Mike May Denies Stafford Threatened

by: Colorado Pols

Wed Mar 28, 2007 at 07:15:14 AM MDT

The Republican House Minority Leader is basically accusing another Republican legislator of lying (which seems pretty serious to us), as the Rocky Mountain News reports this morning:

A controversial construction-defects bill that created political drama at the Capitol in recent weeks is scheduled for debate today on the House floor.

"This is going to be one heck of a fight," predicted Rep. Alice Borodkin, D-Denver.

The intrigue involves automated phone calls to senior citizens that infuriated Democratic lawmakers, including Borodkin, and a Republican lawmaker at odds with her own caucus and the home-building industry.

Rep. Debbie Stafford, R-Aurora, said she was told by a fellow House Republican that she would be targeted by a home-builders association in future elections if she supported the bill.

On Tuesday, House Minority Leader Mike May, R-Parker, said Stafford has an ax to grind because home builders worked to kill an unrelated bill of hers this session.

He said her version of events "never happened."

"I stick by my story," Stafford shot back. "I think it's time we stick by the people of Colorado, and they are being stuck with shoddily built homes and no recourse."

Cry havoc and slip loose the dogs of war...........
.....within the House GOP Caucus, of course!

Another Republican Scandal Unravels
The facts of the Stafford-1338 Coercion Scandal are growing into a pretty dire picture for the Colorado Radical Republicans.  It has been well documented that GOP Radicals are prolific at spreading lies against their opponents during election season, now those tactics are being applied to legislation.

In this case it's the use of lyin' and cheatin' by a Colorado GOP activist/financier through a targeted intimidation robo-call.  When you can't argue against the real points of an issue, spread a lie that scares senior citizens.  Although the Colorado Home Builders Association and Colorado Concern claim no involvement (the robo-bill was paid for by Colorado Concern chairman Rick Sapkin).  Calls to those organizations were sufficient to hang-up the robo caller.

Rep. Stafford's assailant must be close and important to Republican (wants to be a permanent) Minority Leader Mike May (R-Parker).  With the pressure on, and Rep. Stafford currently holding the ethical high-ground, May has resorted to the stereotypical Rove-Wadhams mantra of "...admit nothing, deny everything and make a counter-accusation to smear your opponent."

The "don't believe her" playground denials of May are crumbling under the "I stick to my story" of Stafford.  May's inability to close this controversy is further indication that that attack on Stafford is deliberate act sanctioned, or directed, by GOP leaders.

In another reality, he would have condemned the coercion and intimidation of Stafford.  His public announcement that the incident has been dealt with would have inferred behind the scenes apologies and some symbolic concession to Stafford.  This ain't gonna happen in Colorado.

The Colorado GOP House caucus is showing the signs of an internal purge.  It seems that even a pep-talk yesterday by the most prominent Republican in the 2nd Congressional District, Bob "Boo-prez," was unable to curtail the fratricide.  Maybe he didn't want it to stop.

The return of Wadhams to the Colorado GOP could mean a circling of the wagons by the Radical Right WingNuts, and any non-conformist (like Stafford) being thrown out.  Too bad, that strategy is failing.  Rather than fortifying their special interest serving position, the frailty of their foundation is showing.  The Colorado GOP is cracked in more ways than one.

Ralphie T: I don't know Mike May or Debbie Stafford
so I can't say if she is exaggerating or May is lying.  Do you know these people or are you just theorizing?

Mad as a March hare
Debbie Stafford is from E. Aurora and has done a fine job protecting domestic animals from sex w/ humans. She visited Noble, Georgia and decided Colorado's funeral homes shpuld be regulated. Now, because the minority leader, Rep. May, sits in on a committee meeting she gets her little feelers hurt.

Settle down Frances!

She's been and dontinues to be a little 'off'.

[ Parent ]
and speaking Both Ways and C.D. 2, any chance the Wad Man might persuade Bob to take on Fitz-Gerald or Polis next year?

[ Parent ]
maybe she should change parties
Show some moxie girl

We would applaud that!!
Then the Dems could have both Gwen [would anybody like a cookie?] Green and Dingy Debbie Stafford. That's one apple I think the GOP should gladly part with.

It's a trend
Republicans are kicking out the women and minorities from "their" party. Look at the Senate Republican Caucus, and the House is surely to follow. It's becoming the party of White Rich Men.

Stafford is a nut
Sex with animals? Remove the death penalty? Bizarre behavior in committee - she's lost it. It's time for funeral home Stafford to be put out to pasture.

This one flew way over the cuckoo's nest. Someone please find Nurse Hatchett.

Stafford isn't in sound mind to discern what's fact and what's fantasy.

I understand that Republicans at the Capitol have been laughing at Debbie Stafford behind her back for years
May is now signaling that it's okay to laugh at her to her face?
She won't switch parties because of the Religious Right agenda to which she subscribes so fervently but she definitely shows occasional sympathy for the Dems on certain "nanny state" issues.

This is ridiculous
Why would Stafford lie about something like this even *if* what May is saying is true?  It makes no sense.

"Thousands are sailing, across the western ocean, to a land of opportunity, that some of them will never see . . ."

- The Pogues

Are you kidding me???
Why wouldn't she?! She's thrown every one of her colleagues under the bus. And don't lecture me about pressure from third parties to vote a certain way -- Jared Amendment 41 oh my God I've got to fix this to get elected Polis has made every house democrat his bitch to fix the mess he created last year with Jenny [it won't do any harm] Flannigan.

Honestly -- are you that naive??

[ Parent ]
?
I am definitely *not* kidding you.  The tremendous run-on sentence that you just spewed is completely irrelevant to what I just asked.

How bout staying on topic.

Mad Stafford
Last fall Stafford accused everyone in her church of financial misdeads and threatening (look at the Denver Post).

She voted to repeal the death penalty because she got mad a someone in committee and then said she supported the death penalty.

Changed her story at least three times on exactly who "threatened" her.

Mad Stafford is on the loose and her vote goes against whomever she's mad at that day (or hour, minute or second).

Anyone know if the bill has a chance of passing?
Anyone know if the bill has a chance of passing?

It sounds a little bit overboard to me and not particularly good legislation.  That being said, I feel like I'm rooting for it because builders and developers are always the worst in playing dirty politics, and this is no exception.  An egg on their face would be most welcome.

This passed the House today on 2nd Reading
But it's a horrible bill.  It pretty much tries to do what Amendment 34 tried in 2004 and that was defeated by a 3 to 1 margin.

Won't do a thing for a consumer protection (previous legislation passed a few years ago seems to be accomplishing that), will add significantly to housing costs (due to increased insurance liability costs for homebuilders), and will benefit nobody but trial lawyers.

Look who the largest proponents of the bill are and ask yourself why are we trying an end run around the stated wishes of the voters?

Good point
I agree, it's not good legislation.

It's just that the developers and their lobby are so consistently distasteful that you're bound to support whatever they oppose as a knee-jerk reaction.
