What Indeed, Shawn Mitchell?

by: Colorado Pols

Mon Feb 09, 2009 at 14:03:11 PM MST

A revealing little exchange between GOP Senators today, courtesy the Rocky's Live from the Legislature blog:

It was a war of words Monday morning between Republican Sens. Shawn Mitchell of Broomfield and Nancy Spence of Centennial.

Mitchell asked for an explanation of a bill that expanded the list of students who qualify to receive free lunches. The sponsor, Sen. Paula Sandoval, D-Denver, explained it now included early-childhood education programs.

Spence then said she thought it was "unconscionable" to deny meals to hungry kids.

Mitchell fired back that all he wanted was an explanation of why the list was being expanded, "not a rhetorical slap in the face."

A furious Mitchell then left Spence a nasty note on her seat that said, "If a fiscally conservative colleague responds by saying 'it's unconscionable to keep pre-school students hungry' what do we need Democrats for?"

Depends on whether or not you agree, Senator.

Nancy Spence too tough for Shawn?
Shawn Mitchell gets his feelings hurt by a 72 year old grandmother and responds by leaving a snippy note? Passive aggressive much?

What a total wanker. The fact that he's considered a credible voice for the state GOP just goes to demonstrate how terribly short on intellect and charisma the state GOP is. The soft bigotry of low expectations have been a boon to Mitchell's career.

Shut Up They Explained
Uh...I voted for the bill. Needed some additional info which another member gave me. We've had school lunch programs for generations. For a bill to expand elligibility, it's a reasonable question who we've discovered in 2009 that wasn't covered before. "If school children are hungry, it's unconscionable to vote against this bill." doesn't really answer the question.

Or, Steve, does it just take intoning the word "children" and you go all zombie and push the "yes" button?

BTW, your soft bigotry and low expectations of 72-yr old grandmothers are showing. Nancy Spence could kick both our @$$es.

So, why your nasty note to Spence?
...were you just explaining the reasonableness of your question to her?

[ Parent ]
Yep
...and the unhelpfulness of her answer. When you ask a genuine substantive question, it would help the atmosphere if the response isn't to be implicitly accused of starving children, especially by a friend and caucus mate.

[ Parent ]
and did you perceive your question "what are dems for?" to be helpful to her?
...to be helpful to anyone?

[ Parent ]
Sounded like
a pretty explicit accusation to me.

[ Parent ]
For all of your answers so far
You haven't really answered the question.

Why do you want preschool kids to starve?

Anything less than a full and complete answer to that question is bullshit.

When I use lots of words, they always form an analysis (and, while producing high volume, also produce high information-density).

Unfair
I think it's fair to ask Shawn about the note. But I also think it was fair for him to ask what it was for and ask for details. And I think it's wrong to say he hates children because he asked for details

Where you gonna go for business reporting software?

[ Parent ]
You do
I don't.

Let him answer the question.

Tacky thing to do
It was in poor taste to leave that note. End of story.

While we're at it.

Shawn Mitchell likes to have the last word on most debates. Even if it's for no other reason than to hear the sound of his own voice.

The man is really slimey and so unpleasant.

[ Parent ]
good to hear from you Senator
Glad to see you respond.

You two are both Colorado Senators, presumably you could show her some respect by speaking to her like a colleague and not leaving a note as though she was some child misbehaving at school.

[ Parent ]
Now now, Senator...
Nobody thinks you really want children to starve. Kids are nice, you like kids. You like to feed kids.

It's just a good thing in general for Republicans that numbers don't much resemble children, because if you perceived the relationship between the two at times when it's not harshly pointed out to you you'd have a very different voting record.

Minority cracking up
As Twitty pointed out, the Senate Minority Office releases are a constant litany of defeat and humiliation suffered at the hands of the ruling Democrats. And the SMO reaches deep into Joe's thesaurus to find different ways to say Republicans are furious, outraged, incensed, etc.

It sounds like they're adopting an angry-white-Limbaugh posture and can't uncoil from it even when it's one of their own asking questions.

It's sad/funny
They have to know how stupid it looks. I mean, every day on that sham of a website they have, there's Brophy with his hand on his chin looking like he just got run over by a Mack truck. Harvey looking defeated. Schultheis looking sadd yet still sinister.  My wife thinks I'm a nut for wasting my time looking at their sham of a website. I mean, shit. These idealogues are the face and soul of the Republican Party. Penry can pretend to be Mr. Statesman but this is the bunch of right wing nutjobs he has to lead. Good luck with that.

At least in the House, Mike May had the good sense to see that Balmer would hurt them. It's sad when Mike May looks like a moderate next to the guys Penry has in his chamber.

Not that I think Penry is a boy scout. Hardly.

All you Dems..
So concerned for the R's.

It's so sweet.

"Kevin and I will keep them out somehow -- even if we have to redefine what the peer-review literature is!"

[ Parent ]
It's a little like watching a train wreck . . .
the fascination keeps you looking.

Party Line
I think this shows a difference in mentality overall between Democrats and Republicans. You can see it quite often at both Federal and state levels.

Democrats tend to vote based on their feelings and convictions about a particular issue, causing them to cross party lines relatively often. Republicans don't tend to do so quite so often. You can even see it on the stimulus package passing the House. All of the R's voted in opposition while 18 D's broke party line and voted "No."

This little love letter from Senator Mitchell shows the typical intolerance within the Republican party at voting your conscience rather than along an ideological set of principles that is more important than feeding starving children.

your right on
Our D's here in Colorado also often times vote their conscience which may at times be at odds with some of their party. A good example was the 4 democratic senators that voted with R's on an amendment that did not allow tolling on existing highways on the Senate FASTER transportation Bill ( I believe 2 of those Senators may have conceded later and the tolling portion was included on the Senate Bill)

This is my position on the Senate "FASTER" Transportation Bill:

I agree we need to fund important transportation projects such as building out the entire RTD FasTracks passenger rail system including the North Metro and Northwest Metro Lines, replacement of deteriated congested bottlenecks like the 84th ave./I-25 interchange/bridge. And I applaud both the Governor and the state legislature in their willingness to pass a bill that helps fund these important projects that will also stimulate the economy by bringing jobs and will be projects that will be a longtime benefit to citizens. However, the legislature should limit car registration fee increases. During this difficult recession our families cannot afford huge increases. A $10 or $20 increase would be acceptable but $30 and 40$ increases is asking too much from our families who are struggling. Tolling is also a sticky issue. I believe it would be wrong to toll I-25, I-76 or 36. However, tolling Pena Blvd. and using those new revenues to help pay for the complete RTD buildout and the fixing of our bridges, interchanges and roads would be accetable to the majority of Coloradoans. However, the bill should specifically state tolling on Pena Blvd. only or you will not only have legislators not liking the bill but the public will be outraged. Also, the priority projects should be interchanges experiencing the most congestion like 84th/I-25, RTD FasTracks complete buildout and other projects like the bridge at 104th/85 heading towards DIA that needs widened ect.......

Gov. and state legislators please consider this.

It is too bad
Had the Democrats not nominated a misogynist with a slew of restraining orders to his name Shawn Mitchell would no longer be in the Senate.

true! cuz Mitchell had never been elected before then

Welcome aboard Hula
Whether or not I agree with you, your credibility might increase with time.

that seat is pretty safe R with an incumbent
too much of Weld County in that Senate district for a D to win until there is an open seat. D has to win the Adams County portion big in order to win that seat.
