As NBC News reports, President Trump got the message — after much chastising from other Republicans — that he should do more to acknowledge the late Senator John McCain (R-Arizona):
Following blistering criticism from lawmakers in both parties and veterans groups, President Donald Trump announced Monday he had signed a formal proclamation that would give Sen. John McCain his full honors.
In a statement, Trump said he’d signed the proclamation keeping the White House flag at half-mast through the Arizona Republican’s interment, scheduled for Sunday.
“Despite our differences on policy and politics, I respect Senator John McCain’s service to our country and, in his honor, have signed a proclamation to fly the flag of the United States at half-staff until the day of his interment,” Trump said…
…He added that he’d asked Vice President Mike Pence to offer an address at a Friday ceremony at the U.S. Capitol honoring McCain and that he’d authorized, “at the request of the McCain family,” military transportation of the late senator’s remains from Arizona to Washington, D.C., military pallbearers and band support, and a horse and caisson transport during the service at the United States Naval Academy.
Trump’s decision to issue a proclamation came less than a day after the White House had re-raised its flag Monday morning following McCain’s death on Saturday and just hours after veterans groups and lawmakers from both parties, were furious over the administration’s decision to prematurely re-raise the flag, demanded it be flown at half-mast for a longer period of time. [Pols emphasis]
Once again, ladies and gentlemen: The President of the United States of America.

Every time I think The Yam can’t get any more tone-deaf or ham-handed, he says “Hold my Diet Coke”.
McCain was really terrible to Trump. He will still get all his honors!
It's an oath to the country — not a person. McCain served his country — not a two-bit Banana Republic wannabe-dictator.
…and we'll bestow the prestigious Golden Raspberry award on you at our annual gala this Fall, Nutter. (it's the evening after mid-terms). Be sure to wear something that doesn't make your butt look big.
McCain was not only the bravest of the brave in my war, he was the most honora ble of the honorable. In contrast, draft dodger Trump was a coward and a traitor.
McCain was an Annapolis man but lived by the motto I learned in my West Point years: Duty, Honor, Country.
And you hate the hero of my generation of veterans and worship the draft-dodging traitor.
Go to Hell, you son of a bitch. Julius and Ethel Rosenburg will be so happy to see you.
So, Mr. 4-F class zero, who can't even identify which foot had bone spurs, chose to denigrate one who spent 5 years in Hanoi Hilton enduring torture, both physical and mental, just because he was shot down? McCain turned down being released until other POW's were and increased the time of his imprisonment and abuse. And Trump dragged him through the mud and is offended that Sen. McCain didn't go along with all his plans to destroy our country?
Geez…Moderatus. You have some absolutely weird ideas about patriotism and service to country. It's sad that you are representative of too many of those in your party. I pray for the future of our country and our world since you and your ilk now have the keys to power.
