From The Denver Post:
Former state Senate President Joan Fitz-Gerald is the new president of America Votes, a national progressive group that she says is “perfect” for the skill set she spent 25 years building.
She started Oct. 15 and already has traveled to various states. America Votes, which was founded in 2003, is a coalition of liberal grassroots, get-out-the-vote groups…
…Fitz-Gerald and her husband, John, are selling their Jefferson County home and are looking for a place to live in the D.C. area. She said she needs to be in Washington, and the couple can’t afford two households.
She plans to visit Colorado as much as possible. One of her two sons still lives here, and America Votes has a Colorado chapter.

I’m glad to see Joan staying in the political sphere.
What say we put Fitz-Gerald in Congress and send Polis to run America Votes? That way, we can get representation that looks more like us (I’m not a billionare. In fact, I share few things in common with Polis) and Polis can say and do all the stupid things he wants!!!!
It’s a win/win for us and Fitz-Gerald.
It’s not a win/win/win because frankly I could care less what happens to Polis once we get him out of office and get a NORMAL democrat in office. A democrat that has earned the trust of the electorate- not one who tries to buy seats!
I feel your pain!! I do, really.
No I don’t. I’m a CD-2 resident and think Jared’s doing as well as any freshman could do. Would JFG have been a more “reliable” “progressive” vote? Probably. So thank god she’s not in there. I want a rep who actually thinks about the issues, not goes off and does whatever Labor tells him/her to do.
I’m not in his district, but I did support his campaign. I agree that he’s being who he is, and I’ve known the Congressman to be a very outside-the-box kind of Democrat.
Our disagreement, however, lies more in political philosophy. I think that Congressional representatives should be more about trying to represent their districts, and less about trying to represent themselves. While there may be many people, like yourself, who benefit directly from Mr. Polis’ position on the health care surtax, the majority of CD-2 probably won’t. You want someone who will break with their party when it coincides with their personal beliefs. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with having that opinion on representative government; I just disagree.
More than anything, though, it’s his willingness to line up with Republicans–quite publicly–on fiscal matters that’s a bit troubling to me, given the overwhelmingly liberal slant of his district. I thought Mark Udall used to do a very good job of finding bipartisan support where it would aid his constituents–things like alternative energy, veteran care, and the environment–whereas Congressman Polis has sought out common ground between himself and his Republican colleagues that is at odds with many Democratic values.
As to the smarmy, childish comment that you were responding to, it’s seems that some people have never really gotten over that primary. Joan Fitz-Gerald, to her credit, obviously has, and I wish her nothing but the best.
but definitely not because I’m in JP’s financial class. I’m one of those entrepreneurs who makes no money and scrapes by, and only puts up with it because I can’t stand the thought of having a boss. 🙂
But don’t mistake: this district is not overwhelmingly liberal. Udall said last year that the right kind of R could win this district and I agree with him. (Udall won his first House race by 2 points.) The People’s Republic gets the attention and is overwhelmingly liberal, but this is a much bigger and more complex district than City of Boulder (there are parts of 10 counties in this district).
As far as lining up with R’s, I don’t have a problem with it. The main person I worked for on the Hill was well-known for it, and it payed results. There is a balance between playing for politics and playing for a win, often they’re out of sync. Lots of politically-aware constituents want to see their Rep playing politics, but the real results only come when you play for wins.
I like Jared, too, and if he has problems with the House Dems’ health care bill, he’s allowed to disagree with the leadership but there are more appropriate ways to voice those criticisms than by teaming up with those two, esp. the clown from Colorado Springs.
.
you’re being sarcastic, right ?
That race was bought and paid for at least as much as the Karzai victory in August in Afghanistan.
Congressman Polis may have been the best choice for CD-02 of the 3 Dems who ran, I’m not qualified to say. I confess that even I endorsed him, despite his position on abortion. I got the impression that he was going to do something about our collective anti-American and illegal reliance on Mercenaries in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Based on what little I know about what he’s done in that area, and in winding down 2 wars that we are losing, I’m disappointed, but I’m pretty sure he must be doing important work out of sight.
But to pretend that a $5 million funding advantage was not the deciding factor is to willfully deceive yourself.
Golly, even I could have won my race with that much money.
.
Does that indicate that there will not be a primary challenger ?
.
…I would ALREADY be in Congress!!!
it takes good looks, too
a freshman Rep, Mr. 435 out of 435 (with seats on Education/Labor and Rules), is going to “do something” about war policy during a war? You’re kidding right? You really thought that was possible? What did you think, he was going to saunter into the White House and con Barack into a top-down change there? Or dial up Robert Gates and demand change and hope that somebody other than the secretary of Gates’s secretary returned the call?
Yes, money helps if the vote is close. But I have never been one that finds a lot of cash wins in certain elections.
I am lazy right now and don’t feel like doing the research, but I am pretty sure more millionaires lose than win. I can name more than a few in Cali who tried and failed.
Jared is interesting. No one said he wasn’t going to piss half of you off half of the time. He will grow into this and he will make big mistakes along way. They all do. Hell, WE ALL DO.
Not sure what was up with the Lamborn thing, even I found that one strange. In bed with the most unimpressive person on earth…
How does the least qualified person in the state get elected? With no money, no brains, no heart, no courage. I guess God and the great OZ do love Lamborn more! I can’t believe I grew up in Colorado Springs. I guess that’s why my stomach hurts every time I go there.
Running a campaign on your own millions statistically is a loser. Very few win doing that.
As to Jared, yes he pisses each of us off at times. But any rep will do that. I also think he’s doing a good job.
She will do well, no doubt.
and as one who has arguably helped established exactly what they are, this ain’t it.
Glad to hear Fitz-Gerald has gotten herself a nice gig.
Now what’s Will Shafroth doing? Looked it up, and apparently he was hired by Ken Salazar to be Deputy Assistant Secretary for Fish, Wildlife and Parks.
Also Alice Madden has a good job.
Trying to figure out what Cindy Carlisle is up to, and Google suggests results for Rollie Heath. I shit you not. That’s a little rude. Anyone know what Carlisle is up to now?
And enjoying life.
Looks like all’s well with the Boulder politicos. Except maybe the ones running for Council, but it’s not like I’ll have any reason to care…
i wanted the job Alice got. 🙂
