  1. Climate change does not cause hurricanes to form;but it does make them more frequent and stronger . The science is getting more precise. As the ocean warms, there is more moisture in the atmosphere, and hurricanes pick up water and destructive force. As sea levels rise, flooding from storm surge gets worse.

If you’re in the path of a hurricane, there is no place to stand “upwind”.

  2. Forget about staying upwind. If you want to learn what the real "deep state" is and how the far right is using their dark money to try and make the US a one party state, read this book:  "Ratf**ked: The True Story Behind the Secret Plan to Steal America's Democracy," by David Daley.

Learn about the gerrymandering that allowed the far right, using the Republican Party, to take over legislative seats in selected states to get to where they now control both houses in 32 states. They expect to keep the House next year. When they get to 37 legislatures, they can move to repeal the 17th Amendment allowing the far right to keep control of the Senate. Even if an elected is a regular conservative, they still get primaried as not being "conservative enough." They elected Trump, but can't fully control him. Better hope he stays around because Pence is the "anointed one." And the Dems are oh so complacent, thinking the House will just fall their way next year………

  3. Florida residents (and Michael Moorecall on Trump to open Mar-a-Lago as a shelter for hurricane victims.

Mar-a-Lago has 3' thick walls and is anchored to coral. It's withstood hurricanes before. When Trump took a $17 million insurance payout in 2005 for damage from Hurricand Wilma, no one could remember anything other than a few lost roof tiles and needing to re-landscape the golf courses. It was fraud, of course.

If Mar a Lago is not submerged, he should open the 126 room palace,  as a shelter. Obama would.

      1. Well, at least it's insured. Guess the Federal Government is good for something, after all. The flood insurance program has never been fully funded – wonder if Trump will bankrupt it, as he did the Secret Service?

The Presidency of the United States is merely an opportunity for a good hustle for this man.

          1. Did you catch Cory Gardner's town hall in Grand Junction, Duke?

He was apparently alternately praised (for getting on board with DACA) and pummeled ( for supporting the "tax reform" Trump is trying to get through while everyone's focused on natural disasters).

There hasn't been much video or reporting on it, just a couple of short video clips. Wondered if you or someone you know managed to get there.  Cory was sneaky about it, posted the news on his website 9/6 for a Saturday 9/8 10 am town hall. I usually try to record the audio feed, but was working (like most people) when this happened.

Still, 250 people showed up. Not bad for a Friday morning with barely any notice in Mesa County.

            1. No…I didn't manage to see the show, but heard that the friendly confines of Mesa County weren't quite as friendly as usual to the Con Man.

Locally, the O&G circus seems to be ramping up and the local media is working as hard as possible to be the bestest cheerleaders they can be. They really up their game when bigwig Republicans come to town. During the Club 20 Cheer Rally this time around, one of our local newscasters, (our worst one, incidentally) echoed a new industry talking point that "the Western Slope and oil and gas development go together like peanut butter and jelly".

I wonder how long it will be before Lauren Klenda on CBS becomes a talking head for the Oily Boys. She certainly gets intoxicated by their presence. But she would not be the first local media type who saw dollar signs and went to work for the Petro Kings.

  4. Meanwhile, NW Colorado is still burning up…. and we're all breathing the smoke. Wildfires are burning in Routt, Grand, Moffat, and Jackson counties.  This mirrors the spread of fires across six western states.

Photo from the Big Red Fire courtesy of the North Routt Fire Protection District’s Facebook page.

    In Colorado:

    Deep Creek is contained 39%.

    Big Red is contained 20%.

There are also smaller fires at Trapper's Lake (Flat Tops area) and Himes Peak, and off Moffat County Road 57.

Mill Creek fire is 65% contained.

The smoke is so bad that it’s actually cooling things off and helping the firefighters.

  5. Elaine Duke, the Acting Homeland Secretary, seems competent. One thing to be thankful for.  But she has no good news. 5 million without power, days until national guard can get in to resupply and rescue. She's keeping expectations down.

She was originally an Obama nominee. Probably explains her competence. Became Acting Sec when General Kelly moved up to be Trump's Chief of Staff.

  6. Irma is weakening.

That's  good news, from arguably the best meteorologist in the US (and a good thing, too, since Irma is heading to Alabama next):

Closing out the mamajama* Weekend Thread* here's something to make you smile:

    * Other Polsters seemed to have little to say, even the usual WhackATrolls. I’m done now.

    1. I wonder if Roy Moore will enlist the help and prayers of Gordon Klingenschmidt and ask the Almighty to redirect Irma away from Alabama and towards that Den of Inequity, Atlanta, instead.

If it works, it will clinch the GOP Senate nomination for Roy.

The Lord works in mysterious ways.
