Beauprez Campaign Shake-Up?

  • by: Colorado Pols

Rumors are running rampant that Bob Beauprez is making a change at the top of his campaign staff. Reportedly gone is Campaign Manager Jack St. Martin, who officially joined Beauprez’s staff in December. We’re hearing?mixed?answers as to whether?St. Martin quit or was fired, and the official word may come tomorrow (we asked the Beauprez campaign for comment earlier today and have not received a response). Deputy Campaign Manager/Communications Director John Marshall would likely take over the campaign manager duties if St. Martin has indeed left the campaign.

  1. Rumor is indeed rampant about this one.
I heard Jack quit because Holtzman is obviously self funding and BB’s fund raising has hit a wall. So he jumped out before they completely ran out of $$.

  2. Jack probably realized there was no way Beauprez could make it through a Republican primary with Gigi “NARAL” Dennis as his running mate and there would be no way to hide that she was on the ticket until after Aug. 8.

  3. Maybe Beauprez will finally get a message now and get back to the issues.  I think everyone can agree that his wife is a great lady but what about all the other issues the state is facing.

Seriously, is there any truth that Holtzman is self funding or that Beauprez has scandals coming?  Specifics would be nice.

  4. Is this really that big of a deal? I just never felt like the guy ever got his feet on the ground. He was no where as prolific among the active GOPers as most of us here in Colordo are used to (thinking of Wadhams, Atkinson, Tonner and even Fiske). I never met the guy and as far as I know, no one ever saw him in public but once, at the 1st debate.

I think however that this could give us an idea about the general state of the Beauprez Campaign. Despite the rather foolish idea put forward by Katy Atkinson in the Rocky today that Bob is doing so well that he no longer needs to debate Holtzman, the departure of St. Martin seems to suggest a campaign that is failing.

If Bob is doing so well, why fire his Campaign Manager?

On the other hand, why would St. Martin quit if Bob was winning so handily? Better to just cruise along, minimize any personality conflicts or staff problems  and take credit for the win in August.

Instead, once solid Larimer is going to go 50/50 at State, the “no more debates” spin today came off as juvinile and it looks like Bob’s senior hired gun has fled the shooting match.

    Line change is definately required.

  5. Go Marc Go!  Both ways Bob is falling apart!!  The guy needs to return to milking his cows and stop crying about getting beat up during debates.  How pathetic is both ways Bob anyway??

  6. I was on the fence, but I began to favor Holtzman when I found out (on this website) BB’s status as a draft dodger.

It’s too bad that the voters won’t be able to see any more debates before the primary. I think there are a lot of undecideds out there.

  7. Absolutely hilarious. Can you say, “backpedaling”?

Hey, let me be the first to tell you congratulations, John, on your new/old position. This is yet another promotion for you, the second in three months. And what about your press coverage this week? Well, all one can say is you are truly the press master you have always thought you were. Just look at this week’s spectacular performance: Your campaign manager is fired/quits; your helicopter doesn’t get you to assemblies despite several counties changing assembly locations for you; you get no positive press from the assemblies; and now you want to debate Holtzman again. Somebody contact the Public Relations Society of America because John Marshall deserves an award.

And, Jack, thanks for the memories. Although no one ever met you or saw your face, I’m sure someone somewhere will miss you. You did a bang-up job.

    http://www.denverpost.com/news/ci_3695803

  8. Iron Mike, you are one funny dude. Or batch of dudes. Maybe some girls post from the Marc HQ too? Anyway, to all of you – thanks for the laughs. And the logic! The civil debate! That gruff ol’ vet talk really had me going there.

It’s really classy. Much like your boss. That draft dodger. Hang out in Switzerland for a few years until Seymour can bail him out of going to war? I can understand the Army saying you can’t go, but to take a European vacation so you won’t have to? My my… people who live in glass houses shouldn’t throw rocks.

And it’s really funny to hear you go off on Jack and John. And the American Conservative Union. And Senator Allard. Question: if you attack everyone else who endorsed Beauprez, then why do you write speeches for your boss quoting Tom Tancredo? That seems a little funny to me…

  9. Wow… So after a day of crying in the corner we finally hear from “Funny Guy”… At what time is that? 5:30 in the AM? Where you guys boozing it up all night? Or did you just go home early when it was obvious your press stunt had turned into a debacle.

Or did you just post from your office in DC after your first cup of coffee?

I love your Draft Dodger rhetoric about Marc… I’m just not sure the math is on you side. Unless of course you know of a Draft for the Grenada Operation that no one knows about (LOL!).

Anything else you want to add funny guy? Did Marc say something mean about big Bob lately?

  10. I heard that St. Martin is leaving the Beauprez campaign because he found out that Bob was the Anti-Christ and Holtzman is the second Coming of the Lord. St. Martin said to himself, why would I want to take part in the Great Tribulation?

All hail Marc!  He will use his celestial powers to overcome the 20+ point lead that Beauprez has!

FYI – All loyal Holtzman followers who think that posting on this blog will turn the tide of the election – we are drinking Kool-Aid at Marc’s house tonight at 7:00pm, before Hale-Bopp comes to take us home.

  11. Yes Iron Mike.  Funny Guy is about as funny as a hemoroid.  Holtzman, a Draft Dodger?  Hey brainless, where did you go to High School?  The same one as Bob Beauprez?  I’ve got it.  Use that at the next debate.

Have BB suggest that Holtzman dodged the draft.  Make sure BB is, and look very serious.  that way when the crowd is done laughing he won’t be so surprised when the white suits from Pueblo come and take him away.

Can you say, In your world what color do they paint your sky?

  12. No seriously dude. I want to hear about the Draft Dodger stuff. I’m a veteran, this stuff is important to me. Maybe you can convince me he dodged the draft and that I should swear eternal fealty to Both Ways Bob.

By the way… The Holtzman Intern bit is no where near as funny as the “BB Camp” stuff last fall.

  13. This is oh so funny when the ‘ol vet Iron Mike speaks! I forgot that Marc Holtzman was too young to have faced the draft. He was still in Pennsylvania watching Ronald Reagan on TV and learning how to run a business from Papa Seymour. But… then the business failed. And did he really work for Ronald Reagan in the West Wing like he says? Anyway, beside the point… I’m sorry, my mistake.

So is Papa Seymour teaching him how to run a political campaign too? Scorched earth and take no prisoners? When you don’t even live in the state where you campaign, who can blame him if he doesn’t care what the damage is?

I think Colorado Republicans actually want a proven leader – a Colorado leader – to be their governor, and someone who knows what he stands for as well. That’s why Bob Beauprez is going to win this nomination.

But anyway, thanks for writing back. Glad to see the interns are back on their watch!

  14. Oh my God, I just read that article in the Post… Sure it’s Colorado’s Pravda, but Marshall, can you try not to sound like a complete and total idiot?

“There were disagreements among the staff. Jack’s a class act and professional and put the campaign’s interests first,” said spokesman John Marshall, who is replacing St. Martin as campaign manager.”

Translation: Jack was a jerk, it took me three months to back stab that guy out of this office, but we have a confidentiality agreement so no one will ever know.

…and then the part about debating Holtzman… So I guess when Katy Atkinson said for you that, “My guess is if (the Beauprez campaign) is saying ‘no debates’ they have polling data saying they have no problems,” said GOP political consultant Katy Atkinson. “If you’re way ahead, you have nothing to win and everything to lose from debating. It gives your opponent exposure.” … Well, she was just kidding. But hey, I’m sure she doesn’t mind laying her reputation on the line for you guys.

  15. Iron Mike–
“On the other hand, why would St. Martin quit if Bob was winning so handily?”
    —————————————————————————-
Kind of the same question everyone was asking when Dirk left.  Kind of the same question I have now that Liggett is searching for other employment.  Kind of the same question I am asking after seeing several key supporters and county chairs jump off the Holtzman ship.

  16. For some reason all that I can picture in my mind is something from Brokeback..  ” wish I could quit you”.  My goodness it is going to be a long day.

  17. The only saving grace of the Beauprez Campaign is that they ran the “No More Debates” message through the Rocky and the “of course we’ll debate” retraction through the Post. Not everyone reads both.
Still when a political campaign has to switch their messaging like this in one 24 hour period, combined with the loss of the senior manager… that is usually a sign of bad things. Like a campaign that is in a spinning nose dive… Can anyone say Howard Dean?
This time last year, I swore Beauprez was going to be our next Governor. Today, I am seriously considering taking bets on whether they will fold tents prior to State Assembly. Seriously.
If BB can make it to assembly, I do still believe he will get top line. But close observation of his campaign is like watching some teen slasher movie, where you see the characters taking a high risk action (you know, going out in the woods alone when the ski masked killer is on the loose) that you know is stupid, could certainly result in failure, and as you watch, it does.
Case in point is Bob’s helicopter this last weekend: The plan was to have Bob land at the assembly locations. This is a good move… Very impressive, very gubernatorial, big show for the delegates. Why the prop wash alone says “Governor”.
I guess they had to change the Pueblo County Assembly location so Bob could land the helicopter on site, but then they failed to do all of the coordination to make it happen. Result, I’m sure they spent plenty of money (if only for the fuel) but no big photo op or eye-candy moment for the delegates. All the talk leading up to the different assemblies of Bob showing up in a helicopter and making Marc look foolish, just failed. Instead everyone was left feeling like Bob was the one with egg on his face… Like I say, the campaign is like a bunch of teenagers walking into the arms of Freddy Kruger.
Anyhow, I have seen this before many times in the Army and quite a few times since getting into business, the Beauprez Campaign is in the fog: People are unhappy even when things are being accomplished, everything seems harder than it should be and given the shakeup in leadership, they may be in a situation where no one is exactly sure who works for who. It is an immensely stressful situation, where even the simple tasks are hard and everything seems to take twice as long. Sound like combat? It kinda is.
The Holtzman Camp on the other hand is performing. Their mail is going out on time and hitting in a timely manner (I guess their Reagan piece hit a day late in El Paso, but Beauprez’s Allard Caucus letter hit two weeks after caucuses here in Douglas), Leggit is managing the press so well that the DEM press is starting to wonder if Holtzman really is the easy Republican to beat in November and they are doing robo dials to have the Governor sign bills that match their agenda for Christ’s sakes.
Like I say, this is Holtzman’s time. With the loss of Jack St. Martin, I seriously wonder if the Beauprez Campaign can get their act together for State Assembly. I don’t think they are going to make it.

  18. […] The Rocky Mountain News has more on a story we first reported yesterday: Bob Beauprez’s campaign manager left the Republican congressman’s campaign for governor after just three months on the job, a spokesman for Beauprez said Monday. […]

“Kind of the same question everyone was asking when Dirk left. Kind of the same question I have now that Liggett is searching for other employment. Kind of the same question I am asking after seeing several key supporters and county chairs jump off the Holtzman ship.”

This would be quite the stinging criticism except for a couple things:

    1) Dirk LEFT LAST SUMMER! And he left to run his own gig in a run for Congress instead of playing second fiddle to Leggit.

    2) You need to double check your rumor mills buddy… News of Leggit’s departure was a hot item in January when he had some watered down version of bird flu and was coughing up a lung instead of attending political events. He seems to be better now and ah, he’s not the one in the press release.

    3) “several key supporters and county chairs”… Like who? Come on smart guy, name some names.

And please feel free to entertain us with any tails of draft dodging that you know of.

  20. Well Rock 5 wrote quite the political tome there.

I don’t know Rock… I would love to see them fold up shop before the Convention, but I just don’t see it happening. There is too much arrogance, too much hubris in that campaign. Their office could burn down around them and they’d see it as a sign to go get an RV as well.

Arm Billstrong – Interesting idea Senator, could you go into that a little more? How did Ritter’s numbers effect St. Martin again?

  21. Iron Mike-
Mel Hilgenberg comes to mind.  Bo Cottrell comes to mind.  Not to mention the lack of Holtzman enthusiasm from Mark Fauth as of late.  Mel is now a solid Beauprez supporter.  Bo, much like Dirk seemed to have found an easy out by working for another campaign.  Mark, I think is discouraged because he is one of the only Holtzman supporters north of Boulder.

  22. When Mel Hilgenberg leaves a campaign it is not a loss. That guy is a scumbag. Yeah, someone you really want on your team. You guys have fun with him.

As far as Bo goes, I would not write him off as a BB supporter yet kids…

Don’t know Mark Fauth well enough to comment.

  23. ROFL!

“…lack of Holtzman enthusiasm from Mark Fauth as of late”, oh my that is funny. I gave him a call and told him about this one. We’re still laughing about it.

I have no clue who Mel is, and didn’t know Bo had jumped ship… Oh well, Bo and I didn’t see eye to eye in 2004 either.

Hang on, maybe this is something we do want going around… Yeah, yeah that’s the ticket. Mark Fauth is just not as excited about Marc anymore. Yeah, he hasn’t been doing anything for Holtzman this last month… He’s been just sitting around with me and my wife Morgan Fairchild, yeah.

  24. Iron Mike,

Don’t forget to bring $2.25 in quarters and a buddy to hold you down in case you don’t want to drink the Kool Aid.  (I suggest Rock 5).

I will see you guys tonight!

  25. The House Of Representatives Calendar shows the week of April 10, 2006, as a “Spring District Work Period”:

    http://majoritywhip.house.gov/calendar.asp?month=4&year=2006&TextMode=

Doesn’t that mean Congressman Beauprez should be working in Congressional District 7 for his constituents, instead of showing up in Monte Vista and Westcliffe, Colorado on  gubernatorial stops today, as indicated on his beaupresforgovernor.com blog??

Are the constituents of CD 7 getting their money’s worth from BB??

  26. Wow Deputy Dog, you sure dug up a big nugget there.  Perhaps Bob should refund one day’s salary back to the taxpayers.  Oh yeah, and while we’re at it, ask Marc to agree to repay the 300K per year “salary” he received in Eastern Europe direct from the taxpayers.

But, I guess it evens out considering at least Colorado was at least accurately billed for Marc’s service as technology secretary, which was $ 1 a year. You get what you pay for.

  27. Hey, look everyone the BB Camp got out of their “Exit Strategy” meeting.

Tonner must have given his world famous “You Guys Are Idiots” speech ’cause it looks like they are ready to rumble.

  28. No, Iron Mike, I’m just someone watching your repeated mouth frothing all over this site when Holtzman scores a perceived point.  When Marc shits the bed (and he does a lot) you are notably silent from this website.  Damn, Marc must be happy to have you on his team.

  29. My dear “then answer this too”, you are beyond clueless.
There is nothing that has been said on this website in the last week that Holtzman needs to address. There is nothing to defend. We have heard all of the hits against him before (like the $300 he earned in a private business, it was the organization that staked him where execs could only earn $150K/year) and they are all BS.

You guys think that if you keep repeating all the same old BS (you know, the stuff Bob used to have on his boots) that people will start to believe it. Well they won’t. Yesterday two of the most prolific conservative posters on this site, Go Raiders and the Plumber came on board and stated they were supporting Holtzman. We didn’t make a big deal of it, but you know what, it happened.

Let’s see did anything new happen with Beauprez? Why yes, let me count them up:

    1) BB says he’s not going to debate Holtzman anymore.

    2) Beauprez fired his Campaign Manager and then tried to cover it up for a week.

    3) BB’s new CM states that those know nothings at the Rocky got him all wrong and he never said BB would not debate again. We all just need to be civil.

So me and my mouth frothing don’t need to say much about Marc… He’s doing okay by me. I suppose he may or may not be too happy to have me on board… But I’m pretty proud to be supporting him.

But hey, let’s talk about you… Are you still happy to be on the Bobby B team? Are you proud of your guy? He was a draft dodger you know.

  30. All hail Marc, the seer of seers, the prognosticator of prognosticators.

Wait, isn’t that Punxsutawney Phil?  Oh, well they look almost the same.

  31. I’m not on the Bobby B team, but in your world anyone who thinks Marc is a dick is.  No sense arguing that one with you.

How is Marc’s $ 300K a year salary “BS”? Are you saying it isn’t true, or just too much Kool Aid today?

Calling for civility in a debate, and not partipating unless a certain participant, ahem, promises to behave is far different than saying I won’t debate.  It is a condition of participation.  Most people can grasp that.

Wow, 2 more voters for Marc.  That’s an achievement to say the least.  Only a couple million more needed.  Holtzman all the way!

  32. “I’m not on the Bobby B team, but in your world anyone who thinks Marc is a dick is.”….

    Wait a minute… “I’m not on his team”, “he’s a dick”… I know this guy! Shamus!

How you doing old buddy? Why you had us going there for a second man… We thought you were a critical thinking GOPer or something, now we see you for the liberal troll monkey we know and love. Why you using the funky handle bro? Don’t be ashamed of who you are man.

Anyhow, what inane point were you trying to make again?

  33. Unfortunately I have some bad news this year. My shadow tells me Colorado will experience six more weeks of carpetbagging from that obnoxious rich kid from Philly, but after that we’re clear.

  34. You got me Mike. I’m Shamus. If that makes you feel better I’ll go with it.  You got me real good.

Nice deflection of the question though.  By saying it’s “crap” are you saying Marc didn’t receive $ 300K from this taxpayer funded boondoggle?  What is your answer?  Cough it up.

  35. Jesus, you dumb fuckers are stupid. It’s spelled “Seamus”, not Shamus.
    Get spell check dummies.

    Yours in Physical Fitness Phreedom,

    Bob Beauprez

  36. Kan someoone Tel faaarmer Bob he are an idiot pleaz??  Both ways Bob is the best name anyone could ever have given the poor guy.

Yesterday: no more debates.  Today: yes of course I will debate.

What is he? A twin of John Kerry?  A fake republican for sure.

Marc 2006 all the way!  Forget both wayzzzzzzzz bob.

  37. Wow – What a great Kool-Aid party last night at the Holtzman Campaign. Who new that Teal could bong a gallon of Kool-Aid ata a time? Fortunatley the Kool-Aid was only spiked with animosity toward the Beauprez Campaign.

Now for today’s marching orders –

    1) Even though the Holtzman campaign is down by 15+ points please play up that every single delegate to the state assembly has already promised to vote for Marc.

    2) Remember, every registered voter in the state of Colorado reads political blogs every day, so make sure you make Beauprez’s campaign team look bad – and Rock 5 please remember to be demeaning because that get us lots of votes

    3) When a Beauprez supporter actually has the nerve to respond our attacks be sure to call them a shill, because everyone who supports Beauprez is a shill, right?

    4)  make sure to make fun of the spelling of Beauprez supporters – that will get us a a ton of extra votes.

    All hail Marc!

  38. You are so right Rock 5!  By the end of the week every voter in Colorado will know that some staffers have left the Beauprez Campaign, because they all read political blogs, and that will finally allow Marc to make up 20+ points he is down.

Marc is well on the way to victory and world domination!!

  39. Bad Press,

You are right.  Every single voter in Colorado is going to remember these three days of bad press for Bob and they are all going to decide to vote for Marc instead.

The Beauprez Campaign is finished because of some bad press!!
