Should Democrats boycott Home Depot?

by: Half Glass Full

Wed Nov 19, 2008 at 12:37:24 PM MST

I'm a Democrat and a businessman who supported and voted for Obama and Udall. Now, according to Home Depot's founder, I "should be shot."

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/...

Wow. What an asshole.

The Home Depot I shop at has a Lowe's just down the street. I think I'll be visiting Lowe's from now on: at least I won't get shot there.

What do you think: should Democrats boycott Home Depot?

Half Glass Full :: Should Democrats boycott Home Depot?

Should Democrats boycott Home Depot?
Yes: don't patronize people who want to shoot you
No: don't punish employees for old fart's idiocy
No, because he's right: Dems SHOULD be shot

Home Depot has always been shiesty
They gave 1.5 mil via PAC money, mostly to Rs.

And if we point out to them why their behavior sucks and that we won't shop there because of it, they are open to changing.

They seem to go back and forth between doing something good and doing something ridiculously bad.

This again brings up the topic of economic protest. I think its one of the last effective means of protest we have and if a company wants to give 1.5 million in PAC money to the political process, then they are no longer just a business, they are influencing the political process and are assigning themselves an identity according to how their money is spent. IMO there needs to be stronger regulations against that.

Not only that but they could maybe point that 1.5 million to getting better customer service. I'm sure everyone has a story about that. yes i know that site is from 1998

this reminds me of Bob Nardelli
He was the arrogant CEO of Home D, who refused to have his executive compensation tied to performance when Home D's stock went anemic and their sales started to decline.  Then Home D booted him to the curb, and he took a $ 210 million exit package with him.

Now where is he ?  Of course, Home D got such a good deal they apparently needed his expertise as a CEO over at Chrysler.  So this week he flew the Chrysler corporate jet over to DC to beg for a taxpayer bailout because things aren't going so well there either.

How do these people even get hired, and why are businesses so willing to throw millions at them ?  Who the hell knows.

racial slur alert
.
How can folks here be so sensitive to the use of "colored people" a week ago,
but not to this dig at another ethnic group ?
.

[ Parent ]
I was going to ignore it
but Barron brought it up.

Apparently it's not as anti-Semitic as it used to be. I wasn't really offended, but someone else might have been.

[ Parent ]
I'm sorry
I really had (and still have)no idea why thats offensive. It wasn't meant to be. I learned it from my Jewish friends-- yes, they are self-hating but, whatever.

Additionally, my father is often times best described by me, his family and his friends as an uppity, flaming queen (or worse??). Its meant as a term of endearment. Is this wrong? Not in our eyes. Its just how we roll. You could say thats our culture.

If it offends people, I'm sorry. I wasn't thinking. I was just lettin it flow. Hope you can jive with that. I didn't mean to shit on your parade.

Would it be better if I wrote "putz?"

I checked. I don't think any was intended either.

Sounds like an appropriate term to me...
Etymology: probably from German Scheisser, literally, defecator

We should do a petition or write letters
That guy should be fired. If a Democrat said the same thing about business owners not voting Democrat, the Right would be all over it. It would be a huge media scandal. He would probably resign.

But as always, things like this don't become big stories. I have to hear about it from much smarter sources--like Half Glass Full.

Is this Home Depot founder still in charge of or formally affiliated with the company?

I'm not as sweet as I used to be.

All I would do is go to the address you find here to do it.

I'm not so sure...
I bet if you poll all the CEO, founder, and other bigwigs of most major retailers they'd probably express similar sentiments as this guy. Maybe not so harsh, but all in all you'd find as hard right a bunch of (almost all) guys as you would at redstate.com. Boycotting Home Depot in favor of Lowe's may make you feel better about not giving money to this creep, but if the board of Lowe's all pretty much feel the same way, all you're doing is punishing this guy for not being more discreet.

Is the Home Depot founder on its Board?
...everyone seems to be assuming that the founder currently has a position of responsibiilty in Home Depot, but no one has substantiated that point.

I have not called for a boycott.  Those who have should support their call or clam up.  That's all I'm saying, lady!

Hey Gecko

I shop where the prices are good so unless Home Depot starts killing people as they come through the doors, I'll keep shopping there.  (But I also go to Starbucks once in a while, so I'm fair and balanced:)

[ Parent ]
Hello my friend.........
I will go to either Home Depot or Lowe's, depending on what I'm buying. lowe's has a better selection of wood but Home Depot has better deals on tools....

I have never been in a Starbucks but once. And that was job related. I am not a frufrulimpwristedmattedrinkinlibral, and usually giggle and laugh at them that do while I'm putt'n on by.

The only chain I boycott, and have done so for fifteen years or more, is 7/11. Once the Japs bought them out, I decided to treat them like Hondas.......let the commie lovin yuppies buy there.

You guys are amateurs.
Now if you really want to tell offensive jokes, and say insensitive things about, Jews, blacks, women, and just about any other sacred cow, you just draw a cute cartoon baby face, and give him the voice of a 40 year old homosexual with an English accent, and fire away. Nobody will say a thing, and instead of threatening to have you fired, you will make a few million dollars.  America,.. what a country!

stewie

Stewie: Duck, duck, (slaps Janet on the head) GOOSE!
Janet cries.
Stewie: Oh come on I barely hit you! See this is why people don't respect the WNBA!

Chris: Can I go now? Stewie's gonna help me with my math homework.
Lois: Chris...he can't help you with your homework, he's just a baby!
Stewie: And I guess you're a Rhodes Scholar yourself. Where did you graduate from again, the University of DUH?!?!?
Max Weinstein:I'll help you with your homework son.
Peter: My God!!! Is there nothing you people can't do, except you know... manual labor???
Lois: What a horrible thing to say! They built the pyramids!

Stewie: [speaking to a Latina maid] So which of the Latin countries are you from: the one with the civil war, the one with the cocaine, or the one with the fancy hats?

(Lois walks in on Stewie torturing a bully)
Stewie: We're playing house...
Lois: But that kid is all tied up!
Stewie: Roman Polanski's house.

Stewie: Ohhh! She has the voice of an angel...not to mention a balcony you could do Shakespeare from!

Lois: Oh, I haven't been on a college campus in years. Everything seems so different.
Stewie: Really? Perhaps if you laid on your back with your ankles behind your ears that would ring a few bells.

Bill Cosby: Stewie, what do you think candy is made out of?
Stewie Griffin: Sunshine and farts! What the hell kind of question is that?!
Stewie: I was under the impression the name of the show was "Kids Say the Darndest Things," not "Old Black Comedians Never Shut the Hell Up."

Stewie: I want pancakes!! You people understand every language except English! Yo quiero pancakes! Donnez-moi pancakes!
Click-click-bloody-click pancakes!!!

Stewie: I'm the dog. I'm well read and have a diverse stock portfolio. But I'm not above eating grass clippings and regurgitating them on the rug.
Brian: I'm a pompous little antichrist who will abandon my plans for world domination when I grow up and wind up settling with a rough trick named Jim.

Stewie (to Cleveland): Can I...Can I touch your hair? I'm gonna do it...I'm gonna touch it. Ooohoohoo it's like a sheep.

Stewie: Augh! What the hell do you think you're doing?
Brian: I'm cleaning myself.
Stewie: You were clean fifteen minutes ago, now you're just on vacation.

Stewie (reading the Bible): My, my. What a thumping good read! Lions eatting Christians, people nailing each other to two-by-fours. I say, you won't find that in Winnie the Pooh.

Eliza: Ew, your breath smells like kitty litter.
Stewie: I was curious!

Yep Honda is a pretty evil company
http://www.cnn.com/2008/US/11/...

"Honda's really helped this area as far as housing, retail sales, the restaurant business," said Tim Rogers, who has owned the Inn Between Tavern in Botkins, just up the road from Anna, for 33 years.

"People who are in here at night are also Honda employees. They have more money to spend. My business has been good since Honda came into the area."

I think those folks in Ohio might disagree with you, you racist piece of shit.

"you racist piece of shit"
I bet you wouldn't say that to my face.

Where do you get that from my saying I treat 7/11 like Honda?
You might think having foreign companies take over our entire country is just hunky dorey but I don't.
You say all is good because these foreign companies create jobs. You convienantly forget that they are eliminating jobs from American companies and sucking the life blood from our great country. All of the profits from the crap they sell is going overseas, you dumbass piece of shit.
So if boycotting Honda and 7/11 makes me a racist, I guess I am king fucking racist. I'll stick with GM, Ford, Chrysler, and Harkey. You can have your UAW killing Honda, Toyota, Subaru, Nissan, etc.

How's that fuck head.

I have a question.
Is Jap racist, or an abbreviation for Japanese?

Is calling someone a Brit racist, or an abbreviation for one who hails from Great Britain.

Were the American hero's who won WWII being racist when they yelled "JAPS 12 o'clock high" , or just not wasting the time for the bullets from those Jap zero's to train on their aircraft in the time it would take to say "Mitsubishi model zero Aircraft from the Japanese Royal Navy are bearing down on us a relative 360 degrees and above your field of vision"

Yeah I prefer "Japs 12 o'clock high" if I'm in the airplane, but that's just me.

I am not defending or condemning anyone. As I usually do, I just asked a question.  SO, I'll ask it again.  Is calling someone from Britain a Brit racist.  Yes or No.

Is calling someone from Japan a Jap Racist Yes or No.

What is the difference?

[ Parent ]
Newsie...
I didn't imply that you were defending or condemning someone. I answered your question about Jap (or rather, gave you the tool necessary to determine first-hand if it is). As far as the difference between this and calling a Brit a Brit, I imagine history can help you there. (Hint: one nation is full of people of a different race who were our enemy within living memory; the other is the motherland from whence our culture sprang.)

"Thank you for putting your rank political motives on display." - ArapaGOP

[ Parent ]
I'll bite, the difference is that
Brits call themselves Brits and aren't offended if you do as well.

The Japanese do not call themselves "Japs" and are offended if you do.

Simple enough?

The jobs "lost" by Japanese car companies being here
never would have taken place. The alternative is NOT that you only buy American (which my family has), it is that we would be importing those same Japanese cars and NONE of the jobs would be here.

I agree that it is not so good that profits from the Honda, et. al., plants go to Tokyo or wherever.  But money is so fungible, and people can buy Honda stock as easily as GM.

Don't you find it interesting that NONE of the foreign car companies with plants in the US are after bailout money?  Could they be doing something right? Making cars the American public wants?  Leading in hybrid technologies?

Don't forget how the Ameican companies were going to develop hybrid technologies way back in the Clinton era.  But they lost interest and when they woke up 15 years later, it was too late.  Ford had to pay hundreds of millions of dollars to Honda or Toyota for what we could have baked right here at home.

Fuck the Big Three.  Let them fail and reorganize.

"Politics determines who has the power, not who has the truth." Paul Krugman, 9/2010

[ Parent ]
I partially agree with you Pars
I am against any bailout of the big three but for different reasons mostly than you.
I am hoping doing so will show them that they, like the foreign companies, do NOT need the UAW and all of its past failed policies, extravagent health and retirement benefits, and high wage jobs.
If they went bankrupt this will happen........they will get rid of the unions, streamline their current car making policies, and walk the walk of the Japs.

I will always and forever drive only real American vehicles but since both of mine now are newer and in great shape, I don't foresee me having to buy new again. That said I really won't care if they go under completely.

Make sense?

NoBama .... NoBamaCare either

[ Parent ]
No...
because you assume that the big 3 have been running things just fine, instead of producing what people don't want. The unions have nothing to do with that.

Besides, they renegotiated those contracts so that talking point doesn't hunt anymore.

Why can't you get that?

"Thank you for putting your rank political motives on display." - ArapaGOP

[ Parent ]
Several twists to your beliefs, Gecko
One, is that the unions did anything more than get their members damned good wages. Should they have, in the 1960's, just said, "Sure, GM, we make enough, you go ahead and have higher shareholder dividends?"  No, the union contracts that are biting the industry in the ass seemed perfectly reasonable. I agree, they aren't now.  But don't lay blame because of wildly changing market circumstances.

Two, a lot of parts in your American car/truck come from Canada and Mexico. Lots!  And related to that, whole vehicles are now being made in Mexico that can be sold as "Made in America" because of gimmicks in NAFTA.  I've seen the Ford plant in the state of Sonora.  What's interesting is how small the employee parking lots are compared to the plants in America. (I used to have business at the GM plant in Van Nuys, CA.)

Three, and this is admittedly a guess, many of the Japanese cars made in America have as much content, if you include labor, as the Big Three.

Food for thought.
