Schaffer Amusingly Coy About Senate Run

by: Colorado Pols

Wed Jan 31, 2007 at 09:08:45 AM MST

As the Fort Collins Coloradoan reports:

Fort Collins resident Bob Schaffer flew to Washington, D.C., on Tuesday to meet with politicos but said he hasn't decided whether to run for Senate in 2008.

Reached on his cell phone as he changed planes, Schaffer, a Republican, said he planned to have dinner with senators and meet with "political folks" during his trip.

The political blog Colorado Pols reported Tuesday that Schaffer had decided to run for the Senate seat being vacated by Loveland Republican Sen. Wayne Allard, who earlier this month said he wouldn't seek a third term because of a pledge he made to voters to serve only two terms. Schaffer said he hadn't yet made the call...

Translation: he doesn't want to acknowledge the news coming from a blog (we've heard it before), and he'll tell you he's running--he is running, of course--when he's good and ready to.

Sounds like
I think he's busy kissing the rings out there.

Could he be
setting himself for a rematch in 2010?  Circulate the name now, scare the money Gods with an 08 PRIMARY battle, and shore up the big bucks for a 2010 run and bow out gracefully this time?

[ Parent ]
Oh Please.
He's already been out of office for 4 years.  By then he will be yesterday's news and there will be a crop of younger Republicans coming up.  It's now or never for Bob.

[ Parent ]
Out of sight but not out of mind
I bet his old Congressional District would take him back.  He might not have held a Congressional Office for four years, but as National Committeeman and his service to the State Board of Education I'm thinking he not exactly old news.

[ Parent ]
oh hell, even I concede he'd an improvement over what occupies his C.D. seat now!
Yes, they would take him back!  He should challenge Musty in a primary.

[ Parent ]
it's possible B.S. will indeed take a pass on running this time and wait for '10
If the GOP's popularity has not improved by this summer and if '08 looks to be another '06-type election blow-out for the Republicans, then I suspect B.S. will be smart enough to put off running until '10.
Plus, Condom Bob can wrap himself (no pun intended) with the title of being the "party-unifier"  ("I'm a uniter, not a divider") by preventing a messy primary, and giving "Scooter" a clear path to ultimate defeat.
One big question bugs me:  I know where Mark Udall stands on Iraq and Shrub's surge.  Has either McInnis or Schaffer weighed in on these issues, and if so, what are their positions?

a betting man says 2010

[ Parent ]
I don't think so
Why go back to the 4th? He had that job.
No, Nicholson dropping out yesterday, the day that the rumors of Schaffer getting in to the Senate Race really took off, tells me that no one except Mr. and Mrs. McInnis want their little boy in the Senate Race.
Also... Nicholson is a cabinet member right? Sounds to me like Rove and Bush want McInnis out as well.

[ Parent ]
Harumpf
You mean you ran a story with the word "apparently," cited no sources, it may or may not be bullshit, Schaffer's being coy, and it's all because he doesn't trust blogs that sometimes print bullshit?

Makes sense to me.

Best to kill them early instead of letting them possibly need food stamps.

Nicholson Is Out
Schaffer already scared out Nicholson.  So he's in. Plus: he's out having dinners in DC.  So he's in.  Plus: McInnis supporters are peeling off in just the last week. So he's in.

I banking on this, Pols....
Don't let me down.  I--nay--Colorado needs Schaffer to run.  He's not running in 2010--maybe it's Coffman, Mitchell, Knoedler, Penry, McInnis, Owen....who knows--but this is Schaffer's time.  Like Craig said above, "now or never."

2008 will not be as bad a year for the GOP.  I don't know if it will favor one side or the other but it won't be like 2006.  Schaffer can get close just by showing up.  If he decides to NOT mail it in he'll win.
