Gardner Acts As If There's No Hypocrisy In His Meeting With Trump's SCOTUS Nominee

Sen. Cory Gardner (R).

Colorado Sen. Cory Gardner released videos yesterday of himself gushing over Trump’s Supreme Court nominee, Brett Kavanaugh.

Gardner’s embrace of Kavanaugh stands in contrast to the Republican senator’s refusal to even meet with Obama’s Supreme Court selection Merrick Garland. Gardner explained at the time that he wouldn’t meet with Garland because “our next election is too soon and the stakes are too high; the American people deserve a role in the process as the next Supreme Court justice will influence the direction of this country for years to come.”

Yesterday, with an election about three months away, Gardner issued a news release titled, “Gardner Meets With Supreme Court Nominee Judge Brett Kavanaugh,” which stated:

GARDNER: “Today I was able to meet with Judge Kavanaugh –  clearly he is a well-qualified judge who has incredible experience in the federal courts. We had a long conversation about the role of precedent and how a judge should perform on the bench. It’s not about personal opinion, it’s not about personal biases or policy preferences, it’s about looking at the law and ruling on the law and where the law takes you. We had a good conversation about how he would be on the Supreme Court. It was a very good meeting and I think he will make an incredible Supreme Court Justice.”

Here are the videos Gardner released related to his meeting with Kavanaugh.

In the first video below Gardner said he normally he shares with them “the shrine,” which is a John Elway jersey, and he apologized for not being able to share the jersey with Kavanaugh. Garnder also said it was a “great meeting.”

The second video is Gardner’s statement.

Kavanaugh’s opponents say his addition to the U.S. Supreme Court could gut Roe v. Wade, the landmark decision guaranteeing abortion rights.

Kavanaugh would replace Justice Anthony Kennedy, who is also a conservative mostly, but sided with liberal justices in key cases involving abortion rights and social issues.

In 2016, Gardner’s refusal to meet with Garland earned Gardner a personal rebuke from Obama.

  1. May Gardner get the largest of stinging rebukes from Colorado voters in 2020.

But now, he is unsurprisingly gushing over a Benedict Donald SCOTUS pick.

    MAGA!!!  Moscow Agents Governing America!!!!

    1. And if Bennet votes to confirm, you'll see me and Zappy Bennet-bashing in perpetuity.

Cory we expect to be a snake. Bennet we still have hopes for.

      1. Bennet announced "grave concerns" immediately after the nomination was made. He didn't vote for Gorsuch, when there were some more immediate reasons (Colorado ties) to do so.

Why is anyone worried about Bennet going outside the Dem. mainstream to support a Justice Kavanaugh?

      1. Right now, Bennet says he has "Grave Concerns" about Kavanaugh's nomination.

Scotusblog says that Collins and Murkowski are delaying meeting with Kavanaugh until they have reviewed more of his writings.

A filibuster is still a possibility unless the ReThugs want to go nukular and kill the filibuster for Supreme court nominees…..a risky move since Dems are likely to take the Senate. We know Bennet can speak at length, can presumably filibuster. This is Bennet speaking against the GOP "skinny repeal" of the ACA, about a year ago last summer.  And on the GOP tax plan. So he can deliver a fiery speech when he needs to.

So we don’t need to break out the bipartisan buns for a wienie roast of Bennet quite yet. That sounds really dirty, and I don’t care.

In the meantime, call the man and tell him how you feel. Tell Cory, too. Cory don't care, but call his ass anyway.

        1. Republicans under McConnell already went nuclear on Supreme Court Justices. Gorsuch confirmation was 54-45, and those 45 would certainly have blocked it if the rule had continued.

          1. You're right, of course. I had forgotten that McConnell had already pressed the big red button. Still, Senators can stall and refuse and balk and talk til they're blue in the face. I expect nothing less of Bennet.

Cory's grin will stretch from talking out of both sides of his mouth.

Stall until after the midterms, at least, say I.

            1. Wanting to delay to after November's election — that is why I'm skeptical of going public with the appeal to Bush 43 to release the Kavanaugh corpus of materials.

I've seen estimates of "at least a million" from his time in the service of Bush. It sounds preposterous — but when I did the math, dividing the million by 5 years, and again by 365 days, it is "only" a bit less than 550 a day — one a minute for a ten-hour work day.

              1. Delay, stall, put off until after the midterms. By any means necessary.  As McConnell did with Merrick Garland. The GOP hypocrisy now, of course, is stunning.

There is a good argument to be made that Kavanaugh's written record as staff sec to Bush will reveal who Kavanaugh really is. I'm for it.

                1. I think there are VERY good reasons for getting the written record. The fact Kavanaugh lied about his involvement in torture discussions while working for Bush hints there may be positions worth questioning — especially if it might trigger a conscience in someone like Sen. Rand Paul and get Rand to exercise his "advice" function with vigor.

I just don't want to push Bush into giving approval, which would speed up the release of documents.

  2. Incredible”, indeed. Perhaps that word doesn’t mean what you think it means?

    in·cred·i·ble

    inˈkredəb(ə)l/

    1. impossible to believe.

"an almost incredible tale of triumph and tragedy"
