Dave Schultheis: Almost as Dumb as Jim Welker

by: Colorado Pols

Wed Oct 11, 2006 at 16:44:07 PM MDT

Republican Rep. Dave Schultheis (who is now running for the state senate) is quickly joining former Rep. Jim Welker as one of the best friends a Democrat could ever have. An e-mail Schultheis sent out after a tragic car crash that was, well, less than sympathetic (not to mention unnecessary) has been getting more and more media attention. From 9News.com:

A State legislator is being criticized for an e-mail he wrote after a fatal crash in Northern Colorado that killed two teenage boys and a baby.

The accident happened on Oct. 2nd when 17-year-old Tania Bustillos ran a stop sign and was hit by a pickup truck. Her brothers, 15-year-old Enrique Bustillos and 12-year-old Miguel Bustillos, and her baby, 3-month-old Destiny Munquiz-Bustillos, were killed.

In the e-mail to the Greeley Tribune, Rep. Dave Schultheis (R-Colorado Springs) questions the legal status of the driver and her parents.

In part of the e-mail, Schultheis writes, "Was the driver properly licensed? Was the vehicle properly registered and insured? Was this person the child of parents in the U.S. illegally? Or was she here illegally?"

Schultheis says he never intended the e-mail to be published in the paper or on its Website and says he was simply asking the questions of his constituents.

"I would apologize for the timing of the question, but not for the questions themselves, because they were questions from a constituent, so I usually try to answer those as quickly as I can," Schultheis said.

Huh?

Schultheis, who lives in the Colorado Springs area, had questions from a constituent about illegal immigration, or this car crash, and felt compelled to send an e-mail to...the Greeley Tribune? Come again?

Uh, Dave? You should probably stop talking now.

No, no!
Let him keep talking.  Keely Marrs needs all the help Schultheis can give her to overcome the R registration advantage in the district.

Heard Keely on Jay Marvin's show this morning; she was very reluctant to take on a personal response to Schultheis's self-condemning e-mail, probably because she didn't want to take political advantage of an already tragic situation.  She did eventually put out a short statement, and I expect that's all she'll say unless pressed - or unless Davy goes even more overboard into the absurdly offensive.

What Is The Deal . . .
With these people and such a lack of accountability?  You send the email - to a newspaper - then start sputtering and backpeddaling when people take notice of how inhumane your comments are?

Exploiting a tragedy to show what a hardass on immigration you are is pretty sweet though.  Yep, this guy is tough on the issues - Schultheis won't even let the bodies get cold before he starts hammering away at those damn illegals and protecting the state coffers for all of Colorado's families!  Illegals technically aren't even human since they aren't citizens, so why is everybody in a huff?

That's the point
They preach accountablity and practive none.  "Do as I say, not as I do" is the Republican slogan.

It's either the over-zealous volunteer, or a pesky constituent doing and saying things that are stupid...not the elected represented who campaigned on being a responsible representative of the people.

Anyhow, we are at war with Mexico...
I mean illegal immigrants from mexico...
I mean anyone with a latino last name...
I mean my constituents are concerned about citizens with latino last names....

Stereotypical Schultheis, just another zenophobe representing "all" the citiznes (who are caucasian, american flag necktie wearing, republicans).

What an embarassment!
As a Colorado Springs voter, it is embarassing to have Dave Schultheis represent us.  He needs to withdraw from the race and apologize for his many years, in the legislature, of pontificating as opposed to actually getting things done.

A slave stood behind the conqueror, holding a golden crown, and whispering in his ear a warning: that all glory is fleeting. - George Patton

Schultheis is a coward, blowhard, and attention-seeker
Just like his patron saint, Tancredo.

Schulteis is so far right he falls off of the edge
I watched Rep. Schulteis in hearings in the capitol in the last session during Rep. Morgan Carroll's ethics bill hearings.  Frankly, I didn't know who he or some of the other legislators were, but I soon figured him out.

There were some "housekeeping" matters that were taken care of first.  Often Dangerous Dave was the ONLY rep voting "No", of either party.  He definitely hears his own drummer....or voices.

Then came the witnesses, most just ordinary citizens.  The Repugs generally assaulted this bill, but Schultheis was in a class by himself...actually, no class.

He took the "The best defense is a great offense" tactic, feigning great indignation that someone would call his or any rep's ethics into question.  He protesteth so much that my thinking was, "Why?"  I believe Shakespeare answered that.

As to the email to the Greeley Trib, when it started a firestorm, Schulteis - a member of the "personal  responsibility" party - blamed the Trib for posting it!  Like, DOH, Dave!  If you are that stupid to think it wasn't for public consumption (it's a BLOG, nitwit) you shouldn't run for dog catcher.

Please Dave, post more mails!  Open your mouth frequently!

Perfectly Valid Questions
Don't care for Mr.Schulteis, but his questions are valid and deserve an answer. Cry foul all you like but the fact remains that illegals are a burden to the taxpayers of this state. It's well past time for this problem to be dealt with!!!!

So you, out of the blue
...would write that letter to a newspaper - who's bound to publish it - before the bodies are even cold?  You wouldn't, say, ask the police - a government agency that at least wouldn't publicize your callous inquest?  Or, failing that, wait a couple of days and see what shakes out on its own before charging forward without any real basis for your leading questions?

FYI, the family is legal and is in the process of gaining their citizenship.  The driver's license was valid and in order - everything was kosher.  All of that could have been determined without making an inquiry to the 4th Estate.

Shultheis is an ass for doing this.  And his defenses don't add to my confidence in his moral fitness, either.

illegal immigration a problem
but to approach it like Schulteis did is plain moronic.

His questions weren't vaild.  If the people involved in the accident were named Smith - this sorry excuse for a legislator would have had no comment.  This small man wanted to get political with someone's misery.  Plain and simple, end of story.

If you/he/anyone wants to tackle illegal immigration, great, but Schulteis doesn't do a thing to help with the solution.  I'm sorry Coldawg, if you think the questions were valid, you're barking up the wrong tree.

And keep in mind...
Following up Car 31's comments about if the victims were white and named "Smith" - they could have been illegal immigrants too. We do get them from Canada, Ireland, and Eastern Europe too (though "Smith" isn't a common name in Poland obviously).

BTW coldawg, when are you going to fix your keyboard? Your exclamation point has been sticking for months. Get a job and buy a new keyboard already.

DIE!
You know to be honest you can stick your whining about illegals where the sun don't shine.  I am so sick of hearing this infintile sobbing and blubbering over a NON issue.

Dave Is The Problem
Guys like this are the reason that we're treading water on immigration.

Instead of rolling up their sleaves and drafting real and feasable policy solutions, they prattle off acerbic and dehumanizing rhetoric and insane stunts like this.

These guys talk about immigration all day long and foam at the mouth over illegals, but do they ever actually do anything to improve the situation?

Oh wait, there's that wall idea floating around.  Brilliant,  that'll fix everything.  In the mean time keep electing these guys so we can keep attending anti-Mexican pep rallies.

I use to think Schultheis was Moe.........
but I'm beginning to think that he might really be Curly while Kevin Lundborg is Moe......what does everyone else think?  (Of course, Welker is Larry)
