  1. Sales of Febreze and duct tape are at record levels i n Helsinki as the city reels under a Cat 5 Trump stink alert.  Parents are trying to explain to children what "kissing Putin's butt" means.

    Stay upwind, Finland.

  2. The Kleptocrat-in-Chief is on an all-expenses-paid vacation (by taxpayers) and promotional tour to his Scottish golf resort.  Just because he owns the joint doesn't mean he and his entourage get to stay for free (no discounts for his Secret Service protective detail either!).

His arrival at Turnberry marks the 169th day during his presidency that he has visit a property owned, managed or branded by the Trump Organization. Financial records show the resort has lost money since Mr. Trump paid about $60 million to purchase it in 2014.

“Through this trip to Turnberry,” Mr. Eisen said, “the president is forcing his foreign hosts and the United States to spend enormous amounts of money so that he can get free advertising for his resort.”

This is not the first time that Mr. Trump has visited a Trump-owned resort while traveling in his capacity as president. On a 13-day trip through Asia, the president swung by the Trump International Hotel Waikiki resort for a 10-minute visit.

An analysis of that trip by The Associated Press showed that Mr. Trump’s stopover cost American taxpayers almost $141,000, or more than $100 a minute. The president’s hotel stop itself cost taxpayers $1,000.

  3. Only the artists and ordinary people of the world are telling Trump what they really think of him.

From CNN's coverage of Trump's visit to the UK:

Diplomats, world leaders, reporters, and White House staff continue to treat the narcissist-in-chief with kid gloves. Imagine what would happen if they didn't!

Merkel: Here are some toy soldiers and tanks you can play with. Stay here and eat your cheeseburger.

Kelly: You're on time out, Mr. President. You know what you did. Go sit on your golden potty.

Kellyanne: Here's your special phone to tweet with. No, I don't know why it's in primary colors with big buttons and makes cartoon noises. I told you it was special, just like you.

Sarah Huckabee-Sanders: What the fuck did that moron say now? How am I supposed to spin this?

    1. The blimp is one of my favorites – in addition to pointing out the obvious whiny orange toddler, it appropriately echoes the old story of the Emperor's New Clothes.

I wonder when #TrumpsterFire's town finally declares, "But he hasn't got anything on!"

      1. Joy Reid's guest, former ambassador Michael McFall, said today that while the American people writ large are not in favor of Trump's policies and demeanor), the Congressional leadership and big donor base is very happy with it, or at least willing to tolerate it. Why?

He has given these 1%ers huge tax breaks and at least one, maybe two, Supreme Court seats.

So they're willing to look the other way while Trump undoes 65 years of  post WWII foreign policy , realigning  the USA with authoritarian eastern dictators, and away from traditional  European allies. They'll also tolerate him undermining American democracy at home.  In other words, they're traitors.

We have to amplify the voices of ordinary people to drown out the rustling of the traitors’ money.

Just a reminder to everyone : If you haven't called your Senators for a few days, do it again. Say "No" to the current Supreme Court pick, Kavanaugh, because  Trump has no right to pick his jurists while his administration remains under active investigation. And Kavanaugh is anti-Roe/Wade, anti-environmental and safety regulation, etc.

Let your other Congresscritters know how you feel about current immigration policy, or whatever else is on your mind. Keep the pressure on.

And on the Naked Emperor meme, again, the artists said it all first:

    1. Really nice to reconnect with the familiar faces and getting acquainted with the new ones. I sure enjoyed the conversation (and the brews). Great folks. Thanks for making all the arrangements skinny!

        1. According to the police reports, I had a wonderful time at the meet-up.  Sorry if my rendition of "Moon Over Trump Tower" offended the wait staff and thanks to Karen for posting my bail.

    2. that’s an illuminating article, cook.We have a few Never Trump Republicans on this site – I’d be interested to know  what they think of the article’s premise that they need to stop trying to change their own party , and to focus on broadening the Democratic one.

Yes, the Meetup was fun. Thanks for organizing it.

      1. I read the Never-Trump related article. I think it is difficult to compare the 1850s; also the time of the Know Nothing party & movement; with current times. The issues simply are too different. I also disagree with the author who contends the Dem party of today is center-left. If that was true, there might be a point. But the trend in the Dem party seems to be far-left in orientation. That is not an attraction for Never-Trump conservatives.

Similar topic: the Republican candidate for my state Senate district; an open seat; was walking my street yesterday. I had a pleasant conversation with her. I gave her my priority issues, as a common sense conservative: public lands protection, stopping energy companies from taking over everything, the party's poor positions on womens' reproductive rights, and hope I mentioned renewable energy. She seemed interested in what I had to say. I'll be checking out her web site going forward.

        1. While the "far-left in orientation" positions get a fair amount of air time, I'm having a hard time seeing most Democratic primary winners as "far-left." I couldn't get too worried about the rise of the left in the DeGette/Rao or Crow/Tilleman primaries. I expect I will say the same about the California Senate race.

I keep thinking about the "center" being something like Eisenhower Republicanism. Perhaps you've seen the meme about it, and have read judgments saying it is "mostly true." — https://www.facebook.com/politifact/posts/a-social-media-meme-says/10152772107488433/

There are lots of different measurements saying the Republicans have departed to the further right (albeit with some bizarre exceptions, like Part D coverage). Democrats nationally haven't made a similar hard left turn. For example, the biggest "new" program of the Dems, the ACA, was a Heritage Fdn. idea, tested by a Republican Governor in purple Massachusetts, featuring payments to private insurance companies. TARP and other economic recover programs spent a heck of a lot more on saving industries and banks than the "shovel ready" work projects or expansion of welfare that were direct payments to individuals.

          1. Democrats nationally haven't made a similar hard left turn.

They may not have made a hard left turn but some of them have the left turn signal on. The Free Stuff Agenda is Exhibit A.

Exhibit B is the simplistic solutions to problems. Example: let's abolish ICE. Fine, let's do that but what do you replace it with?

Tammy Duckworth, who is one of the smarter and more rational Democrats, said that the problem isn't the agency per se but the separation policy it is being directed to implement. She's right. But that's complicated and people want slogans and simple solutions.

As for Crowley's loss, I don't think this is the start of Bolsheviks storming the Winter Palace in October/November 1918. Ocasio-Cortez ran an excellent campaign against a guy who took his re-election for granted.

It reminds me of David Brat's defeat of Eric Cantor in the GOP primary. It was supposed to be the beginning of the end for all the others in the GOP leadership. Well, Cantor lost but Ryan, McCarthy, and the rest of the leadership remained.

Don't get me wrong: Pelosi, Hoyer and Clyburn standing together remind me of those photos of the octogenarians on the Politburo standing together during the final days of Brezhnev. They need to move aside and let the younger Dems move up. (Ironically, Crowley was considered one on the younger Dems and he was almost old enough for social security.)

            1. I agree with "Let's abolish ICE" but I believe the message needs to be two-pronged:

              1. Why abolish ICE?  Have reasons and a narrative.

              2. What to replace it with?  How do we enforce checks on them so that they don't go out of control like ICE has?
