Seven Republicans Vote No on Back Pay for Federal Employees

  • by: Colorado Pols

UPDATE: Rep. Ken Buck was apparently misidentified as one of the 7 Republicans voting against back pay for federal employees.

—–

As The Hill reports, Congress is trying to do the right thing for federal workers who will miss their first paycheck today as a result of the government shutdown:

The House on Friday cleared a bill that would ensure back pay for federal workers missing paychecks as a result of the partial government shutdown, as well as guarantee payment for employees affected by any future closures.

The measure passed with broad bipartisan support, 411-7. All seven votes against the bill came from Republicans.

The Senate approved the back pay measure — unanimously — on Thursday, and President Trump says he will sign the legislation. That makes the overall vote total 511-7 in favor of paying federal employees the salary they are currently not receiving through no fault of their own.

  1. When my company closed0 I never got back pay.
Federal employees have everything : back pay, pension, TSP, killer health plan, job security, union representation, flex schedules,

    And it's all publicly funded

      1. Bwahahahaha

My point is that D's are 1st degree idiots – they can't message, they can't persuade, they can't put youth or color in front of the camera.

OMG – the progressive electoral strategy is to wait for all the opposition to die off.

I mean it's foolproof – but omg stoopid.

          1. Messaging.

…how an organization talks about itself and the value it provides. Related to positioning, messaging is an approved set of key points or messages an organization uses to communicate about something with a target audience.

…carefully highlighting positive facts that favor the story you wish to tell the voters while downplaying or ignoring the facts that work against the story you wish to tell the voters.

Not messaging, not persuasive, not helpful:
            "Trump sux"
            "OMG that other guy sux."
"But what about him/her/that other time"
            https://blog.traindemocrats.org/political-messaging-local-party/

I want the US Government to govern.
Like minded people, especially those in office, need to do what needs to be done, and that includes telling the story and persuading voters. Telling the story about some single parent panicked about paying rent is not going to get us there.

Of course they deserve their back pay. Those who were required to work without pay, should get double pay for the all that time. And that double time should include doubling the service credit and contribution to their pensions.
Of course putting the rank and file back to work and furloughing the president and the most of the cabinet is the better move.

Representative Ocasio Cortez or Mitch McConell?
            duh

There is big, burning stupid out there. And in here.
But the stupid is not observing how inept and pointless the D opposition is.

            1. So you'd like Democrats to have a nice unified messaging operation? Everyone on the same page repeating the same talking points? Back up the party leadership?

How is that working out for Republicans? 538 sez the polls point to "Not Well".

              1. Well when you put it that way – clearly what I want is what's going to happen.

I want progressive thinkers to be heard.
I want people who whine about the partial shutdown to realize that worrying about unpaid workers and the unfairness of required to work without pay doesn't work on otherwise fairminded people who have no back pay, no pension, no headlines, no freebies.

                Not unified – effective.
Not the same page – but focused on organizing and registering voters.

            2. As you obviously have the answers, please proceed to sell your services to the progressive forces who want to win in 2020.

Putting Ocasio-Cortez front and center to oppose Mitch McConnell appears to be your solution.  How's that working out so far? When will we start seeing signs of success from a first term Representative versus a Senator first elected in 1984?

              1. Keep in mind, JiD, that the Republican leadership are choosing to lose their minds over Ocasio-Cortez, going so far as to broadcast an old dance video in an attempt to discredit her. They like her as a foil the way they like to use any outspoken Democrat.

She is just being who she is. Her district voters had a choice between an old moderate, whom you would have undoubtedly preferred, and a young, smart progressive and outspoken candidate.

Mitch McConnell needs to go – Allison Grimes gave it a good shot in 2014 – but we need to do better in 2020.  Mitch is feeling the heat for the shutdown, and that's only going to increase the more he stonewalls and abrogates his constitutional responsibilities.

Mitch is unpopular in Kentucky, but he keeps getting re-elected, because he owns the machine.

The outcome of the governor's race in KY in 2019,  may throw a wrench in Mitch's machine.

However, people are already crowdfunding his 2020 opponent – whomever that is.

It's a bit more complicated than, "Just shut that uppity woman (AOC) up before she ruins our chances of taking Mitch's seat."

              2. The prosecution rests.

                No you do it.
                No you do it.
                No, you're dumb.
                No, you are.

AOC is front and center because the R's put her there.
I'm fine with it – because she rocks way more than you.

But the message is to candidates in CO CD1.
Crowley was a do nothing but put int he time D.  We have one of those in CD1. Who's got the chops to primary that CD1 do nothing D?

Sure, 'we're all Democratss now" but is that really enough?
