SpongeDob Resigns as FOF Chairman

by: Colorado Pols

Fri Feb 27, 2009 at 14:20:23 PM MST

Focus on the Family leader James "SpongeDob" Dobson has resigned his post, according to The Associated Press:

Conservative evangelical leader James Dobson has resigned as chairman of Focus on the Family but will continue to play a prominent role at the organization he founded more than three decades ago, The Associated Press has learned.

Dobson notified the board of his decision Wednesday, and the 950 employees of the Colorado Springs, Colo.-based ministry were informed Friday morning at a weekly worship service, said Jim Daly, the group's president and chief executive officer.

Dobson, 72, will continue to host Focus on the Family's flagship radio program, write a monthly newsletter and speak out on moral issues, Daly said.

Dobson's resignation as board chairman "lessens his administrative burden" and is the latest step in a succession plan, the group said. Dobson began relinquishing control six years ago by stepping down as president and CEO.

Prop 8 and Tax Exemption
Look for a link between FoF laying off workers at the same time as spending on Prop 8, and possible loss of tax exemption.

Americans United has a press release out now.

The Rev. Barry W. Lynn, executive director of Americans United for Separation of Church and State, issued the following statement:

"James Dobson's decision to resign as chairman of Focus on the Family is unlikely to make much of a difference in the day-to-day operations of that organization. Dobson intends to continue his daily radio program and monthly mailings. He has also said he will keep handing out political endorsements. Many who listen to Dobson's daily radio broadcast may not even be aware of this change.

"Focus on the Family is merely rearranging the deck chairs on its big, intolerant ship.

ever notice how in many instances these types of announcements of long serving company and organization leaders stepping down precede the entire organization going out of business?

No.
Care to provide some examples? Focus on the Family isn't going anywhere.

I beg to differ
They make all their money on selling Dobson's books and tapes.

It's a cult of personality centered on one person.

Here's a recent example:

For that matter, how many other cults of personality still have high-profile organizations after their front man has retired or died?

They're not buying Dobson
they're buying the message. Dobson can be replaced with someone else with similar views, and the cashflow will still be a tidy sum.

Dobson's replacement is Lt Gen (USAF Ret) Pat Caruana
Pat is an outstanding and extremely well respected individual.  I can't help but think that you will see FOTF take a more reasoned approach to matters.

Don't get your hopes up
From Mr. Caruna:

"I don't see any dramatic departure from what Focus stands for," Caruana said of Dobson's leaving the board. "There are obviously younger people the ministry would like to reach, and we're on track to do that."

I've known Pat for close to 20 years
I'll stand by my comment.
