoweth not between shit and Shinola
Right here on their website they discuss non-binary trans people as trans people. When you cite a source like that, make sure it doesn't contradict what you were saying, first.
Alternatively,
They do not agree with you that non-binary people are not trans.
lolberts are like anti-vaxxers in that they consider themselves experts on absolutely everything. Don't take my word for it, though. Just ask any lolbert.
OMFG….
My Cat and I had to take turns leaving the TV this morning to go slam a door or something. "Americas' Mayor" appeared on Meet the Press this AM. We searched for a word to describe his interview and came up with…surreal.
The lighting looked like a set from an FBI interrogation. Rudy was sweating. His eyes seemed almost glazed. His nearly incoherent interview ended when he told Chuck Todd that "obstruction" could not be reached unless the President had told someone "lie to congress or I'll have your kneecaps broken".
The only thing more flabbergasting and surreal was listening to Dianne(?) Pletka from the American Enterprise Institute trying to defend the continued bullshit from the White House.
Not to be outdone, Face the Nation hosted the Mike Pence "Well, look Margaret" recording of the "Master of the Bullshit and Pivot, Smiling Reassuringly While Treating You Like an Idiot and a Fool Because I know You Won't Jump in the Shit of the Vice President, You Enemy of the State You" demonstrating his qualifications for taking over for the Liar-in-Chief.
I get the increasing sense that I am living in the middle of a Tom Robbins novel.
What wizardry is this? MTP is on now on Denver tv now.
I know DVR/TIVO and even my vcr can time shift broadcast… but into the future?
Pence was even 'better' (far worse) with Chris Wallace.
Omg – it was funnier than SNL. But I know realize VP Pence believes he is going to be the next president.
Cory gets a moment in the national press. His picture appears in the Washington Post as the "grabber" before the story.
GOP senators try to figure how out closely to run with Trump
The final 'graph:
I am thinking one of the reasons McConnell suggested throwing out a temporary 3 year DACA fix as bait was to get Democratic incumbents on record as casting a vote against the program. Elections are coming and such a vote can be snipped out of context and misused by an unscrupulous right wing campaign ( is there any other kind?) to confuse voters.
Exactly the kind of slippery politics favored by the GOPs' favorite eel-like creature. He may look like a turtle, but actually his totem is a hybrid, snapping turtle and Moray eel.
Cory is clearly Mitchs' match for dishonesty…he just isn't as smart or ruthless.
He probably can't work on "smart," but I'll bet he's striving to achieve more on "ruthless."
Called it, Duke.
Dave Perry pissed me off

Really — give in to terrorists if they pinky swear never to take hostages again
I would give in… For a permanent spending resolution/dumping of the debt ceiling so no party or president can never take the country hostage this way again. If there is a failure to create a budget then a budget is created that is identical to last year plus population increase times inflation. And a repeal of the 250K+ tax cuts. Gotta pay for it after all.
Negotiating with terrorists is fine if part of the negotiation is veritably disarming them.
I don't think Dave understands what MLK stood for if he thinks giving a racist asshole money for a racist project is a good thing to do on MLK Day.
Regarding the confrontation yesterday between the Catholic Boys, the Black Hebrew Israelites, and Nathan Phillips of the Indigenous People's March:
You may have seen the video of Mr. Phillips standing his ground, singing and drumming, while the MAGA-hatted Covington Catholic Boys (CCB) mocked him. The longer video, posted by the Cincinnatti Enquirer, shows how the Black Hebrew Israelites (BHI) incited and provoked the confrontation.
They were equal-opportunity offenders; the BHI speaker called the Catholic boys "Incest babies", and shouted at the Indigenous Marchers that the Native folks worshipped idols, and that was why their lands were taken from them. Nasty stuff. From the videos, it’s impossible to say who “started it”, to use middle school parlance.
I found something that I haven't seen in the Washington Post news coverage of this story. The "Black Hebrew Israelites" (BHI); was the same organization that "Michael the Black Man" belonged to. This guy, aka Michael Symonette, famously stood behind Trump at a rally, holding a "Blacks for Trump" sign. His website, gods2.com, is a rotting compost heap of batshit craziness. And yes, the BHI do hate native folks, especially the Cherokee tribe.
My theory is that Symonette is a genuine nut; however, his organization is useful to Trump both as a means of saying that there are "Blacks for Trump", and as a provocateur, as it was in this incident.
I don't think that the Covington Catholic High School kids were innocent; they came to Washington for the March for Life, and were clearly spoiling for a fight, even yelling "Fight! Fight!" as well as behaving in a threatening manner to both the Israelite guy and Mr. Phillips. Some outlets reported that they were also yelling racial slurs at the Black Israelites, and at the Indigenous People, behaving like a mob, surrounding the few black and native people from the other groups.
The only one coming out of this as a hero was Mr. Phillips, who just kept on drumming and chanting, trying to bring peace and harmony back to the situation, even in the face of insanity, bigotry, and hate.
This is a response to JIDs’ post above. Some sort of operator error…I’m sure.
I see the typo in your link is in the Posts' headline. I expect better from the Post, but, as a lover of our language, I am increasingly dismayed at the casual disregard displayed nowadays for spelling and grammar.
It contributes to my crankiness and general disdain for humans. 😄
