Springs Gazette: Don't Vote, Stupid Democrats

by: Colorado Pols

Tue Nov 04, 2008 at 07:25:32 AM MST

It's often-repeated charge that Republicans consciously prefer fewer people voting. That's a pretty serious accusation in a democracy, and it's no surprise that Republicans routinely deny it.

Unless you're the editorial board of the Colorado Springs Gazette, which is apparently under no obligation to sugar-coat stuff like that. The GOP is likely to lose big today as everybody knows, but if that happens it's the fault of stupid, ill-informed voters who shouldn't be voting anyway:

Record numbers of citizens have been registered throughout the country. They've been handed pens and told to sign on the dotted line. Organizations such as Rock the Vote and

Get out the Vote encourage voting by people who are otherwise disinclined to vote.

Expect to see colleagues wearing "I voted" stickers, promoting voting like they would promote giving blood.

"Rock the Vote's mission is to engage and build the political power of young people in order to achieve progressive change in our country," states the organization's Web site.

Get Out the Vote's site says: "If you don't vote ... you don't count."

That isn't true. Traditionally, about half of Americans eligible to vote have opted to stay home. They very much play a role in improving the quality of our election results, and they do count...

People who don't vote play a positive role by not polluting election results with ill-informed decisions. [Pols emphasis]

Elections serve this country well, but only when the electorate is knowledgeable of the likely causes and effects of their decisions. Well-informed voters are people who have studied their ballots, followed the news, and informed themselves about the workings of their communities, their country and the world. By voting, they make the country strong.

Ill-informed voters, by contrast, do themselves and their country a giant favor by respectfully declining to vote. It requires no apology, no explanation. It's the noble, righteous and patriotic choice.

Of course, there is a grain of truth to the idea that voters should take the time to understand clearly the issues and candidates they're voting for. And all of us have expressed frustration with the will of the electorate at one time or another. But as any consistent reader of the Gazette's editorials can tell you, the only side they consider "ill-informed" is the Democratic one--and you betcha, Republicans would consider any Democrat's decision to "decline to vote" "noble, righteous and patriotic."

Most other times, this might pass as a reasonable appeal for voters to get informed. Published on Election Day, it's a pathetic and intellectually fraudulent attempt to debase the likely results.

Ill informed presumably meaning Democratic voters vs...
..well informed Republican voters that believe Obama is a Muslim, will take away your guns, make America a Muslim nation, and rape all your white women.

Thom Hartmann often (too often)plays an audio snippet of Paul Wehrlich (???) telling a church audience that encouraging people to vote is bad for conservatives.  Paraphrased, "The fewer people that vote, the better we do."

But going to the other side of the coin, this is why I think mandatory voting is such an incredibly bad idea.  I want only the people who care, even if ill informed, to vote.

"Collective fear stimulates herd instinct and tends to produce ferocity toward those who are not regarded as members of the herd." -Bertrand Russell

Funny...
I thought liberals were the elitists.

"But when I see a 9-11 victim family on television, or whatever, I'm just like, 'Oh, shut up!' I'm so sick of them because they're always complaining."  Glenn Beck

I'm Not Surprised
Really when you look at the history of candidates and parties who run on an anti-elitist platform they're usually the richer, snobbier candidate. For example "log cabin" Harrison who was born into a prominent political family on the Berkeley Plantation in Virgina. So much for the log cabin.

Wow.
I don't know why I am surprised by that but I seriously can't believe they would write that. That's just so shitty and petty. Whatever happened to the appearance of being unbiased?

"The only way you could be worse is if you were Wade Norris." Ralphie

It is shitty and petty
and probably the dumbest fucking article of the year.

" And there are no Christian terrorists."

Who knew?
Alexander Hamilton is alive and well and writing for the Gazette.

Colorado Springs has brought us such enlightened ideas and people
such as Wil Perkins, Amendment 2, Doug Bruce, TABOR, Doug Lamborn.  Yeah, they're a smart bunch of well informed voters, for sure.

Artually, I agree with the Gazette in the sense
that anyone who reads and agrees with the Gazette's editorials really ought not to vote!

How about these?
I'm surprised the Gazette left off these questions, thought up by my friend Ernest Lunning:

* Is Barack Obama a Muslim, a follower of the hateful Rev. Wright, or both?
* True or false: Eldorado Springs is inside the Boulder city limits.
* Why would Betsy Markey agree to allow Marilyn Musgrave's campaign to film her taking a lie detector test?
* Does Bob Schaffer drive a Prius?
* Does Barack Obama love his country as much as you do?

Lest you think the Gazette WANTS voters to be well-informed,
.
as they seem to imply,
they promised to print one 700-word essay from my campaign this election cycle,
so voters would know about the third choice before casting their ballot.

I submitted it before they said it was due.

It hasn't run yet.  I expect to see it run tomorrow or later this week.

.

On the other hand,
Doug Lamborn gets 700 words printed in the editorial section just for the asking.
He got at least three spots in the Op-ed section this season that I know of.
Last weekend he had 700 words to advocate drilling our way out of energy dependence.
As if voters didn't know he was running.
.
.

There's a line
between wanting voters to be well informed, and discouraging those are not from voting.

This is Democracy, you can vote for or against anyone because of anything.
