Tancredo, Beauprez Eye Ritter

by: Colorado Pols

Mon Oct 27, 2008 at 13:09:39 PM MDT

We'd been waiting until after the election to discuss 2010 more in-depth, but it looks like the cat is out of the bag regarding one potential GOP challenger. Congressman Tom Tancredo, long thought to be considering a run for Senate in 2010, has instead focused his sights on running for Governor. The reason, we've heard, is that poll numbers show Ken Salazar to be a strong incumbent, while Gov. Bill Ritter is the weaker of the two statewide candidates. Tancredo wants to run statewide in 2010, and it makes more sense to take on Ritter than to challenge the stronger Salazar.

Also rumored to be seriously considering another run for governor in 2010 is - don't laugh - Bob Beauprez. But while Beauprez may be seriously considering a run himself, it's doubtful that any other top GOP backers would seriously take him seriously. You don't run the worst statewide campaign in Colorado history, as Beauprez did in 2006, and try to run again for the same race four years later.

Not a chance
No way Tancredo gets the nod. I'll put my money on Suthers or Penry.

Suthers will be lucky to keep AG
It really depends on how good a job Ritter does over the next 2 years. But if we Dems are viewed as doing a good job Ritter will win and Suthers will have a tough enough time holding on to the AG.

Penry has nothing better to do and has the ego to think he can take it - so yes, I think he'll be the likely one. It will be interesting to see if he runs based on his record (far right) or tries to pretend he's a moderate. That will tell us a lot about where the state GOP is going.

Tancredo - NFW. His entire schitk is immigration which is ok to many as a congressman, but not for someone who will be running the state. His political career here in Colorado is over - but I guess he needs one more race to learn that.

Where all the cool kids will be on Saturday - Code War!

[ Parent ]
To be fair
Tom had a few things to say about issues besides immigration.  The whole "nuke Mecca" thing wasn't immigration related.  He covers the whole base of issues that let him demonstrate his cultural supremacy.

Go Tom Go..........woo hoo

NoBama .... NoBamaCare either

Gecko's on board
Is Tom going to run solely on the issue of illegal immigration like he did when he ran for President?

[ Parent ]
he'll propose building a big fence......around the state of Colorado

[ Parent ]
LOL!
Just the sign Tancredo needs to see how he'll do in the race.

What about
Scooter McInnis?  By next year he will have made plenty of money in the private sector, plus most of his contacts at the fed level will have been dismissed, making him less than effective in his job of lawyer/lobbyist.

For my money, he is the only candidate that the GOP has that can run at Ritter or Salazar and he'll be given the choice of which race he wants by the state party.  He has name recognition and for the most part hasn't been sullied by scandal or the Bush regime.  I'll put my money on him.

Could be a contender
but the value of a lawyer lobbyist only INCREASES when your party is out of power -- it takes a real expert to negotiate those shoals.

If I had to guess, I'd bet McInnis is setting his sights on 2014, when he'll be a true elder statesman and the seat will be open.

[ Parent ]
Tom Wiens
It was speculated at the time when Wiens dropped out of the CD6 race that he was alson not running again for his state senate seat so he could prepare for the Governor's race

Retirement in action does not equal retirement of beliefs.

Spot on
Wiens didn't run for re-election to the senate to run for Governor.  Given Bob's disaster of a run in 2006, I don't know of many Republicans who are itching to have him run again.

[ Parent ]
This one's a long shot
Hank Brown. I doubt he'd run, but he would be a serious contender if he did.

There are Republicans
Who would love to see Hank run (even though they disagree with his politics - too moderate) but there is not a snowballs chance in hell that he would run.

McInnis is another matter. He might actually like to run, but at the end of the day, he won't want a primary, and the recent history in the Republican party of clearing the field for the annointed and then losing the general, will keep the true believers from accepting another annointing.  Also, the long list of Rs who want to run would also not accept another annointing.  Too many of these guys see 2010 as their best chance to run (except for Penry, but he may not be able to hold himself back).

As vulnerable as I think Ritter may be (more than he should be) the right-wing slugfest among the likes of Tancredo, Wiens, etc. will probably ensure that Ritter is re-elected.

As I noted in my diary and DavidTH did too in his, there will be too much finger pointing and denial among the true believers to allow for any kind of centrist/moderate R to get a nomination (unless his name is Hank Brown) if you could even find one at this point among the R office holders/high profile party members.

It will take another cycle of losses for Republicans before cooler heads prevail and this leming-like rush to the cliff of those who are convinced that the party is not 'conservative' (conservative in their eyes) enough begins to abate.

[ Parent ]
Dear lord
please please please let the Republicans run Tancredo for governor.  I'll eat my peas and pick up my socks if you in your infinite humor answer Republican prayers and let them nominate an extremist like Tancredo for the governor position.  Please please please.

LOL GG
By the way, I ended up voting yes on Amendment 51 because of your diary, and the discussion that followed it.

[ Parent ]
Appreciate it rsb
The odds are against it but at least it is raising awareness of the situation.

[ Parent ]
I voted 'yes'
and as a Catholic I took this from your diary to heart

"Whatever you do unto the least of these you do unto me"

I also convinced several friends to vote 'yes' as well.

[ Parent ]
Me too, and yes on 54 and 47
As Ewegen knows I supported this (51) early, because...

"Whatever you do unto the least of these you do unto me"

On 47. Forced unionism is un-American and to RCs should be seen as an immoral policy.

On 54. Everyone wants an accountable government where competition flourishes and insider deals are regulated heavily.

[ Parent ]
NO and NO
Libertad, you do know Jesus was a community organizer and if he wasn't being disenfranchised by a Republican Secretary of State he would probably vote No on 47, 49 and 54.

I can't wait for election day to be over to be rid of you and your spam.

[ Parent ]
We not only voted no on 54 and 47
we hacked into Coffman's computer and switched libertine's votes to no. ;-)

A Tancredo - Beauprez primary knockdown could be good entertainment
Penry has no statewide base.

"There are a lot of reasons not to elect me." Mitt Romney in a moment of clarity

neither
does Beauprez.. that is if you remember the last election.

Please dear god, anyone but Bobby Beau-Prez.

[ Parent ]
Did Ritter?
Somehow he went from DA to guv, right? I suppose Penry could do the same, if the party leadership gives him the nod.

Personally, I'd like to see one of the more moderate, practical west-slopers run (i.e. Al White). Then we might have a campaign actually based on issues other than abortion and gay marriage.

Its just like Further, but with tax cuts! - Fidel's Dirt Nap

[ Parent ]
If Al loses his Senate race
it would be difficult for him to jump in a Governor's race.

Moreover, he always thought he would get a primary, because the right-wing do not like him.  He bucked the party leadership too many times in the House.

The true-believers do not see him as a true believer and that will make it impossible for him until things change in the Republican party

[ Parent ]
Ritter's base was the population center
Penry's is not

make it a menage a Musgrave!
Since Mad Cow will be out of a job come this Jan., maybe she can make it a three-way primary race with Tanc and Both Ways!

Only if
you throw Schaffer into the mix. The state GOP's demons battle it out.

Now THERE'S a mental image I really didn't need

So will Wadhams run
Tank's Guv campaign?

[ Parent ]
Now there's a winning combo
Tancredo with Wadhams running his campaign.  Ritter wouldn't have to spend a dime. He might even want to make a contribution.

we'll be treated to six months ....

McCain
McCain will be rested, and will have time to establish legal residency in Colorado - shoot, he may already own a house here.

He could start his campaign with a keynote address given at the headwaters of the Colorado River and explain that while he tasted Colorado water, he never ingested.

He may not know he has a house here
he can't keep track of them all.

Ali Hasan
He's got the bucks, and will have a bunch of left-over signs.

What's the age limit for being Governor?
Correct me if I'm wrong, but Ali's under 30 isn't he? I think he'll be 30 by 2010...

I think it's 30.
There's a measure on our ballot to lower the age from 25 to 21 to be allowed to run for the State Assembly.

[ Parent ]
Bring 'em on!
There's that smell again.  An election with Bob Beauprez must be coming around again....
I'm surprised to hear about Tancredo. I thought Tanc wanted to continue working out his racial issues by running against one of Colorado's Hispanic elected office holders, Ken Salazar.

Nah...
We need to erect a 30' high concrete wall around the state, with machine-gun manned checkpoints at the crossings. Tancredo is the man who can make that happen!

Do we know whether Tank

I know you threw it out in jest...
....but why not? Hero athlete, successful businessman,  does some charity, never left the State, and made a pretty harmless appearance with McCain.

Jack Kemp was a 9-term Congressman before he was the VP nominee. He wedged himself into Congress with his hero QB image....why couldn't it work for Elway with the Gov's job.

I'm just guessing...
...that perhaps old #7 isn't interested in running for office because there are some things he'd rather keep private?

My question is, besides Musgrave and Rowland, does the GOP not have any (reasonable) women in the farm system?

Sure seems like the same old white men are always discussed whenever this topic comes up.

What's Norma Anderson doing these days?
Rep. Amy Stephens has a good future, she just needs to start building name recognition.  Otherwise, Clapp is making a comeback and I laugh if the placement of her name is just right in a sentence.

[ Parent ]
I wonder why Salazar is polling better than Ritter.
...is there any policy differences between the two?  Is it personality?  Is Salazar just a better political player at this point?  Bitches like me wanna know.

I'm not as sweet as I used to be.

My guess
Salazar has been out campaigning across rural Colorado for Obama, who is very popular in Colorado right now, while Ritter has been taking a lot of big hits from Big Oil for his support of Amendment 58 (btw, vote Yes on 58).

However, I'm not sure the boiler plate politician like Tancredo can come close to connecting with Colorado as compared to the type of common sense and pragmatism we've seen from Ritter.

"Suddenly, it may be cool to be American again" - William J. Kole

[ Parent ]
I voted yes on that damn thing.
....but, regardless, it seems like Ritter had better pull his head out soon if he wants to scare off stiff competition.  My own opinion......based on sporadic observation, unscientific research, and Pinot Grigio .... is that Ritter lacks some political chops.  But, in this climate, he doesn't need much to win again.

I'm not as sweet as I used to be.

[ Parent ]
a lot can happen in two years
and we shouldn't get complacent even if the margin of victory for Obama and Udall in Colorado is wide. Ritter's been a less than dynamic guv so far, and Colorado is used to a stronger personality in the mansion. If things don't go perfectly for Ritter the next two years, and the GOP figures out how to nominate someone who isn't a complete nut, then the Dems are going to have their work cut out for them.

Yessir.
...I agree!

I'm not as sweet as I used to be.

[ Parent ]
If (and it remains a very big "if").....
...Boulder liberal Mark Udall wins comfortably (i.e., 8% to 10%), I wonder if Gentle Ken will see it as a sign that Colorado is moving towards the center-left, and that it's safe for him to move as well.

[ Parent ]
Is Udall "center-left"?
...I thought his latest claim to fame was being "dead-center"?

I'm not as sweet as I used to be.

The next threads comments
is anyone else having problems with that thread? I wanted to ask if that possible Republican candidates for Governor in 2010 was joke, because it sure looks one to me.

Seriously, the GOP's bench is empty and the re-runs are never as good as the original.

Tancredo too immature and radical, Beauprez has jumped the shark...
Tom Tancredo has made too many enemies within and outside his party to make a credible run for Governor. He barely squeaked into his 6th Congressional District in 1998, and after that won simply on name recognition and the fact that the 6th used to be solidly Republican.

Until idiots like Tancredo got voters so fed up that now it's evenly split between Dems and GOP.

No, the GOP needs to look elsewhere for a realistic candidate in 2010. Penry might fit the mold.

"Why not do the right thing for the American people, even though it's not exactly what we want." - Speaker Boehner

the GOP needs to look elsewhere for a realistic candidate
You mean like Utah? They have a surplus of Republicans, it's true.

Penry talks it up privately to enhance his stature, but he's too young, has no substantial base, and has never run anything. He's got his eye on the 3rd CD if Salazar get a federal appointment or declines to run in 2010, which is rumored. Penry's not running for governor in two years.

[ Parent ]
You can call me nuts, but Jake Jabs is going to throw his hat in.
He's the Pete Coors of furniture, and Colorado voters seem to respond well to the idea of a "CEO Governor."

Sure, he has some potential skeletons in his closet (accused of sexual harassment a couple of years ago), but you can't watch all these 47 ads and think he's just going to disappear from politics should the measure pass (or at least be close).

Mayors
Lionel Rivera, Ed Tauer, Randy Pye - Republican mayors of large cities who might want to step up.

Didn't Rivera...
run in that 63 person repub primary to replace Hefley?

Call me crazy, but anyone that loses to Doug Lamborn might have some trouble in future campaigns...  :)
