Club For Growth Makes Doe Eyes at Schaffer

From a Club for Growth press release:

The Club for Growth PAC is pleased to hear that former Representative Bob Schaffer is considering entering the race to succeed retiring Republican Colorado Senator Wayne Allard.

During his three terms in Congress from 1997-2002, Bob Schaffer was a dedicated defender of taxpayers and a strong proponent of lower taxes, limited government, and greater freedom.  He even earned the nickname "Honest Bob" for fulfilling his campaign pledge not to serve more than three terms as a U.S. Representative.

The National Taxpayers Union awarded Rep. Schaffer five grades of A for 1997-2001 and a grade of B+ for his final year, ranking him number 31 out of the House of Representatives' 435 members in 2002.  The NTU scorecard is based on every vote that "significantly affects taxes, spending, debt, and regulatory burdens on consumers and taxpayers."  In the same vein, the Council for Citizens Against Government Waste gave Rep. Schaffer a lifetime rating of 85 for his six years in Congress, making him a "Taxpayer Hero."

"I served with Bob Schaffer in the House of Representatives," Club for Growth President Pat Toomey said, "and I speak from personal experience when I say that Bob Schaffer would be a fantastic addition to the U.S. Senate.  In the House of Representatives, he was a committed supporter of free-market principles, and I have no doubt that his support would continue as strongly in the U.S. Senate."

Can you feel the love? And - as we've been saying for months - the obvious candidacy of Bob Schaffer for the U.S. Senate?

Mark Udall
With Bob's extremist past, and having little heft outside of Larimer County, Mark Udall can win this thing.

But Udall's going to have to kick it up a knotch if he's going to fire up Dems state-wide to actually work for him. He's been hitting home runs in the CD-2 T-ball games for too long. Putting the base to sleep will leave it looking for other campaigns and causes. Time to get lean and mean.

Don't forget Weld County! (fastest growing in the state)
Bob has some heft there, I imagine.

(I was going to insert some snarky comment about Musgrave here, but decided against it.)

I was going to insert some snarky comment about Musgrave here, but decided against it......
MM makes Bob Schaffer look like an intelligent, honorable, principled statesman.
I think Condom Bob is a joke for the U.S. Senate but I wouldn't mind seeing him take on "Musty" in the C.D. 4 GOP primary in '08.

[ Parent ]
He'd wipe her out
If Bob Schaffer had no plan or organization could be nominated from the floor of the Fourth Congressional District and keep Musty off of the ballot.  No dount in my mind.

[ Parent ]
But how would all of this square with his high&mighty term limit pledge?

[ Parent ]
he sat out a few years......he could claim he reconnected with the people and is now refreshed
Was his term-limits pledge a life-time limit, or simply a promise of no more than three consecutive terms?

Club for Growth Support Tainted
The real question is whether the Club for Growth's support is tainted after the ugly CD5 primary where each of their ads were pulled for inaccurate information.

If the Club for Growth gets in, then so may Joel Hefley! Big problems for Schaffer with Lambpornographic campaign methods so fresh on the minds in the 5th CD.
We need ethics in politics, both from Republicans and Democrats--and ethics will be a key issue in the general election, so any endorsement by the Club for Growth of Bob Schaffer will certainly give Republicans and Democrats alike reason to vote for Udall.

Call it guilt by association, but, it's inevitable that Schaffer will be lumped in with Doug Lambporn and Lambpornographic campaign methods if Pat Tumor is involved in Colorado's senate race.  Udall will rightly use that against Schaffer.  I will.

If Dick Wadhams wants Bob Schaffer as the anointed one, then both Wadhams and Schaffer alike will be making a terrible mistake getting in bed with Pat Tumor and the Club for Growth.  There's not enough political penicillin to innoculate Schaffer from all the political STD's he'll have if he gets in bed with Pat Tumor.

And, here's the upshot.  Any endorsement by the CFG of Bob Schaffer may invite the contested race that Wadhams and Schaffer want to avoid and from the only Republican with the ability to do it--Joel Hefley.  Why?  The Club for Growth, and other Lambpornographers, gave the 5th CD Doug Lambporn--which is common knowledge.  Should the Club for Growth start chatting up Bob Schaffer, that's sure to get Joel Hefley's attention, and that of a lot of other ethical Republicans and Democrats in the 5th CD. It may start the drums beating for the anti-CFG candidacy of Joel Hefley.

I'm not sure if I need a shower or a cigarette after this post
What's with all the sexual imagery?

Lambpornographic campaign methods.............I love that term!
kinky, with no socially redeeming value!

Demogirl
You think Hefley is going to be persuaded to come out of his retirement to make a Senate run?  Are you on crack??? :) The man retired for a reason.  I might buy an insurgent Crank run, but to say that the nearly 80 year old former congressman is going to leave his wife and horses to make a half assed run at a senate seat he's never had interest in is crazy.  Sure people may bring it up, but that's going to go about as far as a ban on abortion would go through the House of Reps

Can you feel the love?
In the case of Bob Schaffer, that will have to be done by barebacking!

What does this do?
If Club for growth comes in for bob it means one massive thing... Millions.  CFG will be supporting fewer more targeted races this year and the donor base wants some winners. They did not have a great cycle and they are itching for some major wins to get them back on board.

Do not forget Colorado has more repub voters than Dems, if the Colorado GOP gets them out unlike last year they win.

Big, big bucks
I think the Deminator is closer to the mark on this than our sexually frustrated girlfriend Demogirl (normally I'd feel bad about having a sexually frustrated girlfriend, but it's not that kind of relationship).

CFG will mean big bucks for Schaffer, but it's not a silver bullet. Wasn't Pete Coors mom the chair of CFG when he ran for Senate? Look how well that worked out.

As for Hefley jumping in... I'm pretty sure he's more popular among Democrats than he is among Republicans after snubbing their own nominee last fall.

Money+Image=Thumps-up!
More than bling, it brings a certain credibility to Schaffer's claim to being the one true heir to Reagan in Colorado.  He's unmistakably solid on values issues.  But he still needs to prove to the libertarian folks that he's just as strong, just as committed, and just as solid on fiscal issues.  Getting CFG's support would do just that.

[ Parent ]
It is
It is not an end all, but look how CFG helped Doug Lamborn, sinking in over 200 K in Ads vs Jay Fawcett and 100k when it was crank. ( In a safe seat)... some senate races have raised over a million from the donor bases and another million in ads and such from CFG.

The Repubs are in need of a win and they may sink everything they have behind this race... national, CFG, all the other 527s and such.

Tim, Pat, Jared, Rutt - get your check books ready... this is not going to be a cheap race for the 4 horsemen

[ Parent ]
Dr. D, if Schaffer stands alone and runs against Udall
your contention that this is a red state will come down to this race.  I think it will be very hard to impugn Schaffer's character, so this will be a true Liberal vs. Conservative race.  Of course, the media and certain blogs who shall remain nameless will do their best to paint this as Moderate Statesman Udall vs. Wingnut Schaffer, but other than that, this race should test your theory.

[ Parent ]
it will be very hard to impugn Schaffer's character....
....but his intelligence (or lack thereof) will be fair game

[ Parent ]
You think he lacks intelligence?
I've heard him speak numerous times and he certainly doesn't sound unintelligent. Maybe it's me? (Purely rhetorical, don't answer that!) I wouldn't misunderestimate him:)

[ Parent ]
Other than generally supporting Republicans
what is the big deal with Club For Growth?  Are they any different than any other special interest group who support candidates that agree with their philosophy?

I was wondering the same thing.
What makes them such a BFD
