I want the US Government to govern.
Like minded people, especially those in office, need to do what needs to be done, and that includes telling the story and persuading voters. Telling the story about some single parent panicked about paying rent is not going to get us there.
Of course they deserve their back pay. Those who were required to work without pay, should get double pay for the all that time. And that double time should include doubling the service credit and contribution to their pensions.
Of course putting the rank and file back to work and furloughing the president and the most of the cabinet is the better move.

So you'd like Democrats to have a nice unified messaging operation? Everyone on the same page repeating the same talking points? Back up the party leadership?
How is that working out for Republicans? 538 sez the polls point to "Not Well".
Well when you put it that way – clearly what I want is what's going to happen.
I want progressive thinkers to be heard.
I want people who whine about the partial shutdown to realize that worrying about unpaid workers and the unfairness of required to work without pay doesn't work on otherwise fairminded people who have no back pay, no pension, no headlines, no freebies.
Not unified – effective.
Not the same page – but focused on organizing and registering voters.
As you obviously have the answers, please proceed to sell your services to the progressive forces who want to win in 2020.
Putting Ocasio-Cortez front and center to oppose Mitch McConnell appears to be your solution. How's that working out so far? When will we start seeing signs of success from a first term Representative versus a Senator first elected in 1984?
Keep in mind, JiD, that the Republican leadership are choosing to lose their minds over Ocasio-Cortez, going so far as to broadcast an old dance video in an attempt to discredit her. They like her as a foil the way they like to use any outspoken Democrat.
She is just being who she is. Her district voters had a choice between an old moderate, whom you would have undoubtedly preferred, and a young, smart progressive and outspoken candidate.
Mitch McConnell needs to go – Allison Grimes gave it a good shot in 2014 – but we need to do better in 2020. Mitch is feeling the heat for the shutdown, and that's only going to increase the more he stonewalls and abrogates his constitutional responsibilities.
Mitch is unpopular in Kentucky, but he keeps getting re-elected, because he owns the machine.
The outcome of the governor's race in KY in 2019, may throw a wrench in Mitch's machine.
However, people are already crowdfunding his 2020 opponent – whomever that is.
It's a bit more complicated than, "Just shut that uppity woman (AOC) up before she ruins our chances of taking Mitch's seat."
I wonder if any of this concern is ever shown towards a young, brash, newly elected male Democratic Representative?
