Schaffer Mixing Senate Money With State Board Business?

by: Colorado Pols

Mon Jul 30, 2007 at 14:27:24 PM MDT

The liberal group Progress Now is calling on Republican Senate candidate Bob Schaffer to return campaign cash from a donor with ties to Schaffer's work on the State Board of Education. According to a press release:

ProgressNowAction launched a statewide petition calling on State Board of Education Member Bob Schaffer to immediately return campaign contributions he received from the owner of a for-profit education company that was rewarded a contract with the SBOE.  Schaffer cast the decisive vote to grant the contract to this company...

...Schaffer, in his current role as a member of the Colorado State Board of Education, recently cast the deciding vote for a for-profit company, owned by David Brennan, to continue to receive tens of thousands of Colorado taxpayer dollars for programs that the company sells to Denver's charter schools. (Denver Post, May 10, 2007).

The Denver School Board had voted 6-1 to get rid of Brennan's costly programs, but Schaffer—conveniently disregarding the notion of "local control"—voted for huge profits for Brennan on the backs of Colorado taxpayers. (Rocky Mountain News, May 10, 2007)

According to the press release, Schaffer failed to disclose his involvement with Brennan to the State Board of Education, on which he was elected to serve in 2006. If the facts in this case are correct (see full press release below), we'll probably see this episode in a campaign ad sometime next year. This certainly looks bad, and can be made to look even worse since Schaffer took in additional contributions from Brennan soon after the favorable vote.

Colorado Pols :: Schaffer Mixing Senate Money With State Board Business?
ProgressNowAction launched a statewide petition calling on State Board of Education Member Bob Schaffer to immediately return campaign contributions he received from the owner of a for-profit education company that was rewarded a contract with the SBOE.  Schaffer cast the decisive vote to grant the contract to this company.

"Backwards Bob" Schaffer needs to stop selling his vote on the State Board of Education for campaign contributions," stated Michael Huttner, Executive Director of ProgressNowAction. "We call on Schaffer to immediately return his dirty contributions."

Schaffer, in his current role as a member of the Colorado State Board of Education, recently cast the deciding vote for a for-profit company, owned by David Brennan, to continue to receive tens of thousands of Colorado taxpayer dollars for programs that the company sells to Denver's charter schools.

Facts:

Schaffer failed to disclose to the State Board that Brennan has been the subject of numerous requests for investigation in other states to determine whether he has personally pocketed millions of taxpayer dollars through his for-profit school programs. (Tampa Tribune, July 16, 2006; Cleveland Plain Dealer, March 19 and 24, 2006)

Schaffer failed to disclose to the State Board during the vote that he has taken campaign contributions from Brennan going back to 2004. (www.opensecrets.org )

Schaffer has still has not disclosed to the State Board that since this recent vote he has taken thousands of dollars more in campaign contributions from Brennan within weeks of his vote for Brennan's company. (FEC, Schaffer Itemized Receipts, pg. 53/186)

ProgressNowAction called on its statewide membership to join their call for Schaffer to immediately return the contributions he took while serving on the State Board of Education. The petition can be signed at www.BackwardsBobEthics.com

ProgressNowAction plans to deliver the requests to Schaffer and each of the members of the State Board of Education for their response during their upcoming meetings slated for August 8 and 9, 2007.
Schaffer's Pattern of failing to disclose conflicts of interest:

One day after voting for Brennan's company, Schaffer introduced a motion to take away a Poudre Valley school district's authority over its charter schools. Yet Schaffer failed to disclose that his wife serves on a committee of the charter schools in dispute or that his son was enrolled in another charter school also dispute. Schaffer refused to return requests for comment on his failure to disclose his conflict when called by the local paper. (Fort Collins Coloradoan, May 12, 2007)

In 2004, Schaffer failed to disclose accurate information about his career and was caught providing a misleading resume by claiming to be a director of a bank which did not even exist. (Denver Post, July 18, 2004)

And Schaffer still has not disclosed to the public when he plans to return the money he took from now indicted ex-Congressman Tom DeLay who has been the subject of numerous criminal investigations.(www.citizensforethics.org)

“Backwards Bob’s latest campaign contributions are just the tip of the iceberg,” stated Huttner.  “Colorado needs to hold Schaffer accountable for selling his vote to the highest donor.”

Not a problem for BS
He's a Republican, so people will not find something like this surprising.

Tea party support in the primary.

I'm tellin' your Momma!

It is getting so bad
It used to be that there would be a few bad apples on each side. But it seems now that it's just Republican after Republican. What has happened to the party of Lincoln????

Tea party support in the primary.

Sen. Stevens of Alaska won't have the answer....
...they just raided his house today with a warrant looking for info on corruption.

Oh yeah, if you didn't know, that's REPUBLICAN Senator Stevens.  Not coincidentally, same as our boy Bobby.

[ Parent ]
I wonder...
Did Stevens get his warrant delivered in a dump truck, or via a series of tubes?

I don't know what the raid was supposed to provide; according to the available info, the raid was a joint raid by the IRS and FBI looking for bills on his home improvements.  Either they're looking to find every single bill for the improvements in order to exonerate him, or they're looking to find receipts forwarded by VECO saying "we paid for this"; they're not going to prove much by finding less than every receipt.

Still, couldn't happen to a nicer guy.  The Alaskan Congressional caucus is generally greedy beyond their State's needs, and Alaskan politics has become pretty corrupted.

The warrant was delivered over a bridge to nowhere....

Hmmmmmm
What percentage of all elected Republicans have admitted to or been convicted of corruption?

When corruption occurs, or is suspected, it is highlighted by the media and in the blog world ad nauseam, but I doubt actual corruption has a high percentage of the whole in either party.  This generalization hurts good R's like your Mom and the vast majority of other office holders who are not corrupt, IMHO.

[ Parent ]
While you are correct,
...the stats are it's the R's that are overwhelming corrupt (and sex offenders.)

My guess as to why is that R's are attracted to elected office for the power, D's (moreso) for the service.  Obviously, a very sweeping generalization.

[ Parent ]
VERY sweeping
So what are the hard stats, or is this an informal poll?:)

Percentage of convicted/admitted corrupt R's against the whole.

[ Parent ]
Just read the papers, my dear....
And of course, Pols.

[ Parent ]
Yeah
I recall the same "most corrupt" stories during the Clinton adminstration.  I didn't buy it then either.

[ Parent ]
One is the administration, one is congress
Sometimes BOTH are corrupt in a given time period....like now.

That doesn't look good
Admittedly, this is a hit piece by a biased group, but the allegation is serious; taking contributions of that nature is Bad with a capital BS.

Udall takes unions' money, doesn't support progressnow's tactics
When Republicans charged that Mark Udall took unions' money after voting for legislation they supported, the Denver Post story cited above quoted a Udall spokesman who said Udall doesn't support Huttner's (progressnow.com's executive director) tactics.

Link is here. Read the whole story.

http://www.denverpos...

Now, who's on the take, Schaffer who takes $3,750 from a charter school supporter or Udall who takes 10s of thousands from the unions?

Such hypocrisy from the left.

[ Parent ]
The difference is...
...that Udall reports his contributions and folk like you or me can look it up.

BS did not report the contributions.  And his wife was in on the fix.

No hypocrisy.  No comparison.  No Republican candidate for senator.

Such talking points from the right. AS will regurgitate just about anything that is spewed from the right, much like Mark Couch.

Predictable rightie spin in the Denver Post
http://www.denverpos...

Looks like Mark Couch rolled Dick Wadhams in flour and found the wet spot. Since when do you compare coting for unions in general with voting to support the work of a SINGLE DONOR SPECIFICALLY? That's just stupid, but there's Mark Couch slurping it up like Wadhams' drunken prom date.

No doubt
A Bob Schaffer corporate contributor gets to keep raking in the dough from a failing school, and Mark Couch helps cast that as the moral equivalent of protecting the integrity of the vote?

Reaching.

Yuck - that is a vision I want out of my brain NOW!

over-flowing with conflicts
Couch also failed to note that this isn't the first conflict of interest BS has had on while serving on the State Board, let alone in Congress. But I guess when DICK WADhams lets the crap flow Couch would rather soak that up than the facts.
