No Real Challenge for Udall?

  • by: Colorado Pols

According to the Rocky Mountain News, there are now two Republican candidates running for congress in CD-2 to unseat Rep. Mark Udall, but neither of them would appear to be the kind of candidate to at least cause problems for Udall in 2006. Republicans have no real chance of beating Udall even with a strong candidate, but it was thought that a decent candidate – such as state Sen. Shawn Mitchell – would be recruited to at least make Udall spend some money in 2006 in advance of his 2008 U.S. Senate run. But?maybe?not, according to the News😕

Two Republicans are poised to battle for the right to challenge U.S. Rep. Mark Udall in the 2nd Congressional District – a Democratic stronghold that hasn’t been kind to the GOP in decades. And both say they can win.

Michael Kennedy, an economist and retired aerospace worker, is making his fifth run for the seat, his fourth as a Republican. Rich Mancuso, a history teacher at D’Evelyn Junior and Senior High School in Jefferson County, is running for the first time.

Both face an uphill battle. Udall, seeking his fifth term, is in a district that’s been handily won by Democrats going back to Tim Wirth’s initial victory in 1974.

“I feel really good that there’s a great chance to win,” Kennedy said.

“I think this Republican can win this seat,” Mancuso said. “I really believe in my heart I can do this, or I wouldn’t do it.”

Both are preparing for the May 19 2nd Congressional District Assembly. If each receives at least 30 percent of the votes there, they’ll face off in the Aug. 8 primary for the right to challenge Udall in the Nov. 7 general election.

  1. Mark Udall is also challenged by Joe Calhoun, a journalist from Empire running as a Green Party candidate.  And I’d be surprised if Norm Olsen or another Libertarian doesn’t also run.

Just trying for completeness here–none of these folks will make a dent in Udall’s victory this year.

  2. As we said, Udall wasn’t going to lose no matter who ran against him, but it is a surprise that Republicans aren’t at least going to throw a decent candidate at him to make him spend some of his warchest before 2008.

    …………..

    Well, misery loves company.

After all, look at Hillary! – she’s amassed nearly $20,000,000 and she’s got no real competitor in ’06.  And the funny thing is, she thinks she’s fooling people by being coy about her plans for 2008.  ;^)

  4. I think the fact that no-one serious has stepped up to the plate to give Udall at least a couple of dents in his armor is indicative of the Republican mood for this election.  Normally the national and state GOP would have been all over finding the best challenger in the district to give Rep. Udall at least a hard time so he didn’t look so good going into the ’08 Senate race.

I know!  Maybe they can get Alan Keyes – I understand he’s willing to relocate…

  5. Yeah, but it’s not like Hillary didn’t have a couple of potentials who at least had the background to lay a claim to the position.  It’s just that they all fizzled before they really started.

Udall drew a perennial candidate and a history teacher whose first political statement mis-remembered history – not a good lineup for the GOP, and not one that the national party is likely to spend a dime on.

  6. Yeah, but it’s not like Hillary didn’t have a couple of potentials who at least had the background to lay a claim to the position. It’s just that they all fizzled before they really started.

    ……………….

    Self-defeating argument.
