Sarah Palin = Janet Rowland?

by: Colorado Pols

Fri Aug 29, 2008 at 16:46:56 PM MDT

Is it just us, or does Sarah Palin for John McCain's VP remind you a little of Janet Rowland for Bob Beauprez's Lieutenant Governor in 2006?

If you recall, not long after Beauprez announced Rowland as his running mate, we learned that she had recently compared homosexuality to bestiality. Nobody knew anything about Rowland - including, apparently, the Beauprez campaign - and her selection just highlighted further Beauprez's disastrous statewide campaign.

Now, Palin is no Rowland, but the former has her own far-right ideas that McCain now has to deal with. As Colorado Independent reports, Palin supported the idea of teaching Creationism in schools when she was asked about it during her campaign for governor in Alaska:

Then in a classic McCain-style back-flip, a few days later Palin tried to take it back...

...She added that, if elected, she would not push the state Board of Education to add such creation-based alternatives to the state's required curriculum.

This is the person McCain thinks should be one heartbeat away from the Oval Office? As a former McCain fan, I'm actually quite sad about this, but his run for President has turned McCain from a maverick to just a mimic for the far right.

Creationism really isn't an idea you flip-flop about. Either you believe it should be taught in schools, or you don't. If you even entertain the idea that Creationism is worthy of being taught in schools, you've already crossed that line far enough - there's no going back from there.

A very distinct possibility
I'm guessing they didn't vet her much. We could easily end up with an item or two that make her a really big problem for McCain. The next couple of weeks will be interesting as the Dems dig.

Where all the cool kids will be on Saturday - Code War!

An item or two?
The most important item here is McCain's judgement. He failed today. He choose a running mate based on political expediency rather than presidential qualities.

This was a strategic blunder and as Palin is further vetted more questions about McCain's judgement will arise.

It is to say, an act of desperation rather than intelligence. He put his political aspirations ahead of what's best for America. He put the country second today.

[ Parent ]
And more research...
Again, the Alaska Daily News reports (h/t cityduck at dKos):
State Senate President Lyda Green said she thought it was a joke when someone called her at 6 a.m. to tell her the news.

"She's not prepared to be governor. How can she be prepared to be vice president or president? said Green, a Republican from Palin's hometown of Wasilla. "Look at what she's done to this state. What would she do to the nation?"

Green, who has feuded with Palin, brought up the big oil tax increase Palin pushed through last year. She also pointed to the award of a $500 million state subsidy to a Canadian firm to pursue a natural gas pipeline that's far from guaranteed.

House Speaker John Harris, a Republican from Valdez, was also astonished at the news. He didn't want to get into the issue of her qualifications.

   "She's old enough," Harris said. "She's a U.S. citizen."

Ringing endorsements from her home state.

Tougher in Alaska
Palin is being criticized by Alaskan politicians?  I'm not surprised.

Palin defeats the incumbent GOP governor in a primary, beats the former two-term Democratic governor in the general election, exposes corrupt practices by the Alaska Republican state chairman, turns down Senator Ted Stevens' "Bridge to Nowhere," and backs Rep. Don Young's opponent in the recent GOP primary.

I would have been more taken aback had she not been criticized by Alaskan politicians.  Obviously, she has "stepped on a lot of toes" in that state... both Republican and Democratic.

Nobody is perfect and nobody needs to be.

H. Jackson Brown, Jr.

[ Parent ]
Lyda Green is not establishment
She broke with a corrupt wing of the Alaska Republican party to form a coalition government in the state senate, created by Republicans and a majority of the Democrats. She was also anti-Murkowski in the primary, but didn't support Palin because she thought Sarah was too inexperienced.

The thing is, Palin isn't being criticized by Stevens...he's come out with a ringing endorsement of Ms. Palin for VP.

[ Parent ]
he's come out with a ringing endorsement of Ms. Palin for VP
Has Lisa Murkowski endorsed the woman who beat her daddy?
And have they figured out who becomes Governor if Parnells goes the Congress, and Palin becomes V.P.?

[ Parent ]
And the AG is an appointed position
So he wouldn't have had to face the voters. He (Talis Colberg) was a Palin appointee, and is also quite young.

[ Parent ]
Of Palin and Alaska...
On defeating the incumbent governor: Murkowski's approval rating approached Dick Cheney's, and she won a three-way contest with a plurality of the vote.

On defeating the Democratic governor (Knowles): she was still the Republican, and Knowles seems to have lost his ability to garner a majority of the vote.  (As one dKos poster put it: Murkowski is so far up Big Oil's a** you'd have to get a ladder to find his shoes; Knowles is so far up [their] a** you'd have to stand on Murkowski's shoulders to find his shoes.)

On corrupt practices: this is, on the surface, the best thing she's done in her career and the one positive that isn't laced with negatives.  Good for her.

On the Bridge to Nowhere: she was in favor of the Bridge.  When she finally saw how bad it was faring in public opinion, she agreed that Congress could remove it from the budget - but she kept the $250m that was allocated so that it could be used on other pet projects.

On supporting Young's opponent: Sarah Palin accepted money from VECO, and campaign support and endorsements from both Young and Stevens as recently as 2006 during the gubernatorial election.  She got her O&G board position from Frank Murkowski.  She's an opportunist, not a crusader.

Sarah Palin's nickname is "the barracuda".  Her reputation is one of aggression and turning on those who get in her way.  If you want to know why she's not well-liked, that's all you need to know.

"We're below sharks and contract killers." -- Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-S.C.), speaking on Congress's 9% approval rating

[ Parent ]
Two additional problems for her
She was a cheerleader - any guesses as to how long before we get clips up on YouTube. People are not going to be wild about a VP who comes across as just a couple of years after the cheerleader pics. The combination of minimal experience and she still looks pretty young makes it not that long a time from the cheerleading.

Second, TPM is clearly devoting everything they have to investigating her. My bet is by Tuesday we have a number of interesting new nuggets.

Where all the cool kids will be on Saturday - Code War!

Hey, GW was a cheerleader
Am I spotting a Republican trend here?  And as far as that creationism question, she must not be very big on public education in the first place. She home schooled all of her children.  Were her  extemely red state small town schools too liberal for her?  Or just too crappy because Republicans so hate to support public education.

[ Parent ]
The stuff over at TPM is damning
I don't care at this point what Wooten's major malfunction (perceived or not) was.  Palin is covering up the whole thing in the best fashion of Republican scandal.

First she says she didn't do it.
Then, when the Legislature contemplates investigating, she asks the State AG to investigate instead.
When the Legislature decides to investigate anyway, she locks up the e-mail records on the case under Executive Privilege.
Then, when a taped recording of one such contact turns up, she claims that some contacts were made without her knowledge that "may have given the impression" of pressure.
Then it turns out the AG she asked to investigate in order to preempt the Legislative investigation was one of those making the contacts.
Now, according to Monegan, the fired Public Safety Commissioner, not only did she know, she was among those making the contacts - in person, by phone, and by e-mail.  So was her husband, who went so far as to provide a "dossier" on Wooten to Monegan.

Monegan is handing over the evidence and talking directly to the Legislature's independent investigator, who is scheduled to wrap up his investigation right before the election.

Ouch.

More fun from Palin
- Mayoral performance. Palin, who portrays herself as a fiscal conservative, racked up nearly $20 million in long-term debt as mayor of the tiny town of Wasilla - that amounts to $3,000 per resident. She argues that the debt was needed to fund improvements.

- Stevens and Young, redux. Palin has distanced herself from the state's two most popular politicians, but both appeared at Palin fundraisers during her 2006 gubernatorial bid.

- The environment. As governor, Palin vetoed wind power and clean coal projects, including a 50-megawatt wind farm on Fire Island and a clean coal facility in Healy that had been mired in a dispute between local and state governments.

- And, maybe, censorship. According to the Frontiersman newspaper, Wasilla's library director, Mary Ellen Emmons, said that Palin asked her outright if she "could live with censorship of library books." Palin later dismissed the conversation as a "rhetorical" exercise.

McGovern didn't lose...
Because of Tom Eagleton. In fact, Eagleton was left as an option because so few people wanted to run with McGovern against Nixon. If McGovern had been stronger, or Nixon weaker, then Eagleton wouldn't even be a part of the discussion.

Good memory
McGovern tells how it happened on today's New York Times Op/Ed page. It's a great and bittersweet story.

The other reason was the Humphrey challenge to the California delegation kept the nomination in question until the last minute, so McGovern had a matter of hours to make a choice. McCain has had basically since February.

I wouldn't underestimate Palin...
She gave one hell of a speech, better than anything given at the DNC this week.

She has her skeletons. So does Joe Biden. So does John McCain. So does Barack Obama.

I think Creationism is absurd, but I still think that Palin is a better choice than most of you will give the Republicans credit for.

She definitely has helped out McCain's ticket. We'll see to what degree within the next week, probably by Monday.

Face it, the race has changed. Like it or not Sarah Palin brings a wildcard to the race that the Democrats did not want to see and certainly did not expect. As seen by the comments provided by Skyler.

McCain did not pick the from the established pool of Republicans. He picked someone from outside the Beltway. If you think this is not going to change the race you are kidding yourself.

Who have you
been inspired by, locally that is? Just curious.

"Suddenly, it may be cool to be American again" - William J. Kole

[ Parent ]
Plenty of candidates.
Ranging from Joan Fitz-Gerald to Andrew Romanoff, even Jared Polis. I've managed and worked on campaigns for mayors and city council-people, and I've been inspired.

Local races have candidates who speak actual, quantifiable, attainable solutions. There are no cameras, there isn't any press, and that, I think is what makes it truly inspiring. The purpose of the speech is inspiration.

I knew a stripper named Skyler once.  --TaxCheatGeithner

[ Parent ]
I think what you're looking for
is the one on one you get with the local candidates. That's just not possible in a presidential race - or in a Senate race is a high-pop state like New York or California.

And yes, when they are talking for the cameras more than the audience, it's not as perfect for those of you in the audience. But again, that's the nature of the beast.

With that said, Lincoln's Gettysburg address was written for the press and talked in generalities - yet is beautiful.

Sarah Palin's speech was a generic laundry list spelled out with no real emotion. I watched it a second time because of your post and was even less impressed the second time.

And I didn't catch a single "actual, quantifiable, attainable solutions." Plus her comment about they didn't want the bridge to nowhere and would build it themselves - she cancelled the bridge, but she kept the money.

Where all the cool kids will be on Saturday - Code War!

[ Parent ]
Wait
You're saying that Skyler is just looking for the "one on one you get with local candidates"?
Wasn't Skyler the one working on a presidential campaign (Gravel)? I think he was asked "who have you been inspired by locally"

I agree. Although I did hear some great speeches, thought Hillary's was great, I was looking for Obama to make a monumental speech and thought it was less inspiring than others he'd made. Maybe it's just that I find it hard to get worked up by all the excitement of a convention, R or D.

[ Parent ]
I worked closely with Senator Gravel...
One on one during the course of his campaign. Was I ever inspired by the Senator? Once. That's about as often as I've been inspired by Senator Obama.

It's not a lack of personal connection, it's just my nature, perhaps. Or perhaps more accurately, the nature of the game.

I almost always agree with you Skyler
But to say that this Democratic convention lacked great speeches is just flat wrong.

Obama is in the line of FDR, JFK, RR, and BC in his oratorical abilities.  Hillary's and Bidens speeches were excellent by any standard.

My standard of "great" is a speech that motivates people.  Plenty to go around with the Dems.

I will be very interested in the Republican oratorical bench.

McCain for Beer Buddy, Obama for President
McCain isn't a bad guy.  He is exactly the sort of person I'd like to sit down and have a conversation with over a beer (or whiskey, or other fun drink).

The problem is that we're not picking a beer drinking buddy.  We're electing the President of the United States of America.  We don't need a continuation of the last four years and if that's not what McCain is going to do why does he keep saying that over and over?

As for Palin, she's a great campaigner and she is not a bad person to be Governor of Alaska.  But she lacks the judgment to be a potential successor to the President.  It may work just fine to replace anyone who disagrees with you with a crony in Alaska, but this is national politics we are talking about.  Someone who's going to succeed to office when the President dies needs to display better judgment.

Honestly, for me, this is a great pick. Not so much for you. As Jonathan Atler put it:

"What is it exactly that the vice president does all day?" Palin offhandedly asked CNBC anchor Larry Kudlow in July. Kudlow explained that the job has become more important in recent years. Palin knows the energy crisis well, even if her claim on "Charlie Rose" that Alaska's untapped resources can significantly ease it is unsupported by the facts. But what does she know about Iranian nukes, health care or the future of entitlement programs? And that's just a few of the 20 or so national issues on which she will be expected to show basic competence. The McCain camp will have to either let her wing it based on a few briefing memos (highly risky) or prevent her from taking questions from reporters (a confession that she's unprepared). Either way, she's going to belly-flop at a time when McCain can least afford it.

Do you honestly believe she's politically ready for the big leagues, let alone ready to be the second in command in a crisis situation as VP?

What a disappointing and sad pick McCain made. He wanted his mavericky friend Joe Liebercrat and he forced into an arranged ticket with Palin.

I am amazed by this thread and others.  I truly can not understand how you people actually believe this woman is ready.

She has never been on the national stage and the pressure of this race will destroy her.  No one can come from beginner to the Super Bowl and perform well.  The republican VP candidate will perform miserably.

On another note can you Picture this woman sitting down with the British PM, the Iraqi PM or King Abdullah and being taken seriously.  The visual is ridiculous.

I am also concerned that John McCain would entrust this person to become the most powerful leader in the world and protect American interest.  Does she even know how a military works or deploys? Can you imagine her speaking to the Joint Chiefs?  I spent 5 years in the military - they are going to eat her up and spit her out.

Can you even imagine John McCain discussing policy with her?  This is not the type of women that will demand John McCain's respect.  He will cast her off as the lightweight she is.

Try as hard as you can to destroy her, but i listened to her speech....she is dynamite, and will bring needed energy, enthusiasm, and interst to this campaign, will continue to push the momentum already in McCains favor.....McCain has again shown himself to be a bold leader and his own man....this was brilliant.

Just listened to her speech
It wasn't bad.  It also wasn't up to the caliber of half of the major speakers at the DNC this week.  It had enthusiasm - which McCain sorely needs in his campaign.  And it is certainly stirring interest, if only that of piqued curiosity.

I find it odd that McCain only met her once before choosing her; that almost makes it seem like an arranged marriage rather than one built on a relationship.

And, while I think she tried to put a bright face and strong front on her candidacy, some of the talking points she used are sorely lacking in factual backing.  She is going to find herself facing very tough questions in the coming weeks, and how she responds will determine the nation's true feelings about her as a VP choice.

You are all smiling ear to ear, celebrating but I think you all protest too much!

This woman will be a great addition and it will hurt Obama.

So we will see on Nov 4!  See you there!

Indeed We Will!
You can't smile ear to ear and protest at the same time! Get your mixed metaphor right, at least!

This woman is already a disaster! McCain looks even more like an old, desperate panderer! It's a Hail Sarah, when what McCain needs to do is demonstrate seasoned judgment!

We will really see on Oct. 8 when Biden mops the floor with her -- respectfully, of course! See you there!

Boo Hoo!
Keep telling yourself that this is bad.  It is bad...bad for Obama!

What are the Repubs saying about their nominee...
Ed Rollins, who served as political director for President Reagan, is a Republican strategist who was national chairman of Mike Huckabee's campaign. Says...

She is a great debater. And she was runner-up for the Miss Alaska title, won Miss Congeniality in that contest and plays the flute.

Tit for tat...
Bill Allen, indicted CEO of VECO and benefactor/beneficiary of the Corrupt Bastards Club, along with 8 other VECO executives donated to Palin's campaign for Lt. Governor.

Ted Stevens, now awaiting trial, and Don Young, awaiting one of several indictments, both donated to Palin, and Stevens hosted at least one fundraising event for her.

Frank Murkowski offered her several jobs as compensation for "losing out" to his daughter for his US Senate seat (she finally accepted the O&G Ethics Commissioner job from him); Murkowski's campaign was also liberally plastered with VECO funds.

She's not terribly far away from all the bad money; she just plays it better.

Did'ja hear what she said today?

"Man proposes and God disposes."
 U.S. Grant, July 1, 1885

I heard what she said...
But it's not what she did...

From the Anchorage Daily News, Oct. 22, 2006:

5. Would you continue state funding for the proposed Knik Arm and Gravina Island bridges?

Yes. I would like to see Alaska's infrastructure projects built sooner rather than later. The window is now--while our congressional delegation is in a strong position to assist.

(sorry, no linky - reference came from Nexis search...)

And once it became politically expedient to shelve the bridge to nowhere, she didn't send the money back to Washington, either - she kept all $250m in Alaska.

"We're below sharks and contract killers." -- Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-S.C.), speaking on Congress's 9% approval rating

[ Parent ]
Ok, fair point.
But just to understand you the person. You never change your mind when you make a decision, right?

Once you decide something, right or wrong, or for political expedience, you continue to maintain your original position?

Yes? / No?

So she changed her stance on the bridge. Is that a bad thing? Nope, it just makes good political fodder for those that wish to fan the flames. Fair enough though. Thanks.

And the fact that she kept the money in Alaska, seems pretty smart to me. It probably ended up in the Alaska savings account that she set up whike she was governor. I'm sure it was put to a better use in Alaska then it would have in Washington D.C.

"Man proposes and God disposes."

She changed her mind...
only when it was clear Young and Stevens were taking a beating over it.

Yes, I've changed my mind, though never for political expediency of the sort Palin engaged in with the BTNw.

And today in her speech she claimed she said she didn't want it, that they'd build it themselves if they needed it, implying she was never in favor of it.  Yet she kept the $250m for other pet/boutique DOT projects that Palin favored.

That's not the language of a reformer or a budget hawk.  That's doublespeak.

I believe the protective weapon photo
showed her handling a semi-auto assault rifle, maybe a Colt carbine.

[ Parent ]
No, I have more..
Where would you like to start?
Her issues with abusing her office for personal reasons. Still being investigated - nice headline for the VP.  Let's hope she is cleared.

Many are going to have issue with her running in the most pressure filled race in history, while leaving a four month old Down syndrome kid at home.

(Sidebar: This is not about her being able to do both jobs or do them well, but should anyone leave a disabled child in the development stage to fulfill a dream that is iffy at best.

Before you start, I didn't think Edwards should have left his wife to run for office either.)

McCain's issues with calling his wife a cunt in public or laughing at Hillary being called a bitch.

Or both of their support of a woman carrying a rapist's child or 13 year old giving birth to her father's child.

Let's see there are the issues... McCain's support of the Bush administration and an unpopular war.

There are the issues with McCain being completely out of touch with the economy, believing it is strong in the face of bankruptcy, job loss and war.

What else...
A 72 year old man, that has had four bouts with cancer, and he offers up a pompon girl as a possible POTUS.  Suddenly, McCain's age and health become central issues in this campaign.

Is he stupid?  And at the same time he removes experience off the table.

That my friends, is powerful strategy at work.

What I can't wait for
is hearing Republicans praise and cheer for Hillary Clinton at their convention! Palin already rolled out Ferraro's and Clinton's name today and the crowd of the devoted cheered for me!

This is good stuff and looking forward to more.

Everything in your post is political talking points that have grown tired in their continuous droning from all the talking heads.

I could point out the same warts that the Democrats carry with them too. But what good would it do. But thanks for your reply.

And way to go by by bringing up Sarah's personal life. Nice work there. Seems to me that she should be commended for wanting to take on her personal affairs and serve her country too. If the V.P. pick was a man, would you be saying the same thing?

Unless I'm mistaken
No one has pointed out the obvious yet.

"Does McCain Have A Woman Problem?"

Despite his campaign's outreach efforts, McCain's attempt to bridge the gender gap has fallen flat. He fares worse among women than any presidential candidate since Bob Dole in 1996. In the August 13 Pew Poll, Obama holds a 51-38 lead among women over McCain. In the August Time Magazine poll, Obama leads 49-39.

McCain's share of the women's vote is considerably below the 48% George W. Bush won in 2004 or the 43% he earned in 2000. Indeed, if McCain dips even a little, he is at risk of falling below Bob Dole's 38% share of women's vote in 1996, which is the lowest share of any major part candidate in the last 36 years. More than half the female electorate (53%) holds mostly positive views of Obama, while only 37% feel mostly favorable toward McCain.

Who would have thought McCain does worse among any group of voters than Bush?

Women don't trust McCain because of his extreme views on the issues and adding a woman to the ticket to compensate for that isn't good enough especially when her views are more extreme than his.

"Suddenly, it may be cool to be American again" - William J. Kole

And she could be very bad for him on this
If women view McCain as treating her badly. Yet I can easily see McCain saying a number of things that women view as demeaning - because McCain doesn't get it.

This could turn out to be one of the worse decisions ever if McCain says the wrong thing.

What a choice! Great pick by McCain
What an amazing pick by McCain!! Gov. Palin brings in a distinguished record of executive experience, running a successful and popular Government in Alaska. An ideal ticket is one where 1 person brings in the Washington experience/foreign policy/national security experience and the other brings in executive/administrative experience. This can be seen from all winning tickets in the past few decades. The republican ticket is the perfect ticket now. She has a record of clean governance, bipartisanship and reducing wasteful spending and is an ideal choice for McCain's VP.

For all those who wish to raise the 'experience' question - do you honestly believe that Gov. Palin is too inexperienced to be President (a post for which, btw, she is NOT running for) despite being the Governor of Alaska for nearly 2 years and a mayor for many years before that, while Sen Obama is experienced enough to be President (a post he is running for)? If you honestly believe Palin is inexperienced, there is now way you could support Obama. Palin brings in executive experience, McCain and Biden bring Washington, foreign policy experience - what exactly does Obama bring in? Neither of the 2.

Also, it is incorrect to see the choice of Gov Palin as a gimmick to pander to the women voters. While that is a bonus, the most important point is that she would be an excellent person for the role of VP in McCain's administration, with the executive experience, to help him run the country effectively. None of us know too much about her, but whatever little Ive heard so far is immensely impressive. I request all voters to give her a fair chance, do some research and find out about her, and you will see that her candidacy is no gimmick.

Welcome aboard!
Thank you for a good post, even if I disagree about 179 degrees.

I'll just pick one point.  What do Pailin, Ferraro, and Justice Thomas have in common with Palin?

Yup.  Tokens.  None with the required expertise, and in the case of Thomas, intellect to be competent in their jobs.

Even the governor of a large, complex state like Texas can really bollix things up with six years experience, let alone two in a state with a population of about my congressional district.  There's experience and there's experience.

Sorry, went on to two.

...is about the size of the budget of the University of Colorado? Are you saying that Elizabeth Hoffman has the experience to be president? (She would work well with McCain as she testified that "cunt" is a term of endearment and McCain has called his wife a cunt.)

Not Hoffman
But Hank Brown and Bruce Benson are also qualified

[ Parent ]
I am amazed that the Repubs really think this is good.
86% of Americans vote on something other than the issues.  This woman is not a woman that a feminist would find attractive on a national ticket.

A women with four kids and one that is disabled and four months old, is a mom - plain and simple.

She is not a VP.  Yes, she is a Governor, but how taxing is her job?  The state has about the same amount of people in a congressional district, does not have vast diversity and does not have vast differences in socio-cognomina diversity.

She visually is not a woman that can stand up to McCain or even work with him.  Did you see how uncomfortable he looked during the announcement?  What other women have we seen working with McCain?  Who are his top advisors?  None are women.

Do you think he believes that this woman is his intellectual or political equal? Can you see the two of them discussing policy on how to handle the Russian invasion of Georgia?

This is a man that calls his wife a cunt in public.

He would never put a woman like Bailey Hutchinson on the ticket because she is superior to him.  Palin is a classic choice for a man of his generation - a pretty face that knows when to shut up and will do what he tells her to do.

If McCain was serious about putting a woman in charge he would have chosen Bailey Hutchinson or even Carly Fiorina.  Women of power - not a mom with four kids.

Go ahead attack me on my mom comments - but they are a true concern of many Americans, many men will feel this way. It may not be fair, but it is also not fair that some white people won't vote for Barack because he is Black.

Life isn't fair and Palin is about to be destroyed - by women.

Do you think for a half of second that Hillary, Ferraro and other powerful women are going to let Palin be the first in history to possibly hold the office of President - I can guarantee that won't happen.

Is it just me, or is the whole McCain operation looking more and more like the Beauprez '06 campaign?
