Hick Drops More Veep Hintage

  • by: Colorado Pols

With speculation continuing as to whether presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton might look west for her choice of a vice-presidential running mate, Gov. John Hickenlooper of Colorado seems to be inching rhetorically toward something you might call readiness. The latest in an interview with Denver7’s Marc Stewart:

Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper has been the focus of recent political chatter about taking on the role of Hillary Clinton’s running mate on the Democratic ticket.

Denver7 reporter Marc Stewart spoke with the governor about his future ambitions.

“I know you’ve not been approached by the Clinton campaign, but you’re not ruling this out either?” asked Stewart. “No, obviously if someone feels you would add great value to service to your country, I think you’d be a fool not to consider it very strongly,” said Hickenlooper. [Pols emphasis]

Whether or not Hickenlooper is himself being “considered strongly,” or just another also-ran on a long and speculative list, is something that only a handful of people close to the process can claim to know right now. Hickenlooper’s upswing in public events to promote his new memoir could be interpreted as a politically forward looking pre-campaign tour–or he might just be promoting the book.

We’ll keep our ear to the ground, but chances are we’ll all find out together.

  1. Put-Lease, like Hillary is going to pick a guy who drinks fracking fluid.

(And then there is the very young wife. Sorry but that is not going to play well in Mrs Clinton's house)

We are stuck with Capt Not Courageous until 2019

    1. It would be  the worst choice, guaranteed to make it that much harder to unite the HRC and Bernie wings of the party. I hope she's not tin eared enough to do it. But you never know with HRC . DWS is definitely tin eared enough.

  2. the dude is not ready for Prime Time. Make fun of Biden, but he's 10 times the politician and leader that Hick is. This would be one of those awesome bipartisanshipy picks that R's would solemnly praise (while holding back laughter) and that would leave Dem voters cold.

    1. Bipartisanship is a great quality for a governor in a purple state.   For VP, we need an attack dog.  Nominate one of my dachshunds!

  3. Hillary has all the people already in her squad that one would normally select a VP for.  She needs a good soldier who is relatively low maintenance and doesn't make her look bad.  Hickenlooper has shown us that he fits that bill nicely.  Barring any disqualifying skeletons in the wardrobe, I think he's a reasonable pick.

    1. well, Hillary doesn't have the left, though they are slowly coming around.Maybe it's time to revive the Julian Castro talk, just because Hispanics drive Trump bat-shit crazy!

    2. Completely disagree. She has to make a real gesture to the liberal wing. It doesn't have to be a far lefty but a center right Big Oil and Gas white guy?  She may as well just say.. OK I won and all you Bernistas can eat my shorts. If you don't like my pick get lost.

      1. I don't know how she would do that.  Which lefty senator would (a) want to be her VP (I mean that only in the invisibility sense), (b) isn't from a state with a Republican governor who would appoint that senator's replacement?

I don't see the math that makes the Senate less important that a pleasingly left-wing VP.  Other than those folks, all I see are relative moderates.  She could pick O'Malley, who is definitely liberal, as an in-between pick, but I'm not sure he would scratch the left's itch.

        1. klobucar and Franken, to name two, have democratic govs.   As to who wants it: hell, they all do when there is an actual offer on the table.   I want Elizabeth Warren to head a truth squad that dogs Drumpf everywhere and just drives him crazy.   But she does't have to leave the Senate to do that.

        2. First… see V's suggestions. Plenty would want to be the more progressive wing's standard bearer. Especialy someone young enough to have hopes of running as Prez  in eight years. Second, I never said it had to be a particular lefty. But with HRC being a 90s style triangulating centrist, the last thing she needs is someone like Hick who is well to her right, basically an Eisenhower era Republican.

  4. I can't tell who's injested more fracking fluid (the hard stuff) here, Governor DoLittle (for thinking he's being considered), or reporters like Stewart (who think he might be considered) . . .

. . . Anyway, didn't sweeps end in May, this is just Klondike and Snow fluff-mongering (minus the cute and cuddly)?

  5. In addition to the other lines of reasons "why not" –

     * I'd doubt Hickenlooper is willing to take his son and new wife into a nasty national campaign.

     * Do you really think he'd abandon his new Lt. Gov.?

     * I don't think Clinton wants to have a pick with Hickenlooper's odd stance on capital punishment or the inevitable distraction of government's role in marijuana legalization.
