Udall, Bennet Join Moderate Caucus Thingy

by: Colorado Pols

Wed Mar 18, 2009 at 15:53:40 PM MDT

Democratic Sens. Mark Udall and Michael Bennet announced today in a joint press release that they are now officially part of a moderate working group/coalition/thingy called "The Moderate Dems Working Group." According to the announcement:

The Moderate Dems Working Group will meet every other Tuesday before the Democratic Caucus lunch to discuss legislative strategies and ideas. The Moderate Dems held their second meeting Tuesday to focus on the upcoming budget negotiations and the importance of passing a fiscally responsible spending plan in the Senate.

Leading the new group are Democratic Senators Evan Bayh of Indiana, Tom Carper of Delaware and Blanche Lincoln of Arkansas...

...Others joining the group are Senators Mark Udall and Michael Bennet of Colorado, Mark Begich of Alaska, Kay Hagan of North Carolina, Herb Kohl of Wisconsin, Mary Landrieu of Louisiana, Joe Lieberman of Connecticut, Claire McCaskill of Missouri, Ben Nelson of Nebraska, Bill Nelson of Florida, Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire, and Mark Warner of Virginia.

Perhaps predictably, this announcement led to much pooping of pants among die-hard liberal bloggers throwing around words like "traitors." We don't consider the word "moderate" to be either scary or dirty, so we're willing to give Udall and Bennet the benefit of the doubt for awhile on this. But at the same time, we're a little puzzled by the reasoning behind this maneuver by Udall and Bennet.

Colorado Pols :: Udall, Bennet Join Moderate Caucus Thingy
First off, Udall is looking more and more like he's trying to be Ken Salazar, who began his freshman session as a Senator by joining the "Gang of 14" and doing a bunch of other moderate stuff. That worked well for Salazar, because as we pointed out repeatedly, it wasn't all that different from the type of person that Salazar always was. Salazar was always a moderate, he ran for election to the Senate as a moderate, and he began his term in a much different political climate for Democrats.

Now Udall is a lot of things, but he's not Ken Salazar, and he never will be. Udall was never a moderate as a congressman, but now he seems to be bending over backwards to remake himself into something he quite clearly is not. We've heard rumors, in fact, that Udall has generally avoided in-person meetings with many of the environmental folks that helped make him a Congressman and a Senator...and all so that he can make people think he's a moderate.

So why is this so puzzling? Because Udall just won an election by double freaking-digits by being Mark Udall -- not by being this new pretend moderate guy. Democrats won sweeping victories in 2008 with a clear progressive mandate from voters, but now Udall wants to remake himself into something different? What the hell for?

As for Bennet, he has more reason to try to define himself as a moderate - since he's never even been elected yet - but before he does that he needs to take some time to define himself as a Democrat, lest he get himself a difficult primary fight. He would be wise to polish up the ol' Democratic credentials before making himself into 'Moderate Guy.'

Bennet may very well turn out to be Captain Moderate, but that won't be worth two rusty nickels in a Democratic primary. And if he's worried about "the business community" in a general election, well, Udall's election showed us last fall that this scary wives-tale has already been debunked.

So while we don't understand Udall and Bennet's attempts to re-classify themselves, we'll give them the benefit of the doubt until the important votes come down. Because at the end of the day, all of this moderate coalition nonsense won't protect them if they make the wrong decisions on important Democratic votes like health care reform, Employee Free Choice and climate change. Hiding yourself in the "moderate caucus" in order to cast votes against your Democratic constituency isn't going to fool anyone.

Udall isn't the only...
name on that list that doesn't fit the "Moderate" label very well.  Herb Kohl?  Not quite....  Claire McCaskill?  Don't think so.  Jeanne Shaheen?  Not really...

"But when I see a 9-11 victim family on television, or whatever, I'm just like, 'Oh, shut up!' I'm so sick of them because they're always complaining."  Glenn Beck

Udall always seemed pretty moderate
Udall has always seemed pretty moderate to me.  I know the repubs always called him a "Boulder liberal" but he has annoyed the real liberals for a long time.  He isn't Salazar (happily) but he's always voted for war funding and such.

Political moderation
is not the same as ideological/policy moderation. Political moderation, which is what this is, is all about "appearing" centrist by making random concessions to the other party.

This IS something to be reviled because it leads to really bad policy. There is plenty of good policy that falls between opposing ideologies, but I've rarely seen these so called moderates or centrists pursue it or make a logical argument in favor of it.

"One of the marks of a certain type of bad man is that he cannot give up a thing himself without wanting everyone else to give it up." - C.S. Lewis

You seem to think that "Democrat" cannot mean "moderate"
I thought the Dems had a lot of moderates in the party, and for that reason have recently won elections to stuff.  I don't think that calling oneself a moderate casts doubt on one's credentials as a Democrat. And I think a lot of moderate Dems vote in the primary (see Salazar's trouncing of Mike Miles even tho the liberals gave Miles a victory at the state assembly).  But I'm a middle of the road, go along to get along kind of person, I guess.

Also, I thought Udall portrayed himself as a moderate to win the senate race.  So he may be giving the public what they voted for.

Well, nowadays that's right . . .
Except for a handful of Democrats in the House, the Democrats in Congress have been marching uniformly down Obama lane -- the farthest Left agenda in the history of the nation.  It will cost the party at the polls in 2010, but in the meantime, the country that we love is their victim.

Please give details and evidence
of this "victimization" of the United States under the lawfully and duly elected President and Congressional representation. And why do you blame Democrats specifically? Why are they so bad? No one ever really answers this question. All I get are insults and baseless insinuations. If just ONE of you actually put up evidence (and no, Drudge Report and The O'Reilly Factor don't qualify), then I would gladly listen. Until that happens, I can't take you seriously.

If you actually respond to this, without a single insult and with genuine evidence that Democrats are willfully engaging in activities that violete the Constitution or any applicable laws, I urge you to post said evidence here and share it with the proper authorities.

Right, a 'bloodbath'
I think you called it, based on 'poll after poll' (although you only posted one that was a 'generic' GOP v a 'generic' Dem).

You're funny.  But I'm not laughing with you.

wow.
Okay, here's a joke I heard from a bunch of wierd people in a pub in Wales, while a warewolf was out ravaging the countryside: AS, Libertad, and KK were on a plane together. The pilot said: "We've got engine trouble, so we need to dump all excess weight to make the plane as light as possible." So they dumped everything out that they could. A few minutes later, the pilot said, "No, we still have too much weight. Someone has to sacrifice himself for the good of the rest." They all looked at each other, broke out into gaffaws at the thought of it, and fought hopelessly all against all, each one trying to throw the others out, yelling "Damn socialist!" and "Commie Pinko!" as they did so. Meanwhile, the plane plummetted into the sea, and all three disappeared never to be seen or heard from again....

We're all in this story together: Let's make sure that we write it well.

"the farthest Left agenda in the history of the nation."
So, your historical knowledge doesn't go back to the 1930's, eh?

Not surprising.

FDR saved capitalism's ass, you know. Obama will probably do likewise.

Do you remember the nation's reaction to FDR's policies?  I thought not. FOUR elections, Americans kept supporting his programs.

You need to get some education.

Yes, which is why educated people trend towards liberalism.
It's not just those pinko commie socialist Ward Churchill's, it's when you put all the history together, it's inevitably slogging towards liberalism. And you learn that history, and critical thinking from being educated.

It's a reason so many cons are against education.  They lose political power when the population is educated.

There may be a more pragmatic reason...
Udall and Bennett are both freshmen Senators near the bottom of the seniority list. With such a big Democratic majority in the Senate, Udall and, especially, Bennett can be easily taken for granted by the party leadership. Joining a so-called moderate caucus, ill-defined as it may be-gives them greater political leverage than simply sucking up to the majority leaders.

I don't find this surprising from Udall
His efforts for the last 2 years, the election, and since becoming a Senator have all revolved around one single tenent - hugging the middle as tightly as possible. Taking a sensible looks at all sides of an issue and then generally being somewhat moderate is reasonable for a Senator from this state.

What's worrisome about Udall is not that he is moderate, but why he is. If it's all just political positioning to insure that he has a nice job and title for the next N years then he isn't going to do much for the country.

Maybe he was a moderate all along
And just pretended to be liberal to get elected in CD-2?

I think he was always a moderate
The moderation doesn't bother me. I'm a moderate much of the time. What bothers me is he appears to have no anchor other than keep Mark Udall in office. If nothing else matters to him then he isn't going to accomplish anything of note.

Tea party support in the primary.

Isn't staying in office
apparently the primary job of the vast majority of politicians?  I don't see Udall exactly standing out in the crowd on that basis.

My mom spoils me
During session she is all about what she can accomplish and making Hawaii better. Then come election time she stresses like crazy over her votes, statements, etc that went against the prevailing mood... And gets 78% of the vote.

Her constituents love her (except for the bat-shit crazies on both the right & left) and I think a lot of that is because they know she's true to her beliefs and she works her ass off.

Udall & Bennet want that level of support more than anything - and will never get it because that is clearly what they are striving for. It's called Karma.

When did Libermann decided to declare as a Democrat???
What these Senators all have in common is that they are from newly blue states....face possible tough reelection campaigns....making a strategic move...I don't have a problem with that....let's them negotiate with Nancy and Reed...steal the thunder from the repubs....

I say, let's see what happens.

As for Bennet and Udall...shouldn't they just get a room?

Lieberman caucuses with the Dems
which is why he can join in an ad hoc Dem group.  I also think that he is still a registered Democrat even though he did not run for election as the Democratic party's nominee.

[ Parent ]
I know he caucuses with dems
But, I think he is a registered Independent. He worked for McCain's election...and has the option of not caucusing with the Dems...

[ Parent ]
What? Of course Udall is 100% Moderate......
His former constituency is Bould....I mean Eldorado Springs, where he lives (at least for the last 2 years of his 10 year term), and supported Dennis Kucinich's (OH-10) Dept. of Peace, which is designed to replace the inadequate State Deptartment.  He isn't blue, but purple.

I see nothing wrong with consensus building or compromise
I guess that makes me a moderate.

Life changed me from my youth.

How about a 5 trillion tax cut for the upper 1% that's borrowed from China  and then invested in China? The Republican platform has legs.

Seriously Pols? You too?
You think there was some "clear progressive mandate"? This has been your tune for as long as I can remember. Moderates win statewide in Colorado. Udall's win was a blowout because a) it was a bad year to be a republican in general due to a wildly unpopular war and tanking economy; b) his opponent was bat-shit crazy and pretty much incompetent in all regards; and most importantly, c) Udall was the ultimate Colorado moderate.

Udall did not run, at any point over the past year, as anything other than Moderate Mark, to the chagrin of many polsters here, so I don't see why it should be a surprise that he is now caucusing as a moderate.

The fact that he is refusing to see his past enviro backers is wack, people knew that was his background when they elected him, but again, he ran as the moderate, not the environmentalist. And in the end, all this moderate caucus thing really does is enhance his bipartisan cred, so who cares?

Udall was always a moderate
The liberal tag was hung on him by Wadhams and stuck. But he's not liberal. He's a moderate, and votes with his finger in the air. Not good or bad, just the way it is. I knew this going in.

In fact, I did a small amount of campaigning for him last fall. I canvassed down in CD6. (If the area around Alameda and Simms to Wadsworth and Jewell is indeed CD6).

I did this not because I thought he was that great a candidate, but because the alternative was infinitely worse. Udall's vote as Congress. Rep CD2 on FISA (same as the President's) was definitely not liberal. He voted for every "emergency troop funding" bill. (Incidentally, as a Democrat, and for practical purposes, I agreed with him on both).

Colorado is simply not a state where a radical from either side can win any more. (Of course, CD6 might be an exception, based on the reception I got while canvassing). Udall is wavering on EFCA, and I won't be shocked if he votes against it if it hits the floor.

If he's really one of these "lieberdems", I will be disappointed. But not surprised. I want President Obama's economic plan to go forward and I want it to work. He won the popular vote by 9 and a half million votes and carried Colorado comfortably. He has a mandate. But Udall is thinking "purple" instead of "blue". And he's not up in 2010. Every vote's going to be a nail biter with him.

But, like I said, he's infinitely better than Bob Schaffer.

The reception you got

Name a recent Democratic Senator the left really liked
Campbell was a traitor, pushed out of his own party (he says) by the unreasonableness of its left wing....

Salazar was always too independent and mavericky. The cowboy hat and bolo thing-people in Boulder and Park Hill just don't dress that way...

Udall--is he betraying his liberal CD-2 heritage by tacking to the middle with his coyness around such litmus test issues as EFCA?  And now this moderate dem caucus thing...

Bennett's sin? Ritter didn't ask for permission and he's not Andrew Romanof..

The state is not as blue as the left would like to believe. The Mike Miles contingent needs to get over it.

Thanks, Dave and thanks, Cologeek.  I remember when I ran for office against an incumbent Democrat in Hawaii.  I was pro-choice. He had started Hawaii right-to-life. I was an environmental attorney. He was a corporate attorney.  I won, but not by a big margin.
I remember walking the halls of the State Capitol, feeling the awe and responsibility to do a good job.  And I said to myself, I get these two years to stand up for those things I believe in and to work hard every day. And, at times, to make unpopular choices, even though demonstrating crowds are trying to change my vote.
It has been an incredible privilege.  I recommend to those of you on ColoradoPols to consider running for office---maybe starting with a local position---and then working up.  And keeping true to your beliefs.
