What you can do to fight back this week (April 24)

  • by: ProgressNow Colorado

Colorado is one of the most educated states in America. We are home to some of the most important federal scientific research facilities in the nation—especially critical research into renewable energy and the effects of human-caused global climate change. Our Colorado way of life is dependent on a beautiful natural environment, access to public lands, an innovative entrepreneurial and technology sector, and cutting-edge research at our world-class institutions and federal labs.

So when Donald Trump threatens to slash funding for scientific research into these and so many other important challenges facing our world today, Colorado doesn’t take it lying down.

On Saturday, tens of thousands of Coloradans once again gathered in Denver’s Civic Center Park to tell Donald Trump to stop threatening basic scientific research. It was by far the largest protest march in Denver since the Women’s March in January. Across the globe, similar protests called for evidence-based policymaking from our leaders, and acknowledgement of the challenges all of humanity faces—challenges that only science and reason can hope to solve.

This is more than a political struggle. The essential battle for reason in the face of ignorance is what we fight today as we resist Donald Trump’s agenda. The ideals we uphold in protest against Trump are bigger than us, and bigger than Trump. This is a fight for the basic values of equal opportunity, fairness, community, and freedom that have defined the American experience, and helped bring about the free and prosperous society we take for granted today.

Keep fighting. Keep showing up. Working together, let’s show everyone why America remains the great beacon of hope in a troubled world.

Here are ways to fight back for the week of April 24:

The protests in Colorado, and across the nation and the whole world this past weekend, are a ray of hope at a very difficult moment in our history. Your persistence in the face of bad news, bad weather, and the presumption of every pundit in America that these protests would fizzle out after a few weeks, are proof that America will survive Donald Trump. History will look favorably on what we’re doing today. Keep the resistance going as long as it takes.
