DeMint, Club for Growth To Target Norton?

Interesting post over at Rocky Mountain Right, one of the more credible local conservative blogs:

Immediately after the special elections earlier this month, a nationwide conference call of conservative activists across the country was held. The call was put on by RedState.com founder Erick Erickson and Sen. Jim DeMint’s Senate Conservatives Fund. Thounsands of activists participated and the main agenda was getting feedback on which U.S. Senate primaries the group and allied groups should be looking at. The Colorado race was near the top of the list.

It appears that something might actually be coming out of that conference call. Today, the Ken Buck for U.S. Senate campaign is reporting that the Senate Conservatives Fund is looking for feedback from Colorado residents and is encouraging Coloradoans to send messages of support to the group. This would seem to indicate that the Senate Conservatives Fund is edging close to direct intervention in the Colorado senate primary or is at least close to deciding whether to endorse Buck or Tom Wiens.

If the Senate Conservatives Fund becomes involved on behalf of Tom Wiens or Ken Buck, you can bet that other organizations such as the Club for Growth will follow suit. These are the same groups tha are boosting Marco Rubio’s campaign in Florida and could wipe out Jane Norton’s fundraising advantage if they choose. [Pols emphasis]

Club for Growth and friends wouldn’t jump in on the side of fast-fading Ken Buck, but Tom Wiens on the other hand? A very interesting plausibility, and parallels to other races they’re involved in–the insider vs. the “true conservative”–abound.

Stay tuned, this could prove very important.

  1. I read an article in our local paper today about his upcoming visit this Wednesday evening to introduce himself to local voters. In the article, the writer touted Buck’s conservative values and the fact that he had signed the Taxpayer’s Bill of Rights.

And if he thinks he is still in the running, maybe Club for Growth thinks so, too.

  2. Went out from DeMint late last week.

COLORADO – Sen. Michael Bennet (D-CO) was appointed to the seat earlier this year. In just a few months, he’s already voted for over $1 trillion in deficit spending. Bennet has a serious Democratic challenger as well as several Republican challengers. The two most prominent Republicans in the race are former Lt. Governor Jane Norton and Weld County District Attorney Ken Buck. It’s not clear yet which candidate conservatives should support. If you have information about this race, please send us your tips.

The word is that Wiens is working very hard to get on their radar and the next few days are pivotal: Buck’s sorry numbers should help, DeMint’s not going for Norton either way.

  3. Why is it Pols is always in love with whoever most recently announced? I’m going to announce I’m running for something so for a week I can be the upcoming credible threat.

Buck’s not a shooting star by any measure, but he has been solid. Wiens on the flip side hasn’t done anything yet. He may shoot to the top. But he may also never get out of the starting blocks.

    1. Buck hasn’t had very good funs raising numbers. Wiens has said he would be willing to self-fund.

If you ran for something and said you would self-fund your campaign, they would probably give you “credible threat” status.

      1. Most here take the lesson of Jared Polis – which was actually an exception. Few take the example of Ali Hasan – which is the norm.

Ken’s money numbers are low, but not so bad as to rule him out. He needs enough money, supporters, GOTV effort, etc. that in total it beats Norton. He’s still in range.

  4. Jane Norton’s campaign manager is CFG board member Ken Blackwell’s former campaign manager.  And I believe (haven’t double checked) that CFG board member Terry Considine has contributed to Jane.

This doesn’t mean it couldn’t happen, but the odds of CFG coming for Jane Norton are higher than the odds of them supporting an opponent.

  5. TPM was on the call:

DeMint said it will “be a good state for us” to target Sen. Michael Bennet, who was appointed to fill the seat after Ken Salazar was elevated to be Secretary of the Interior. He said the senator is “vulnerable” for backing new government spending.

There are two candidates vying for the nomination in the Aug. 10 primary, former Lt. Gov. Jane Norton and Ken Buck. On the call DeMint and Erickson noted that Norton supported Sen. John McCain for president and has support from the Washington establishment.
