Federico Pena Endorses Romer for Mayor

  • by: Colorado Pols

With about three weeks to go in the race for Denver Mayor, there aren’t many significant endorsements left to be made…but this is definitely one of them.

From a press release from the campaign of Chris Romer:

Today, Former Denver Mayor Federico Peña, who served as both Secretary of Transportation and Secretary of Energy under President Clinton, endorsed Chris Romer for Mayor of Denver.

“Almost thirty years ago, I launched my own campaign for Mayor on the banks of the Platte River,” said Peña. “I challenged Denver to Imagine a Great City and we built the Central Platte Valley. Today, I am choosing this same location to fully and enthusiastically endorse Chris Romer for Mayor. He will carry forward our vision for fully developing neighborhoods across Denver including those along the South Platte.”

While Pena did endorse former Mayoral candidate James Mejia, who has since backed Romer, it was not a foregone conclusion that Pena would also back Romer. Though he is always courted, Pena makes relatively few endorsements in political races (compared to former Mayor Wellington Webb, who, rightly or wrongly, endorses a candidate in seemingly every race in which he is asked). Pena’s endorsement will help Romer in two very important areas — among Hispanic voters and among progressives, who remember him as much for his Cabinet positions under former President Bill Clinton as anything he did as Mayor.

Among people who travel a lot, Pena’s endorsement may be a mixed blessing; spend enough time at DIA, and you’re probably sick of Pena Boulevard.

Full press release after the jump.

“I am humbled and honored to have the endorsement of Secretary Peña, a man who has not only meant so much to our city but to our nation,” said Romer. “I want to carry Secretary Peña’s legacy forward to revitalizing Denver’s economic engine, attracting jobs and putting Denverites back to work.”

We need to expand Denver’s prosperity to the people who are being left behind. We need to ensure that every child in Denver has access to education and the opportunity it brings. With people like Secretary Pena and James Mejia supporting me, I know we can make that happen.”

“I endorsed Chris Romer in the Mayoral race because I see him as the best candidate to support the people of Denver,” said Mejia. “Chris shares my commitment to positively affect Denver through strong public policy like the Platte River Redevelopment plan.”

The Platte River plan builds on the shared vision of Secretary Peña and James Mejia. It includes:

Development of the South Platte River from Overland on the southern border of Denver, Vanderbilt Park/the former Gates Rubber Plant, Sun Valley, continued development of Confluence Park, and River North.

Each development will incorporate expanding/developing parks and mixed use development.

Two proposed sites integrate transit oriented development at FasTracks stops.

In developments that include established neighborhoods, like Sun Valley, the residents will not be displaced but rather included in the planning and will have the ability to stay in the neighborhood if they choose.

OK, but seriously. Kendra Sandoval, Paul Sandoval’s daughter and paid Hancock staffer, showed up yelling.

I’m completely willing to not hold this against Hancock, except in poor training. If you’re campaign is going to be “positive”, you might make sure your team knows, too.

  3. “birther boyles,” Hancock new BFF, announced on his show  today that not only does he endorse Hancock but so does Tancredo…..

“birther boyles” also is a global warming “deny-er” and has a convoluted take on evolution…ie. the dinosaurs evolved into  snakes…up in Aspen.

“birther boyles” in addition to BFF Hancock,  also is a great supporter of Jerome Corsti and World Net Daily…if Hancock doesn’t make the mayor’s office, there may well be a place for him in the birther movement…

I’ll give you a pena and raise you one birther boyles………..and we shall see who wins.

    1. I know you listen to a lot of talk radio, so I take your word for it, but this kind of blows my mind.

General rule:  If Tancredo is fer it, I’m agint it.

    2. I know you listen to a lot of talk radio, so I take your word for it, but this kind of blows my mind.

General rule:  If Tancredo is fer it, I’m agint it.

      1. birther boyles is all over the story this am..thursday.  Hancock is on the show at 8am.  Tancredo is supposed to be on, too.  I don’t know if they will be together.

Meantime, birther boyes’ other BFF – jerome Corsit and Joe Farrell (WND) are appearing.  The general tone is that the President is a liar, a fraud – out to fool the little children of America -and born in Kenya….

I know it is all funny…except Hancock is known by the company he keeps and this company is not company I want to associate with….

I was a Hancock supporter…I am probably just going to leave that part of the ballot blank.

  4. How can you sign off on a deliberately misleading, negative attack ad, and then chastise your opponent for practicing “the politics of personal destruction”?

    Romer is an ass, IMO.

    1. They’re both asses, IMO.

And, FWIW, Hancock has been taking swipes at Romer at every debate since they started. That kind of “what do you expect from an Investment Banker?” without backing it up is also an attack. Or cowardice. Granted not in ad form, but just as shitacular. So it’s an apt description of Hancock’s campaign. Also of Romer’s. (See the statement above.)

      1. and I see your point.

However, how many people do you think watch or read about the Mayoral debate, as opposed to watch the morning news (where I saw Romer’s lie ad this morning at the gym)?

There’s a massive difference between reaching the wonks who watch debates and reaching the everyday slobs who have the ads forced upon them.

“He did it first” isn’t an acceptable excuse.

        1. And neither is fewer people seeing it. Two men rob a bank, one does it at night, the other in broad daylight. Which is right?

          So asses. Both of ’em.

I don’t see your point. Sorry. Especially when the meme is something about integrity. But that’s just me. I’m guessing that you’re a Hancock supporter and will only lean toward him being just as wrong. If so, I actually give you kudos for even coming close. No snark intended.

          1. I like Hancock, supported him in the general, but it was mostly borne out of not wanting to see a Mayor Romer. I don’t trust him, his intentions, or the words that come out of his mouth.

Hancock, to me, is more representative of the city and more understanding of its needs. I am a graduate of Manual High School, and liked seeing him take the lead on the re-opening, working within his community to get things done, etc.

Romer, to me, is looking for his next political job, and sees the Mayoral office as a stepping stone, nothing more. Just my personal opinion, in case you’re wondering where I’m coming from.

              1. I suppose, but there’s a difference between someone seeing it as nothing more than a stepping stone, and someone seeing it as a stepping stone where much good can be accomplished. That, to me, is the difference between Romer and Hancock.

                Just my opinion.

            1. But not arguable. 🙂

Except for the Manual High bit, but how the majority and minority sides of the school board work in this is NOT a fight I’d like to get into. I’m sick of the Board!

And WLJ is right, too. I’m not sure what makes Romer’s intentions so much more transparent to some people. It’s interesting (not worth arguing certainly), everything about Hancock screams 2016 to me. Weird how our brains work sometimes. I mean, we’re both seeing the same things and getting completely different things from it. Fascinating, but too big for me today!

See you later, Tobias. Best of luck.

  5. You can just follow me around and post to whatever I say….

I hope you get paid well….and which campaign would that be????

I don’t like birther boyles.  I don’t vote for anyone who seeks his approval.

If you have a problem with that, deal with it.
