What you can do to fight back this week (May 21)

Another terrible school shooting. Once again the debates over how to stop the carnage of mass shootings begin, the talking heads recite their talking points, and politicians weigh the cost/benefit of saving lives versus pleasing big donors. It’s a sad, predictable cycle that frustrates everyone except those who benefit from the deadly status quo.

We can’t lose hope. The pundits and the politicians haven’t caught up with the American public when it comes to reducing gun violence, but it will not go on forever. Each tragedy in the headlines forces millions of Americans to rethink their views on guns. Every new mass shooting with no action taken after the last one leaves politicians beholden to the NRA, like Colorado’s Sen. Cory Gardner, with blood on their hands. The overwhelming support for concrete steps to reduce gun violence, reduce the death toll in mass shootings, and keep guns out of the hands of the mentally ill and criminals will result in change at the polls.

Thanks again for not giving up, even when the headlines make it tempting. Change is coming.

Community Hug / Counter Protest of Westboro Baptist Church

Westboro Baptist Church has issued a press release that its supporters will be picketing outside Broomfield High. While it may well be within their right to do so, their message does not correlate to the general sense of community of Broomfield. Lets show OUR kids that Broomfield is No Place for Hate and encircle BHS with a big ol’ community HUG!

Wait, that’s Sexist?! A Spotlight On Movement Sexism

In this interactive workshop, we will examine sexism in everyday life. The discussion will include information about, and examples of, common situations where sexism may be present such as sexism in humor, the internalization of gendered stereotypes, essentializing gender difference, benevolent sexism, and the differences between intention and impact of behavior. Equally important we will also discuss how to respond when sexism intrudes in your life and how everyone can contribute to creating a positive culture for addressing oppression and inequality in their everyday lives. Participants should bring an example of sexism that they have seen in their life from the past week.

Denver Food Distro

The Front Range John Brown Gun Club and The Empowerment Solidarity Network along with members of the community will be meeting at Civic Center Park in Denver and then heading out to various locations throughout downtown to pass out food, snacks, water, and toiletries to those in need. We invite anyone who is willing to fill a backpack up with supplies to meet us and help out. We’re also asking for monetary donations, receipts will be posted to show an accounting of all funds.
