What you can do to fight back this week (September 11)

  • by: ProgressNow Colorado

Late last week, a scandal erupted after the official Twitter account for the Colorado Republican Party launched a “bizarre” and vicious attack on one of the nation’s oldest and most important civil rights watchdogs. [1] With racism and hatred against LGBT Americans on the rise since Trump took office, the Southern Poverty Law Center has done the same thing they’ve done for almost 45 years: calling out the people and organizations responsible for spreading hatred.

The response from the far right? Shoot the messenger.

The attack on the SPLC by the Colorado Republican Party is part of a pattern. When fact-checkers scrutinized Trump’s campaign promises last year, Republicans attacked the fact-checkers. Now that civil rights groups are pointing out the undeniable connection between extremist hate groups and Trump’s rise to power, Republicans attack the civil rights groups.

We need to know how far up this goes. The chairman of the Colorado GOP is refusing to back down from these attacks on the SPLC despite outrage from local civil rights leaders including the Denver Ministerial Alliance. Every Republican in Colorado now needs to answer one simple question: does the Colorado Republican Party speak for you?

Priority #1 this week: call Reps. Mike Coffman at 202-225-7882, Scott Tipton at 202-225-4761, Doug Lamborn at 202-225-4422, and Rep. Ken Buck at 202-225-4676–and then Sen. Cory Gardner at 202-224-5941–and ask them if they support the Colorado GOP’s attacks on the Southern Poverty Law Center. Tell Coffman and Gardner that the solution for the Republican Party is not to attack the SPLC, but to take whatever action is needed to ensure hate does not dictate the Republican Party’s agenda.

Once that’s done, here are more ways to take action this week:
