CD-2 candidate Jared Polis endorsed presidential candidate Barack Obama today at a rally in Boulder, taking a (small) risk by picking a side in the (nominally) undecided race for the Democratic nomination ahead of his opponents. Press release follows, with Obama's first name misspelled "Barrack."

POLIS ENDORSES OBAMA FOR PRESIDENT
Announcement made at nationwide Nation for Change! event in Boulder

BOULDER, CO -- Jared Polis today announced his endorsement of Senator Barrack Obama for President, citing a need for a true progressive voice in Washington and a leader who is willing to put party politics aside in the best interest of the nation.

"We have a unique opportunity to make real, positive change," said Polis during his remarks at the rally, which included state officials and local Obama for America supporters.

"It is time to change the direction of this country and instill again the true values of democracy where it does not matter how much money you have in your pocket or how much influence you have in your community, your children deserve a quality education, you deserve proper and affordable health care, you deserve a roof over your head and protection for you and your family from the government.

"America deserves a change and Senator Obama is the light that will show us the way. It is time for superdelegates across the nation to step-up and throw their support behind the candidate of their choice. It's time for a nominee to start taking on John McCain.

"I know that political advisors would tell me to stay out of it, it's too risky, don't endorse anyone until the nominee is decided. But I am willing to take that risk and throw my support behind who I think is the best candidate to lead the Democratic Party and, ultimately, the nation toward positive change."

Nice work Jared
This is a very smart move on his part. By endorsing Obama, Polis has opened the door to win over many of the Senator's supporters, volunteers and donors.

Not shocking
Polis clearly has always been CD-2's version of Obama. I'm glad he took the risk and stepped out in support.
This should be a call for everyone to pick a side and not be a coward. The Dems need a candidate soon, whether it's Obama or Clinton.

The question has been pitched
Who do the other CD2 candidates support for President? I have a notion, but I won't put words in their mouth.

Obama has clearly won
The only reason for candidates to hold off is not honk off Clinton supporters...

Tea party support in the primary.

Speaking of Obama
couldn't go to the Obama Rally at Civic Center today. Program was to start at 2PM.  Would love to hear how it went.

Video of Jared's Announcement
For those who couldn't attend the rally in Boulder this afternoon, here's a video of Jared's remarks regarding his endorsement of Barack Obama.

smart move
Polis is about 35% of the delegates now and his field operation is clearly out matched.  By doing this rather obvious ploy Polis may stay slightly above 30% and make the ballot at the Congressional convention.
Ed Perlmutter Obama's top person in Colorado is supporting Fitz-Gerald and working very hard to make sure that she wins. Perlmutter will make sure that the doors to Obama's supporters and donors are never opened to Polis.

How do you figure Perlmutter
as Obama's "top person in Colorado"?  I'd definitely believe Hart, who has been heavily involved in the campaigning in this state; and then Pena, who has also done quite a bit.  I was unaware Perlmutter has even announced who he's supporting.

"... politics has been divided between two types of people: those who want more people to vote, and those who want fewer people to vote."
- Sen. Kerry

[ Parent ]
Perlmutter has been very outspoken about his support of Obama,
but you're right. If your talking about name recognition, he's not the top person in Colorado compared to Pena and Hart.

[ Parent ]
Perlmutter was the first major to announce support.
I think he may have even informally encouraged him to run.

Is Dayna the new campaign manager ?

If I were them,
I would try to spell "Barack" correctly.

If I were they........
I would also use "whom" instead of "who" - "when taking the risk to throw my support behind whom I think......"

good catch
and welcome to Chipeta.

nice shot

Smart move or desperate one? Ward endorses Romney
Jared Polis seems to have between 30% and  35% of the delegates.  Turnout on a sunny May day will determine if Polis makes the ballot or will have to join Will Shafroth and pass around petitions.  I think that this is a desperate move as his support amongst delegates to the Congressional convention is eroding. Not spelling Obama's name correctly is pretty pathetic.

Senator Steve Ward who runs the risk of getting under 10% at the Congressional convention in his campaign to replace Tom Tancredo announced his endorsement of Mitt Romney for President today.

I believe Jared has about 35 - 40%
I don't think there's much risk of his not making the ballot.

The results are here and Adams county with their 99 uncommitted delegates (I have no idea how that works) makes it a bit up in the air. But I would be shocked if Jared comes in under 35%.

Tea party support in the primary.

Be ready
Be ready to be shocked then.

if JP falls under 30%, he petitions on.
.
In that case, JFG gets top billing.

But even if JP gets 30+% at the District Assembly,
if Joan gets more,
she still gets top billing.

The only real consequence of JP getting on the ballot at the Assembly is that it guarantees him the #2 spot on the ballot,
ahead of Will.

If he waits to petition on until after the Assembly results are known,
Will will get the #2 slot, since he will have his petitions turned in before Jared.

Of course,
if Jared aggressively petitions on as soon as the starting gate opens,
he can beat Will to the Secretary of State's office with his petitions and still grab the #2 spot.

The only really important thing about the Assembly is for Will to make sure his name is not put into nomination,
unbeknownst to him,
and then he fails to get 10%.
That would prevent him from petitioning on.

I don't think that's a risk for JP.
.

[ Parent ]
I disagree
If Jared can't make 30%, I'd say he is finished. Despite his spin that it is just party insiders, his consultants must know that the vast majority of the people at the caucus were NOT party insiders...many were new voters.

Of course he "can" continue if he petitions on...it would only be for his ego. He has already spent $1.3 million on the race and if he can't even muster 30% at the assembly, he doesn't have a shot no matter how many millions more he spends.

The only question would be if he was wise enough to get out or stubborn enough to stay in.

[ Parent ]
Gabe, it that the official stance of the Shafroth campaign?

[ Parent ]
When are petitions due?
Might Jared end up imitating his pal Marc Holtzman?

[ Parent ]
if JP does go below 30%....
...then it blows this whole race up.  Who cares if he petitions?  If he can't buy 30% he's not viable, period.  And it makes Will's path to upsetting Joan a whole lot easier.  Under 30% would be the best news for Will, over 30% would be the best news for JFG.
