Race for Democratic AG Nomination Takes New Turn

Democrat Phil Weiser

Democrat Michael Dougherty announced today that he is suspending his campaign for Attorney General in order to focus on securing an appointment as the next District Attorney in Boulder.

The Boulder District Attorney job opened up last month when Stan Garnett announced plans to step down from office to return to the private sector. Garnett will leave the DA’s office on March 1, and Governor John Hickenlooper will appoint his replacement.

Dougherty was one of the top contenders for the Democratic nomination for Attorney General. His departure from the race further cements Phil Weiser’s frontrunner status to take on likely Republican nominee George Brauchler in November.

    1. So what if it is?  Dougherty would make a terrific DA in Boulder and Weiser is a credible candidate for AG.  Where's the memo that says candidates from the same party can't work together to field the strongest slate of candidates?

      1. There are at least two other candidates that I know of who want the job and have history within the Boulder DA's office. As an appointment, it's not really a "take time off to campaign" situation. And if the fix is really in before the appointment is announced, this is a lousy, disrespectful signal to the other candidates.
