  1. Dio, to continue our discussion of Pharisees under this thread, hyam maccoby, Revolution in Judaea, argues that they were indeed masters at splitting hairs, but only because they wanted to humanize a law that dealt out death for so many offenses, including homosexuality.  Modern defense lawyers do the same in capital cases.

Further evidence that Jesus the rabbi was himself a pharisee is in the famous story of the woman who was to be stoned to death for adultery.  Jesus did not challenge the law.  He merely insisted that only someone without sin himself was worthy of casting the first stone.

Pharisitical hairsplitting of the first order.  And it saved a life.

    Great reading, Maccoby.

  2. Here's a nice bit of news.

Democrats Hold Iowa State House District That Went Heavily For Donald Trump

Democrat Phil Miller, a 65-year-old veterinarian and president of the Fairfield school board, defeated Republican Travis Harris by about 9 percentage points in House District 82, which covers a southeastern stretch of the state.

Miller’s win to replace five-term Democrat Curt Hanson, whose death in June sparked the special election, would not ordinarily be notable.

But the district picked Trump over Hillary Clinton by some 21 percentage points in November, prompting Democrats to hail Tuesday’s win as a major victory. Miller also bested then-President Barack Obama’s winning 2012 re-election margin in the district by about 7 percentage points.

All politics is local.  The key will always be good candidates vs. relying on coat tails.
