Delta County Commissioner to Challenge Schaffer

by: Colorado Pols

Mon Sep 10, 2007 at 10:36:28 AM MDT

As the Grand Junction Sentinel reports:

After several weeks testing the waters, Delta County Commissioner Wayne Wolf is preparing to take on fellow Republican Bob Schaffer for the GOP nomination for the U.S. Senate.

Wolf is planning an announcement tour this week, he said Saturday during the Club 20 fall meeting in Grand Junction.

Colorado GOP Chairman Dick Wadhams told him "you really need to look at the reality of this," Wolf said.

Wolf's bid would make him the only Western Slope resident not currently in Congress to seek federal office in 2008, and he acknowledged his bid is a "huge undertaking."

He wants to move ahead because, he said, federal officials don't really understand the burden they're placing on local governments with mandates such as expensive storm-sewer requirements that are set without federal funding.

Those officials might be sympathetic with local government problems, "but they don't understand."

Wolf, 56, is serving his second term on the Delta County Commission and is a fifth-generation rancher...

Seems like an insurgent bid to us. This is a name that has never surfaced in our many discussions of potential challengers for the GOP Senate nomination, and as desperate as many Republicans are for an alternative to Bob Schaffer, it's tough to imagine such a relative unknown posing a serious threat--to Schaffer or Democrat Mark Udall. But stranger things have happened...

Yay!
Now as long as Moveon.org or somebody doesn't do something stupid and recruit a challenger for Udall, this will only increase Udall's chances (even if only by a tiny bit).

Assuming this guy even makes the ballot

True enough...
Although Marc Holtzman never made it on the ballot, and a lot of us believe he had a significant effect on the tone of the general election.

[ Parent ]
This guy is no where near Marc Holtzman
He will be similar to the guy who ran against Udall last year, you know he's there but can't remember his name.

[ Parent ]
good question...
That could make this interesting. Is McInnis still upset enough about being pushed out to align with this guy? Delta is in CD3...

[ Parent ]
not a chance
Scott and Bob are friends, if anyone pushed Scott out it certainly was not Schaffer.

[ Parent ]
has Schaffer set a date yet for when he's going to announce his candidacy?
I realize that he's already announced twice and recanted at least once, but most recently didn't he say that "if" he becomes a candidate, he'll start addressing particular issues.
The Wad Man might not want to completely dissuade Wolf from running since it's still possible Schaffer will opt out of the race.

snort...ha a ha
Maybe he'll get the GOP side (36%) of the 28,000 residents of Delta County...but seriously...Wayne Wolf?  But I wish him well, a GOP west slope-city folk divide is good for the Ds.

Who?
Seriously.  Wolf starts out with a Name ID deficit that is so deep he'd have massive issues overcoming it.

But I'll still thank him and wish him well, because it will take money away from Schaffer's general election campaign and divert it to fighting of an internal party struggle.

Doubtful
I can't see this guy making the ballot.

Delta House
Wayne's World.

"storm-sewer requirements" ... where do these guys come from?

Although the general public won't relate to storm sewer requirements
the bigger point relates to Federal impacts and unfunded mandates passed on to states, counties, and municipalities and the need for more local control.

Man I miss you
when you're not here!

Cmmr Wolf may not have much of a chance to beat the big bad other guy, but I sincerely hope he will be able to raise issues of concern like stormwater runoff, unfunded mandates, election mandates, yadda yadda yadda.

Good luck Senor Lobo!  I'm rooting for you, not because it will divide the Republican house, but because there is a small chance you may be able to help it.

Thanks Car 31
I'm working through a 12 step program to leave this blog before 2008, so I'm logging on less and less.  It's good to see you too!
