Wil Armstrong to Petition on 6th CD Ballot

by: Republican 36

Mon Feb 04, 2008 at 08:19:23 AM MST

( - promoted by Colorado Pols)

Received a letter in the mail on Saturday from Wil Armstrong.  In his letter he asks Republicans to sign his petition to place his name on the Republican primary ballot for the 6th CD.  In his letter he reminds Republican voters that Congressman Tancredo petitioned on the ballot the first time he ran for the 6th CD.  Apparently, he lacks sufficient Republican grassroots support to go through the caucus and assembly process.

Coffman's strategy
I've heard that this will be Coffman's strategy also - which surprised me, as he should have the support during the caucus and assembly process.

Has anyone else hear?

Sounds like
it's the strategy in most of the contested races (5th & 6th).  And yes, I remember reading in the Rocky end of last year that Coffman said he'd petition.

Although now, he may want to simply go through assembly, now that he doesn't have to worry about being squeezed out by Armstrong & Harvey.  For that matter, Coffman may be able to talk Harvey out of it after Harvey's abysmal report.

As for Wil not having enough grassroots support, I don't think there's too much for that.  Out of the three, he's the least 'insider.'  The other 2 have campaign organizations.  And his dad's name isn't what it used to be.

I thought only carpetbaggers did this

Harvey's grassroots efforts scared them off
Both Coffman and Armstrong know that they can't compete with Harvey at the caucus and the assembly.  It didn't take too many phone calls to figure out that they don't have the conservative support that it will take to win CD-6.  They will take their money and attempt to fool the voters that they are conservative enough to represent them. The voters will look at the record and see that Harvey is the only candidate with true conservative credentials.

I find it interesting that Armstrong while addressing a group of republicans just two weeks ago said that he was going to go through the caucus.  I guess daddy's money can only buy so much support.

Watch Out Wil Armstrong, the Hotalings are coming for you!
Watch the Hotalings go after Wil Armstrong now.  They will lie and cheat and find ways to make even Wil & Bill Armstrong look like liberals.
I have a feeling the Armstrongs are going to regret their support of Doug Lamborn after this race when they see how "sleazy" the Hotalings (with Lamborn's permission) really are.  Watch out!

Why is it
when people talk about or refer to Wil that they always bring Daddy Bill into the conversation?  Could it be that Wil can't stand on his own record and that he must rely on Daddy Bill's credentials?  Make sense, since Willy boy has no record of his own. If Wil does win CD-6 will Daddy come and do the voting for him?

The Hotalings..
are hard working, principled conservatives.  Jon is an excellent campaigner.

You're just sour grapes, because your guy (Crank) got exposed for being the liberal that he is.

The 6th CD is a-changin'
It isn't the conservative bulwark that it once was. I think Coffman is still the favorite, as ColoradoPols prognosticates.

How do you explain Harvey's incredibly anemic fundraising? Is he "holding back"?

[ Parent ]
We will see if the 6th is changing
I personally think that the conservatives are still strong in the district and they will let everyone know it come election time.

I have no idea about his fundraising but knowing Ted, he is exactly where he wants to be. I am sure most of his efforts have been getting ready for tomorrow.

[ Parent ]
You're right
Ted Harvey is running a stealth campaign by raising no money, being a mere blip in the polls, and expending no effort.

And then when it's time to vote, why suddenly the heavens will open up and the voice of God will speak and...

My recommendations in the 2010 primary?

[ Parent ]
Blip in the polls?
I must have missed a credible poll that was taken; I know you guys are much smarter than that.

I think it is very telling that both Coffman and Armstrong are planning to petition on.  If Coffman was a strong 40% as his poll tells him he is, then he should for sure be going through the assembly. I think they both know that Harvey is strong and their best shot is to try to out spend him in the primary without first coming in 2nd & 3rd to him at the assembly.

[ Parent ]
And then when it's time to vote, why suddenly the heavens will open up and the voice of God will speak and..........
That's how it works in C.D. 5!

[ Parent ]
Will Armstrong
I saw Will Armstrong announce his petition-on strategy.

I've never had any exposure to him before, but found him to be very articulate.  I found him appealing to be a businessperson rather than a career politico.

My reading of history convinces me that most bad government results from too much government.  Thomas Jefferson

Harvey has 8% support in the latest Poll and less and $30k COH
He's got um right where he wants them.....In front of him! hahahahah!

link?
What poll are you referencing?

[ Parent ]
My bad
The Tarrence group poll from last week Coffman 40%?
Armstrong 10%
Harvey 8%
Ward 1%

Margin of error was 5%

I dug it up in pols. The Coffman numbers are actually higher
Question: "If the Republican primary election for Congress were held today and you had to make a choice, for whom would you vote?"
Response: Mike Coffman 44%
Wil Armstrong 10%
Ted Harvey 8%
Steve Ward 1%

The poll was conducted for the Coffman for Congress campaign by the Tarrance Group between 1/22/08 and 1/23/08 with a margin of error of +/- 5.8%

Wow...
I've heard rumors that Coffman was not sure if his campaign will go petition or convention, but within the past two weeks at a GOP meeting I heard Armstrong himself get up and say he was going through convention, and that the convention process is were you cut your teeth in politics. This is a pretty significant change in strategy early in the campaign, he's going to need to keep pumping $30K of his own money each quarter to afford his seemingly inability to stick to his plans.

The Hotalings are only half the story
Sure they'll try to go around and say nobody is as conservative as their guy and there are "higher powers" telling them Harvey is the right candidate. But, don't for a minute think that Armstong won't have his fair share of "outside" interests creating 527's to attack any and everybody in the race.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Just buy it
I guess it shouldn't surprise me that Armstrong is going petition, I'm sure he, and his old man will do what they can to buy this election. If you need proof look at the $30K he has already put into his own campaign

On Armstrong
I like Wil Armstrong.  I find his private sector experience refreshing.  The GOP needs a fresh start.  The other guys have made a majority of their life's earnings working for the government.  Coffman is transparently in it for himself.

Furthermore, a few observations on:

Harvey - Harvey is clearly out of his league.  Voters in the 6th have their bases covered with the Armstrong & Coffman.

Bill Armstrong - many of you are giving him more credit/blame than he deserves.  He's got cache with some older conservatives & insiders, but 95% of those who live in the 6th didn't live there when he was last elected.  Of course he's going to support his son, is that so shocking?  And anyone who has met Wil knows he can think and act on his own.

The money - take the $26k from Wil's fundraising totals and I think that still leaves him within $20k of Coffman, who had almost an entire month more than Wil to raise money.  Personally, I think both were impressive for such a short time period.  But it's not reasonable at this point to assert that Wil is buying anything.  Let's see what 2Q brings first.

Private sector experience refreshing?
It's loose lending policies from mortgage lenders like Will that have led to our current recession. If that's refreshing I can't wait to see what he does if elected.

Guess you don't have a mortgage.
Sounds like you wouldn't be caught dead interacting with a (yikes!) 'mortgage lender.'  Owning a home is overrated anyway, huh?
